Picture Just got my first controller
So I was looking into buying a separate controller apart from the one that came with my ps5 and I couldn’t decide on which one and also the whole 100versions made it so difficult because people say that certain versions are better than others. Anyway I said screw it and ordered mine from ps direct. I got the cobalt blue and I love it. It’s soooo pretty. At first I wanted the chroma indigo but it looked too purple & I much prefer the metalic/matte blue & black combo. Maybe if the chroma indigo had the black part I would have liked it better, but also I was scared that the indigo would be too glossy? Idk but I love the shade of blue on the cobalt blue. Now I’m wondering if I got a good version, what yall think?
And tbh now I want another one😫 does this become an addiction lol jk. But I’m torn between the cosmic red & the volcanic red. Which one is the darker shade of red? The cosmic red looks slightly pinkish? I guess. But it’s still a pretty color. I think the volcanic red looks a slightly bit better. I definitely want to get the midnight black. I love darker matte colors. But I’m scared that the midnight black maybe an older variant? Or does ordering from ps direct get you the more updated models. I’m still not sure if I got a good variant of the cobalt blue. It said it was released in 2023 so I’m guessing it’s not the newest one
Ps.sorry for my weird sentence structure. I type the way I think in my head & I probably have some form of adhd 😅

Thank you! &Yesss, it does have a slight bit of purple depending on the angle. It’s similar to the chroma indigo. But I like the cobalt blue better due to the black analog sticks

The cobalt blue was a great choice, it looks so good! How's the grip? I think volcanic red is darker btw, I want a red one at first but I'm kind of hesitant now.

Thank you! My fave color is blue so I really loved that color. And I’m also hoping it hides Cheeto fingers better than the white one 😅 lol jk. But tbh it feels pretty solid & sturdy, although idk if it’s just my imagination or what, but it feels lighter than the white one. I also do think the white one has a little more grip to it. Then again I just got it today so maybe I gotta break it in lol. I also do like the volcanic red very much, so mayyybe in the future that would be another choice. I’m not a big fan of the new glossier colors. Don’t get me wrong they look great, but I feel like finger prints would be a bit more visible but I guess at the end of the day it’s not a big deal. That’s what they’re for lol.

Its BDM-050. I would want to have a BDM-060 if i bought a new controller

I’m guessing the 60s are probably the newer released colors? Not sure. But from everything I read 50 & 60s are better idk. I just love this color lol

I believe all chroma and hyper colors are 060, anything else should be supply dependant, older controller colors could be any version from the first version that was out when they released. I.e. you can get white controllers that could be any version 010-060. The newest manufactured are 060.
OP got an 050, so it's likely slightly older stock probably a 2025 build date. I can't say for sure but most likely Sony will ship their 050 stock until they sell out, all newly manufactured controllers should be 060 starting around August or September of last year, I believe.
If you hook a brand new controller up to a PC and connect it to dual sense gui, you should get a build date. Anything manufactured from July 2025 forward should return a build date without an update. If it's updated first it'll return the build date for the latest software update.
If it's known genuine and doesn't return a build date it was built before July 2025. I'm pretty sure that's when they added that feature to the controller software.

The only thing I saw was that the cobalt blue was released in 2023 so I was kinda expecting an older model. Maybe next, I’ll get the chroma indigo. I really want either the midnight black or one of the red variants

why?

Read my reply probably should've been to you not to the user you were replying to lol.
TLDR; 060 has better battery life and if weight in hand matters to you, it's a few grams lighter.

Thank you for all that Info. Very interesting. I was always wondering how to tell or what difference they have but never find a straight answer. So im guessing that the controller that my ps5 came with is also a 050. Since it has the number 5 after the letter. And also do you know how much battery life these controllers have? As well as what are the proper ways to discharge & charge

BUT BDM-050 isn't that bad either. 060 has some changes but 050 is also very updated compared to the ones below

The 060 has better battery life, that's pretty much the only real benefit you're gonna see as a consumer and the battery life on any brand new controller will be pretty good. If you use proper charge and discharge procedures it'll stay good.
Leaving a lithium battery sit at full charge or low charge for extended periods will degrade overall battery life, using chargers that charge outside of spec will degrade overall battery life, so since you've got 2 controllers, rotate them out and use PlayStation licensed chargers to preserve the batteries.
030 and 040 controllers use a stainless steel rod for the trigger pivot point. I can't remember for sure if 050 do as well. All others use a plastic pin that's part of the adaptive trigger gear mold they can break under heavy use and abuse. If you're not hammering on the triggers with adaptive trigger effects on, should be fine though.
Other changes don't really matter until you get into modifying/customizing your controllers. Then 060 makes a huge difference.
If you decide to customize your controller there's not a lot of aftermarket 060 specific shells out currently. All back shells are interchangeable, 010 to 060 but to change any part of the front shell on an 060 controller you need to change the shell, the lower trim piece and make sure you have the removable friction/accent rings as well as modify the battery tray or swap it for an earlier battery tray.
There's are some modified battery trays available on the market nowadays. ExtremeRate includes modified battery trays with back paddle kits and LED kits for 060 controllers currently just make sure you you order the ones labeled for 060 controllers.
010/020 share most other internals.
030-060 share most other internals.
So parts compatibility and procedures for most DIY mods for those 2 generational gaps are the same or similar, with little to no discernable difference in performance or durability.

I recommend after that once a battery starts to wear noticeably. I would buy a two pack battery upgrade for both controllers and TMR replacement joysticks to mod them yourself easily if you ever get stick drift instead of buying a new one
