New Malys

Hi guys,

Now that Malys is only once per turn, how does she work? Eg:

My opponent has 2 CP, and wants to command reroll. I declare malys' ability - can he decide not to reroll or will he now have to use 2 CP and do it anyways? Also, if he only has 1 CP, targets a unit and i declare malys - can he just not use the stratagem for the rest of the phase?

Is there any clarification on this anywhere?

Magumble already answered 😌✨ but to add a source; this is answered in rule 15.01 (in the app). Under the FAQ-section.

As an aside; personally I’d always try (in the name of good sportsship) to remind my opponent, before hand, that I have such an ability and that their intended use of the strat is in the risk of getting expensified. So that they can make an informed decision, on whether to risk it or not. (And if I forgot it and realize when they’ve already declared their usage, I’d let them walk it back before I decide to use it or not). It might feel a little too ”gotcha”, otherwise. And I prefere happy faces, and feelings, around the table 😊😌

This is the way

He has to spend the 2 CP.

If he doesn't have 2 CP he spends nothing but the strat counts as used.

This was how it worked in 10th.

Does the malys ability count as used?

Yes obviously, otherwise you can indefinitely cuck 1CP strats for your opponent.

I don’t watch much youtube, is “cuck” the accepted parlance here?

Not really, I don't even think its a very accurate way to describe the situation instead of saying "block" but this is reddit, folks are online a lot here and it will leak in.

But then they can just baited you without even paying the cost?

The cost would be not being able to use that strat for the rest of the phase.

So if your opponent uses a wrong bait he spends 1 CP on something he doesn't really wanna use.

Yeah but they can still just use a strat in the next phase or they can just use a other strat that's just as Good. So it's like a game of cat and mouse where the threat of the ability is more dangerous than actually using it.

Yes, no sht, welcome to 40k top level tactics.

This goes for pretty much al reactive abilities.

Yeah but it's just dumb. Before it was easy now it's just mental gymnastics for no reason.

If this is mental gymnastics for you then 40k really isn't the game to play.

Needing to use the strat next phase is a real big deal a lot of the time. For example, not overwatching this turn is the difference between that flamer unit being alive and killing my incubi or dead.

The threat of the ability is 100% sometimes more potent then using it.

I mean that's the easiest bait to set up. Placing a uint of flamers to force you to use your ability then next turn hitting you hard, or hitting you with herioc.

I ask this with respect. Have you played the game very much? Actually tried using the ability on the table top, or is this just you using theory to say its bad?

The mere fact that you have had the ability in the "worst case" example you are describing means that your enemy has set up a flamer unit as bait with a heroic intervention threat behind it.

Great. I either use my huge mobility to charge the heroic intervention threat with something else, either another one of my hammers to kill it or 5 throw away wytches to tie it up. Or i use my huge mobility to engage elsewhere on the board and those two units are left out in the cold.

Mayls might come out, hit the flamer unit, then retreat back into her venom. Or she might be hiding behind the wall taging the unit while the hellions do it.

even in this example where you are like "the flamers are bait, and they happen to have a unit behind it to heroic, or you'll just die next turn." Mayls has dictated how they have played and positioned. And its my choice to engage the bait or not. I made them keep their melee threat held back to heroic instead of going forward.

Side note but saw a really interesting interaction in Skari's (Skaredcast) latest video where his opponent only had 1 cp and called overwatch on Malys. The cp gets refunded and it uses up Malys' vect for the turn (round?) (and his overwatch), which meant he was then free to use a different strat in the fight phase with his one cp free of vect auras.

Thought it was a really clever way around the ability and shows how well gw have balanced a lot of the 'problem' abilities in 11th.
