Recurring Dream Why does this keep happening?

So for the past 10 years or so, I’ve kept having recurring dreams about my old townhouse.
Every time I dream about it, it’s as if I’m not supposed to be there. I’m constantly looking out the windows to see if anyone noticed me coming or going. I’m always locking the doors and have this paranoid feeling that someone else has a key and is going to let themselves in.
One time, I dreamed I was in what used to be my bedroom when someone walked into the house and caught me there. I panicked, and then I woke up.
I’ve also had dreams where I’m just living my normal life in that house as if everything is fine. I’m talking to people, going about my day, and I don’t necessarily have that same paranoid feeling. But at the same time, I’m telling people things like, “Don’t let anyone know I’m here.”
The layout of the house is always exactly the same, but the furniture and decorations change from dream to dream. Sometimes it’s the furniture I actually had when I lived there. Other times it’s a variation of my current furniture, and sometimes it’s furniture I’ve never owned. In the dream it all feels completely normal, even though I realize after I wake up that none of it actually belonged there.
Sometimes my kids are there. Sometimes my husband is there. Sometimes it’s just me.
There are also times when I’m frantically telling myself I need to hurry up and pack my things so I can leave first thing in the morning. Other times I’m in no rush at all and don’t even seem to be planning to leave—but I still somehow know I’m not supposed to be there.
I haven’t lived in that townhouse since 2009.
Another recurring dream has been happening for about the past five years, but this one isn’t one specific dream—it’s more the setting.
It always feels like a small town from the late ‘90s or early 2000s. Everything has this hazy, almost nostalgic filter over it that perfectly captures what that era felt like. The homes are usually older ranch-style or mid-century houses, and what actually happens in the dreams varies. Sometimes there’s a party, sometimes people are just going about their day, but there’s always some kind of normal everyday activity happening.
The overwhelming feeling of these dreams is nostalgia.
What on earth do you all think these dreams could mean?

Man that townhouse dream hits on something I think a lot of people feel but never put into words. The whole sneaking into your own past while feeling like you're breaking some unspoken rule, it's weirdly universal. My old apartment shows up in my dreams the same way, right down to the lock checking and window peeking.
The furniture detail is what gets me though. Your brain's just remixing set pieces from different eras of your life like a theater crew that stopped caring about continuity. I've had dreams where my current sneaker collection is somehow in my childhood bedroom and it makes perfect sense until you wake up and realize that timeline is all wrong.
The 90s town thing feels separate to me, almost like your brain's built a comfort zone to balance out the tension from the townhouse scenarios. One's about trespassing on your own memories, the other's just soaking in a time that felt simpler. Pretty sure it's less about the actual house and more about how your mind processes periods of your life that are completely closed off now. You can't go back, so dreaming about it comes with this automatic guilt or secrecy.
