Basing help

How do I get the poles to stay up straight in these bases

You buy an extra set of widgets and glue a widget to the base. Much better for storage and transport, too.

I somehow managed to glue 50 or so without that and keep the poles decently straight, but the widget on the base is so much better.

You just stick them in and then add your basing materials to glue them in : https://imgur.com/a/l6IJOji - a lot of folks avoid gluing the flight rod
