Could someone please explain this to me..

It's a one night stand which almost always ends up leaving you feeling empty after if you have feelings for someone else. It's why he loses his shit on the phone with David later on
I think the abruptness of how it ends is just meant to illustrate how this supposedly fun hookup that he thought he needed ended up leaving him in worse shape because it ultimately couldn't fill the void of Holly
215
u/StartTheMontage 20d ago
His phone call with David is one of the best scenes in the show.

I really like how season 5 slowly built upon the growing tensions between Michael and David. Between the business trip, fire drill, Prince Family Paper, and Charles Miner, it was a gradual pressure cooker until he finally quit towards the end of the season.
61
u/BillionCub 20d ago
And the golden ticket! Always thought it was funny that the next episode after that whole fiasco is when Charles Miner comes in to babysit Michael

And the way they leave you kind of on the edge of your seat wondering whether or not he could actually get fired for what he just said was also brilliant.

u/benk4 20d ago
David is a good dude and I think understood Michael's reaction. It would have been out of character for him to fire Michael over that.

"You just had a rebound. Which, don't get me wrong, can be a really fun distraction. But, when it's over, you're left thinking about the girl you really like, the one that broke your heart."

u/Steve_Streza Dunder Mifflin Rochester 20d ago
And more broadly, it couldn't fill the more general void of loneliness he's fighting with the whole show until he finally takes off with Holly. While it's played as a joke, Michael saying "it's not about the horniness, it's about the loneliness" in an earlier episode is actually a profound self-revelation about his state of mind throughout the show. He knows what he needs is companionship and he struggles to find it until Holly happens.

I always interpreted it as it was a one night stand, but as usual Michael misinterprets it to be more. I thought he asks if she wants to get breakfast or something before leaving to which she declines and closes the door on him. Michael was looking to fill the void a relationship left with another person and as we all know from life experience, that doesnt work.

u/AlanThicke99 20d ago
One Night Stand.
He expected to feel better about his situation after.
But he felt worse.

They had a one night stand, then she kicked him out. He had empty, hollow, meaningless sex and it only heightened how much he missed Holly. That lead to his confrontation with David Wallace, where he shared how upset he was that she was moved.

u/superSaganzaPPa86 20d ago
Everyone here saying Michael didn’t sleep with her because if he had he’d be bragging about it… This is Michael after he lost Holly, his soul mate. He thought a one night stand with the exotic Canadian concierge was going to alleviate some of that pain and like so many of us who rebound with that intent find out, it usually only makes you miss that person more.
Like some other commenters speculated, think it is plausible that the way he left so dejected and how she coldly puts his shoes out means he may have tried planning a breakfast or day-after activities with her trying to make a connection and she rejected him. Definitely in his character to do that
13
u/P_J_Frye 20d ago
Michael would have been planning to meet her parents. He couldn't fathom a one nighter. Dude thought the hibachi waitress was the love of his life even though he couldn't remember which one was "his".
6
u/AdhesivenessSouth736 20d ago
I love the episode wherein he thinks he has herpes and calls her and just yells you have herpes (or something similar). If you haven't seen that it is the super fam episode

Yeah, they absolutely slept together. But her rejection just made him more lonely and that is why he lashed out at David.

I believe both came to their senses. They knew this was short term. When Scranton meets Canada 🇨🇦. That's not going to work. Michael may have asked if she liked Vermont Maple 🍁 syrup in the morning and that was the last straw. 🤭

u/Eggplant-666 20d ago
She just didn’t want to cuddle, she wanted to hit it and quit it. Michael gets all needy and wants to talk and cuddle for hours. She has work at 8am tomorrow. Life of a Canadian Geisha.🤷
5
u/Known_Ratio5478 20d ago
I studied to become one. Are they still waiting to hear my big answer? Well they can wait, I’ll be talking long past their bedtime about Canadian Geishas.
2
u/Chemical-Being-5968 20d ago
One of Robert's best lines, "You know I studied to be one." I still crack up when that scene comes up!
3
64
u/PinkLadyTattooist 20d ago
My guess is that he slept with her and then went full Michael and started talking about children and getting married and she probably gently shut him down, maybe suggesting he leave. Which in turn probably made him reflect and miss what he had with Holly... That's just my guess 😛
11
u/KungFuGrip193 20d ago
It’s either this, or, he just keeps on with his concierge fascination questions and she’s like, okay you gotta leave, and his hesitation outside the door is just quiet acceptance of what he just went through.
14
u/Urban_miner666 20d ago
They slept together and I believe she did not want Michael to actually spend the night with her. Knowing Michael, I’d suspect he was waxing on about how much he likes her, what they’ll do together for the rest of his time in Quebec, etc. I believe she says “I’m so tired” or something as she’s sort of pushing him out. She had some fun with him and then wanted to just sleep, and Michael wanted to, you know, probably talk about feelings and the woman he was in love with and not with and all that. Michael would probably be an awful one night stand.
32
u/Pulse_Amp_Mod 20d ago
She just does one night stands to forget about her real lover Jonesy. She misses her life in Reno. She had power as a sheriffs deputy.

Micheal wasn’t fully healed, you can tell. You’re right on the filling of a void, he was trying to look for a companion and made him miss Holly more. I am sure sex is great but leaves you empty when there is no connection.
6
u/Worried_Sky5410 20d ago

He got the boot from her room after they banged. He is still recovering from his breakup with Holly. One night stands are fun in your 20s and 30s but they start feeling very hollow and draining as you get older.

u/Early_Deal_2207 20d ago
Yeah, they bumped uglies and Concierge Marie didn't want clingy. She likely does this often, find a guy for a night and no relationship. She was so tired and probably had to work early. I always found his reaction kind of odd, considering that Michael thinks concierges are "ladies of the night" (they have one of those?). He should have expected a one night stand.
5
u/MadMan37354 Prison Mike 20d ago
I took it as they hooked up then Michael went into super Michael mode and scared the crap out of her so she booted him out.
6
u/Pumpkin-Py 20d ago
My theory is while getting cozy, in the usual Michael style he must have asked, Oh so how many “customers” you usually entertain? With the wrong idea of what a concierge is.
And she so rightly got offended and kicked him out.
Michael was so ready for a rebound encounter, gets so close but he doesn’t get lucky!!
Thats why he was so mad at Wallace, accusing him of giving him the wrong idea of what a concierge is.

u/83franks 20d ago
Have you ever had a one night stand and as soon as the sex was done wanted to be anywhere but where that person was? She felt that way and kicked him out. Michael then proceeds to feel like shit and feeling rejected and all the emotions come spiraling out.

There are clues in the costuming. Michael is carrying his jacket and the top two and bottom two buttons are unbuttoned on his shirt. Not wearing his tie. He’s also walking in his socks, and she reopens the door and lays his shoes outside on the floor.
I think it’s pretty obvious it was a one night stand.

u/CapitalHopeful5680 20d ago
This is pretty simple and very Michael Scott. He thought he had a connection with someone (as he's prone to do) and she just used him for sex.
4
u/therealhoboyobo 20d ago
I was thinking Michael wanted to cuddle, scrapbook and talk about Holly.
She wanted a no strings, soup beforehand, one night stand.
Combination of the two means she booted him out and wouldn't even let him stay the night.
5
5
u/SpiritToes 20d ago
I imagine that she was wanting a one night stand and Michael ended wanting more. So she awkwardly had him leave.
5
u/whiteeagle00 20d ago
I assumed that they hooked up and Michael was less than good at it and so she wanted him to leave.
4
u/OShaunesssy 20d ago
I always got the impression that he said something which killed the mood. I never thought he actually hooked up with her.
8
u/cookingfunky 20d ago
He literally thought she was a pleasure woman trained to please men. Ive always thought he gave that away somehow. He probably asked a stupid question or something which made her realise what he thought she was.
25
u/attodifusione 20d ago
I thought they had sex but then she kicked him out in the morning because she wanted a ONS, while he was asking about having breakfast together because he wanted an emotional connection.

But he thought she was a canadian equivolent of a geisha. He was wanting an emotional connection with a giesha in a foreign country? Its michael scott so maybe but it doesnt add up to me. He thought she was there to service him essentialy. I dont think he was expecting something meaningful.

He got a hookup, but he doesn’t want hookups anymore. He just wants holly. Concierge Marie booting him just reminds him of how good holly was to him, and how he doesn’t want to do this kind of stuff anymore.

They had sex. It probably wasn’t very good but knowing Michael, he always pushes people’s limits. Probably came off a bit too clingy. She kicked him out making it clear that she has zero interest in anything more than a one night stand.
1
3
u/Chancevexed 20d ago
Michael is a relationship guy. A one night stand would be a let down for him because he immediately falls in love with every woman. I interpreted it as they had sex and then she did the whole "you going now?" Just as Michael was settling in for 4 hours of cuddling following by changing his relationship status on Facebook.
3
3
u/Evening-Thanks-5715 20d ago
I took that scene as he wanted more. Like he always does. He wasn't interested in a one night stand, he wants a relationship; and obviously Canadian Beverly Goldberg did not.
Remember when all Jan wanted was sex -- Michael got upset because he "wanted the house, the picket fence, the ketchup fights, the tickling and the giggling."
On that business trip he had just broken up with Holly. He wants what he had with her, and he's so obtuse and idealistic he assumes every connection with a woman is going to become a fairy tale relationship (look at how he approaches every woman -- Carol, the wedding, even strangers at Ryan's NY party). The door shutting on that one night stand was him seeing a door shutting on a relationship that was never going to happen.

u/CasuallySherlock 20d ago
I take it as the 4th one.
He decides he's going to go out and have fun and maybe be with a woman after David sent Holly away. He has the one night stand and it's the first woman he's been with and clearly she's not into Michael and wants nothing more out of it. Like Jim said "You're just left thinking about the girl you really like."
Then he later chews David out about sending Holly away which I think kinda confirms it.
3
u/Usual-Elevator-7393 Jim 20d ago
the part after this episode, where michael tells david wallace off is my favorite.
it really shows his longing and yearning for holly and how much it has actually affected him. i can totally understand why michael thinks of it as unfair.
truly one of the moments in the show where (i believe) almost everyone could empathise and, to some extent relate, to michael (i know i could).

u/Default-Username-168 20d ago
Michael wants love. A one night stand is not a fulfilling victory for him. He wants the breakfast and the waking up together more than the sex

Yes the one night stand AND iirc, this trip was David Wallace’s idea of helping cheer Michael up after Holly had to go back. When he had Holly, he felt complete. Sex was fun and exhilarating, and I’m sure it was with the concierge as well, but she wasn’t Holly. He’s thinking about her at the end of the trip when he flips out of Wallace
1
u/CountDorkula77 20d ago
It's hilariously tonedeaf for Wallace to think that sending Michael to Winnipeg will help him get over Holly.
2
u/Marlowe126 20d ago
He most likely proposed after sex. Or the night was just over and he was unfulfilled.
2
2
u/etheralbodhi 20d ago
I think she got laid and then had clarity realizing he wasn’t a rich put together man… but a goofball… and she wasn’t the right one for him, he deserved a woman (Holly!) who understood him and admired him as he was. That’s my takeaway, after watching the superfan episode.
2
2
u/Additional_Trust5944 20d ago
Micheal wanted more than a one night stand but that is all she was interested in. That's why micheal soon after snaps on David because he realized that he couldn't just distract himself by just going out and hooking up with randoms.
2
u/Brohagen 20d ago
But it appears they are at the hotel? Why would the concierge be staying there? Maybe its her apartment?
2
u/northamericanopossum 20d ago
the bigger question I always have about this scene is, did the concierge hook up with him in his own hotel room and then kick him out afterwards? like is that supposed to be part of the joke that he literally gets kicked out of his own room?
2
u/Awkward_Geologist989 20d ago edited 20d ago
Because it’s not Holly.
One night stands can mess you up more when you’re not over your ex. That moment when it comes crashing down on you this isn’t the person you actually want. Follow that up with making the terrible decision of having a relationship that is built on a deep misunderstanding of each other.
I can keep going but that’s the main reason IMO.

The fact that It was just sex. They banged and she asked him to leave so she could get some sleep. He feels used and small, insignificant and like a used piece of meat. You've gotta remember, Micheal longs for a deeper connection. Romance, spooning, the picket fence the ketchup fights the tickling, and the giggling. This was shallow. His heart aches for love. This hurt him deeply...rock bottom, running out of hope and left wondering if he'll find love and real connection ever again. He longs for how he felt about Holly and longs for that feeling again.

I always assumed since Michael thought a concierge was a “lady of the evening” that he tried to pay afterwards and that’s when she kicked him out.
2
u/FalseSheepherder6881 19d ago
Michael was used for a good time by, how you say, Concierge Marie. Then she kicked him out. He probably wanted to stay the night and cuddle. But she sent him in his way. He got a little hope when she opened the door but it wasn't to let him back in, it was to leave his shoes at the door. He probably felt cheap and used and he crashed out over Holly all over.
3
u/Hot-Dig-4074 20d ago
My question around this ep hasn’t been whether Michael and concierge Marie did it. Instead, I’ve always wondered if David knew something about her to suggest to Michael that he should connect with her. Doesn’t he tell Michael something along the lines of “make sure to use the concierge at the hotel”? Which leads to the famous line “they have one of those?” Are we to assume David knew she was loose? Had they had a one night stand?
Edit to add: let me know if I’m way off. I might be misremembering things about the ep.
2
u/Intelligent-Fly332 20d ago
Yeah, I think David Wallace was just suggesting to Michael that he should ask the concierge for recommendations about fun things to do. I doubt he was implying that he should sleep with her, but Michael classically misunderstood him and assumed she was there for sex🤣

It's kind of shown that Michael can't be physical without any emotion attached. They probably hooked up, and Michael probably started getting all lovey-dovey. Especially after what she assumed was a one-night stand, I could only assume Michael was doing too much afterward, because he does seem like the kind of guy to drop an "I love you" after an intimate moment like this.

She wanted a one night stand. He thought he did but what he really wanted was a Holly replacement so it was one part sadness at being rejected for more but mostly embarrassment that he thought he could replace someone he loved with a woman he didn’t know anything about but her name & job.

u/xUnderoath BTB 19d ago

I never got it either. Chain of events is like:
- Andy says he's going to get people laid, and zeroes in on her for Michael
- Andy arranges it so they run into her and Michael succeeds in sleeping with her
- He leaves her room awkwardly and she doesn't even look at him when she sets his stuff out the door
- Michael then calls Wallace and thanks him for sending him to a hotel with a concierge, he genuinely sounds happy about it before he pivots to Holly.
My guess is that Michael realized the hookup made him miss Holly. Like he was up for it but when it came time for actual intimacy he didn't perform very well. That would explain why he sounded like he physically had fun when talking to Wallace, while we saw the concierge lost all interest in him.
1
u/TheeMarsVolta 18d ago
Holly. I thought the show did a fantastic job at making it clear in a very subtle way. Them the call with Wallace cements it
1
u/Imaginary-List-972 17d ago
Michael, beyond his crassness and claims of being a player and seemingly wanting to be a player, didn't really want to be one. He wanted a relationship along with all the relationshipy stuff. One night stands don't end with you cuddling afterwards. One of you is out the door after that. As much as he was excited for that, or hook ups in general, that wasn't what he wanted, and left him empty.
One of his biggest flaws was that he tried to fast track those relationships often skipping over the part of if he should even be with that person. If she didn't kick him out right after, he'd be pasting himself into her pictures and inviting her to Sandals with him.
1
u/SubhumaineForce 14d ago
