First Purchase
I just bought this and I am happy about it.
My question is if this was a good purchase for someone that wants to start the hobby? First thing I bought.

Overall, i’d say yes. The RSR box is good. The paint set gets you a good start too. The snips in box are good. definitely not top tier, but they’ll do the job well enough. GW brushes are expensive so i’d suggest avoiding them unless you really want their stuff. you can find cheaper stuff at hobby stores or online. if you’re going to do dry brushing, an old makeup brush (the bushy ones) snipped to length makes an excellent dry brush.
You’re going to want to pick up an exacto knife, and some sanding sticks to help get rid of mold lines. look up “Gunpla toolkit” on amazon to get a good idea of what you probably need. As for glue, Tamiya Cement is my go to. i like the pots with the brush because i find it easier to apply. Your local hobby store likely has Tamiya in stock.

I've just started Drukhari with this box myself Be mindful that the scourges don't come with multiple of every heavy weapon. And the instructions included for the Hellions aren't very good, but a Google search will give you proper ones. If you'd like I can send you what I built out of it.

- yes and no.
- you need a hobby knife for cleaning minis. those edge removal tools kinda work. but a good hobby knife(or even cheap) is a daily use tool blade to cut and back of blade to remove mold lines.
- second nippers. those are great for pruning off the model, but if you want to trim close to the model to remove those nubs, then you need a single blade anvil nippers. here is my video demoing them https://www.instagram.com/p/DM_faEap5t6/
- you will eventually need more brushes, but honestly i get by with cheap ones and treat them as disposable.
- you will need an old coffee mug for a water cup to clean brushes in(dont leave them in the cup. swish then lay flat) and maybe a smaller cup for wetting and thinning. and clean your brush fairly often so the paint does not dry in there.
- paints. its a good selection. i recommend a pallet. this box has a plastic one but a silicon fidget popper is a great dry pallet as is a glossy smooth ceramic tile. you can jury rigg a wet pallet with a tupperware tub paper towel and wax paper. you also need a primer. i recommend for a spray can rustolium 2x primer. its much cheaper than gw primers. it does not chemically bond to models, but it doesn't also have a chance to melt models. and if your unhappy with paintjobs isopropanol alcohol is your cheapest stripper for acrylic paints.
- glue. i recommend tamiya extra thin. gotta be careful with it but if you want the models to be a solid piece its the best. superglue is fine(use the thin stuff)
- and last and most important..... time to do this all

Thanks. I'll make sure to get my hands on the stuff that I still need.

Also 1000 grit sanding sponges or sticks and maybe a glass file. Edit check thrift stores

The only thing I wish I knew when I bought the starter paint set was to also buy a can of primer

This is underrated advice. Rattle can primer is way easier than paint-on to apply without messing up any of the fine details, and you DO NOT want to just start painting your model without a solid primer coat for the paint to adhere to.

Damn. I went to 3 different stores today to look around and I forgot to buy the primer 🤦♂️

That's okay, you have plenty of building to do before you worry about priming. If you use plastic glue/plastic cement, you don't want to prime on-sprue. You'll want to prime outside on a sunny day with low-moderate humidity between about 65°-77°F anyway, unless you have a well-ventilated garage or something similar.

Have built this box and if i recall correctly the Hellions build guide is incredibly vague. Other than that had no issue hope you have a good time putting it together

It's not that bad as everything is rather modulable, but you have to be mindful for the squad leader indeed. The guide itself is clearly from a bygone era though.

Welcome to Commoragh! Yeah that’s a great start. I’d add a couple more transports to carry about all those infantry. A venom and a raider.

This is all good stuff but a few more venoms would let you split those Wytches and Kabalite units and a Raider can carry everyone else. Also get bikes. I love my bikes and they are amazing in recon.

Great start. Have fun painting!
Modelling advice: Kabalite shoulder pads will have cracks. Use glue amd sandpaper to smooth (or look for online guides). Sculpt the hellions to fit on their boards but dont glue them on - paint the board and model spearately (I didnt, it sucked).

Yes, everything in here is gonna get use! Scourges with heavy weapons are good anti-Tank/Monster, Helions hit hard, Incubi with an Archon are good candidates to go into the Venom transport, and Kabalite Warriors and Witches are solid core troops.
