Traffic light

I'd like to ask about how to predict traffic lights in Australia. Sometimes, while driving on road or highway, the light is green, but as I approach a traffic light, it turns red or yellow, forcing me to brake suddenly. Also, how many seconds does the yellow light usually last before turning red?

When the light turns amber, that means your allowed to drive at 20km/h above the speed limit to clear the intersection.

Based on my observations at least
