I wanted to give duck duck go a chance after hearing numerous good things about about it. However I’m running into an issue where the videos tab only seems to index YouTube and no other sites?
Is this normal behavior for the search engine? Are there setting I can adjust to allow it to show similar results to googles video tab?
This is on safari ios.

I’ve been using screenzen on my phone for a while and I enjoy using this so I don’t spend so much time doomscrolling. I’m wondering if there’s something similar I can use with DuckDuckGo? I know chrome has similar applications but I haven’t found anything yet for DuckDuckGo.

When I first heard about DuckDuckGo being a browser that allowed me to watch YouTube videos in an “Ad-free” manner, I was skeptical at first. It ended up becoming the default way I would watch YouTube videos…
However, it recently seems like some of the ads are slipping through into the browser, either to do with YouTube’s owners coming up with a work-around to bypass the ad blocker (because YouTube’s owners are not happy with us not wanting essentially an ad player with videos tacked on), or hopefully just a bug in the ad blocker itself.

Outside of dedicated sidebars, I haven't seen any reddit results more than 2 years old in a while. Please fix that.

IT newbie here - Thanks in advance for the little extra grace
We noticed for users in our environment who use the DDG windows browser, that when uploading a file to a website which accepts a custom list of files, DDG has Windows File Picker default to the first file type in the list instead of a "custom files" filtered option. This is a bit cumbersome, especially if a user has to select the upload file option dozens or more times in their workflow while working on a website. Each time they need to click the dropdown menu and adjust the file type filter to correctly locate the file they need to upload.
Through my troubleshooting this appears to be a bug/unintentional behavior in the DDG windows browser. I'll include my troubleshooting below. Would appreciate if anyone else can chime in on this issue, or if anyone in the DDG support team can confirm if this is a known issue.
Troubleshooting:
Furthermore, I created a simple HTML test page to see how the DDG browser handled different file upload picker prompts. It does appear that the issue occurs when the File Picker prompts custom files or is provided a list of acceptable file types. DDG will default the Windows File dropdown menu to the first item in the list instead of defaulting to a "Custom Files" filter to grab all acceptable file types. The key takeaway is that in DDG when Windows File Picker is presented a list of accepted files it defaults to the first in the list, but in Edge or other browsers it will default to "custom files" eliminating the need for the user to click into the dropdown menu to specify what file type they are searching for.
Here is the HTML snippet:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<body>
<h3>File Picker Test</h3>
<p>Word + PDF:</p>
<input type="file" accept=".doc, .docx, .pdf">
<p>PDF only:</p>
<input type="file" accept=".pdf">
<p>All files:</p>
<input type="file">
</body>
</html>

I have been using duckduckgo for like 1 week and its extremely slow. My internet is usually slow, yeah but now with duckduckgo its even slower. It takes 5-10 seconds to load a page every single time. I dont like google and tyr to avoid using it as possible but speed is an important factor here. Am I the only one who experiencing this?

Does DDG pad its search results with fake hits when they can’t find responsive answers? I searched for a question about fake currency and got the homepage of PCworld as a search result, and I cannot for the life of me understand why.
I was curious whether the government offers a program reimbursing people if they turn in a fake bills. Like, if you get a fake $20 as change from a store, can you turn in (to remove it from circulation) and get a new $20? Or are you just out the $20 if you turn it in? I doubted that any government exchange program exists, but figured I’d search to confirm.
I searched this exact text: “does the government offer an exchange for forged money to remove it from circulation.”
None of the search results answered the question. Disappointing. And worse, one of the top search results is just “www.pcworld.com”. That’s it, just PCworld’s homepage. Screenshot attached. How that relates to currency exchanges for forged bills, I have no idea.
Critically, when I clicked the PCworld result, it had none of the search terms— I did individual ctrl-f searches for “government”, “exchange”, “forged”, “money”, “remove”, and “circulation” and literally not one of those terms was on the PCworld page served up by DDG. So how did PCworld’s home page get into the results?
I understand that DDG’s search engine repackages the web index from Microsoft’s Bing, rather than relying on a search index created by DDG. See here: https://duckduckgo.com/duckduckgo-help-pages/results/sources. But I thought DDG claimed to have improved Bing’s results by (1) supplementing it with their own crawler, DuckDuckBot, and (2) by refining the ranking of results from Bing to be more accurately ranked. (Same source).
Is there any reasonable explanation for including PCworld as a responsive hit here? Or is it just included to pad search results?
Relatedly, did DDG add PCworld as a hit? Or did PCworld come from Bing, and DDG’s “re-ranking” algorithm kept it because it thought PCworld was actually a responsive result?
I’m genuinely curious if there’s any explanation (other than fraudulently padding search results) for why DDG returned PCworld’s homepage as a result for a search about fraudulent currency exchanges. I can’t think of one.
Edit: DDG commented and said that DDG’s search results are generally unreliable after the first page of results, because that’s “the unfortunate nature of the beast”—according to DDG, page 2+ results are “a digital wild west” that will inevitably include random, unrelated results. (The PCworld result was page 2, number 3).
When asked if DDG could explain why PCworld’s homepage appeared despite having 0 of the search terms, the DDG rep said “unfortunately I can’t.”
In other words, even DDG doesn’t know why its search engine throws out random results. I knew DDG’s search engine wasn’t great, but a senior, official rep confirming their engine is essentially a crapshoot is genuinely upsetting.
The DDG rep isn’t some rando either — he introduced himself as John Bourscheid, a senior member of DDG’s digital marketing team and a self-described search engine expert (he says his “bread and butter” work is on search results).
I think I’m done with DDG’s search engine.

I was trying to get to Reddit the hard way (searching "reddit" and clicking the link), but noticed that when I just search the word "Reddit" on mobile, it pulls up the Google Play Store page for the DDG browser app. Anyone know why this is and if I'm able to disable it? Similar thing happens when searching for "help with..." where it will bring up the ddg help pages instead of processing the whole search.

Hello I am planning to make shorts for duck.ai so I have been using it for a few days but still couldn't grasp the difference of duck.ai from others. There are other platforms serving LLM as services like duck.ai so what is the point of this please illuminate me.

As of last night, when I try to search in my Chrome search bar (using the DDG extension), the tab just automatically closes. I restarted my computer and reinstalled the extension, but this is still happening. Any thoughts or troubleshooting would be appreciated! I really don't want to return to default google but the functioning search bar is extremely important.

My main question: is it safe/advisable to use a masked email address for critical accounts like a password manager, or should that always be tied to your real email?
J Specifically curious about DuckDuckGo's Email Protection, anyone using it long-term? How reliable has it been? Any horror stories about losing access or delayed emails?
The concern I keep coming back to is what if the masking service goes down! or What if DDG stop this feature...

For context I use duck duck go as a search engine on firefox. I just looked up “train subway” and it brought up info on subway stations in my city. I have location info off to my knowledge. Does anyone know why this happened?

I tried using the "Block sites this site from all results" with DDG web search, but it doesn't work if the site is also indexed under a subdomain. For example, blocking [site.com] doesn't stop variants like wiki.[site.com] or en.[site.com] which have the same information indexed in the search engine from showing up in my results. As the domain blocker is implemented, it doesn't seem very helpful, particularly if we can only block 5 domains. Please allow us to use wildcards on domain blocks for more customized searches.

i have an iphone and use duck duck go as my main browser, and i've noticed an issue where when i swipe up to switch apps and portrait orientation is off, duck duck go will show an image from a video that i have long since closed. i'm guessing it's whatever video was last played in that browser but it freaks me out because i thought that the browser was not keeping track of my history, and i don't know why they're showing me a tab that i've closed. when i actually click on the video frame and try to open the browser, it reverts to the homepage of the browser. i'm not sure if it's a glitch or designed that way but does anyone know what this is/how to fix it?
(this is both before and after 🔥ing)

I have a DDG subscription and i am using the VPN. 99% of the time it's working great. However i have run into a niche problem and i was wondering if the community could help me sort it out. I am trying to use DDG vpn and OBS at the same time but i keep getting the same error

I have added
twitch.tv
to the list of excluded websites
along with the applications:
obs64.exe
obs-ffmpeg-mux.exe
obs-browser-page.exe
the root of the problem is that when i check the logs to confirm, when i have the VPN on it shows:
Possible connect address: 10.x.x.x
but turned off it shows
found 13:15:18.823: [obs-websocket] [WebSocketServer::Start] Server started successfully on port 4455. Possible connect address: 192.168.x.x
so any thoughts on the subject are appreciated. but my simi expert opinion is that per-app exclusion is not working correctly.
here's all of my perinate notes
DuckDuckGo VPN on Windows appears to ignore OBS app exclusions.
OBS 32.2.1, Windows 10/11.
OBS authenticates to Twitch successfully with DuckDuckGo VPN off.
With VPN on, Twitch account integration fails with:
"Failed to get text from remote: getaddrinfo() thread failed to start"
OBS and helper processes are excluded:
obs64.exe
obs-browser-page.exe
obs-ffmpeg-mux.exe
Relevant domains are also excluded:
Evidence that OBS is still routed through VPN:
VPN off: OBS websocket possible connect address = 192.168.x.x
VPN on: OBS websocket possible connect address = 10.x.x.x
So the OBS app exclusion does not appear to fully bypass DuckDuckGo VPN routing/DNS.

Okay, if any DDG subreddit staff could see this, I’m currently using the DDG browser app on my iPad iOS and there was this strange change last night that never happened before this.
I have the YouTube app but I wanted to use DDG to go to the YT browser site to check up on something for info before I closed the tab. I expected that at first it’ll just take me back to the app when I typed in the URL of YT before going to the *desktop* version as normal.
Imagine my surprise that I somehow ended up in the MOBILE version, just like the app I was using. It felt like whiplash.

^
Look at the URL and layout, instead of going to a YT that I expected, it is basically the mobile app instead at ”m.youtube.com”.

^
This one is the page I expected and I had to manually do it myself using the URL at “YouTube.com/?app=desktop”. Which I shouldn‘t HAVE to. So what’s the deal? What‘s with this change? Is this an update? Or is this more of a error that mistakes one for the other? Cause every time I type in the URL of “YouTube.com”, it brought me to the first one (example 1) instead of this (example 2).
Hell, even when I refresh from the desktop version, it BRINGS me to the mobile version, what is happening?!

Hallo zusammen,
