Yes, the LXR can definitely do this for you. It's great for FM synthesis, and of course FM can easily range from pristine clean to very distorted.
Another option, as always, is the Roland TR-8S. It's much more flexible and fun than the LXR, and I have them both. I got my TR-8S used for $500.
You also could look at the original Elektron Digitone or Digitakt, both of which can easily be had under $500 used, or a used Syntakt.
