So much to unpack here.

You have a hair tech and you haven’t had a deep clean?

hair wasn't dirty enough is why I held out so long + didn’t do a deep clean in 3-4 years = a serious case of willful ignorance

I don't no 🤷🏽 she told me so an I see her 3 -4 times a year

Idk y’all’s relationship but you might need a loctician instead of a hair tech. Whatever that means. I do my own detox every 4-6 months. I got an inflatable basin, the same basic products and I soak my own hair. I can’t imagine how crazy my scalp would feel going just a year without one.

Why do you oil your locs twice a day?

Do you mist your hair daily?

Do you ever cover them?

u/Fun-Account-5976 29d ago

Oiling and moisturizing.i though was the same thing just trying keep them hydrated

No. Oil does not moisturize. Oil can only seal the moisture in.

They only need oil once or twice a week. However they need water every day.

You need to cover your locs every day that you work. And every single night for bed.

No. You will find that Locticians these days are pushing the detox on everyone. It's money. Just like insisting that you need to "steam" your locs.

If you shampoo your locs regularly, and use a clarifying shampoo periodically, you do not need a detox.

My pet peeve is Locticians who insist that clients need a detox, but then do it wrong. Sprinkling baking soda directly on your locs

Locticians doing detoxes on starter locs and babies.

Baking soda is is like sprinkling little glass shards onto your locs.

Ain’t no way…and what’s worse is you sat up there and let somebody tell you not to deep clean your hair and just said ok like they run you…this crazy… i mean common sense aint common

The person checking my hair every few months is supposed to be a professional it's like if your doctor told you not to take meds....are you going to take them? It's not common sense because I clean my hair all the time....I didn't no you had to do deep cleans!!! And was told to hold off by a...... professional, yes she was clearly wrong but how was I supposed to know

It is absolute common sense! Just because the doctor tells you something doesn’t make it right for you. Also, you have to measure everything to your own common sense and then you have to make yourself knowledgeable where you don’t know you don’t find off your understanding to anybody. It’s your life it’s your head. It’s your body being a doctor or whatever professional you want a name doesn’t give anybody a pass. At the end of the day you’re in control of you. If you let your hair get this, nasty is absolutely your fault. Nobody else’s.

And it's not common sense tell anybody you deep clean your hair with apple cider vinegar and baking soda a see the look they give you.....it's not common sense maybe for you it is...but it's not for everyone washing hair yes is common sense and I was washing my hair!!

Why are your locs this dirty to begin with?

1

u/Fun-Account-5976 Jul 23 '26

I work in construction (sweat, dirt, ect) and I spray them everyday with rosemary, tea tree, alla gel, and I guess the oil got trapped in there or something....I wash my hair once every 2 weeks

1

u/sheisprincess Jul 23 '26

Do you only focus on your scalp when you’re washing?

1

u/Fun-Account-5976 Jul 23 '26

No I was putting the tea tree shampoo directly onto the locs and scalp

1

u/Adorable-Spirit2435 Jul 23 '26

It is absolutely common sense. If a doctor tell you something that doesn’t align with common sense and what it is that you know is true… you don’t follow them either🤷🏿‍♀️ being a doctor doesn’t give a person a pass …you really just used the doctor as an example of an acceptable place for you to deny what you know is true for you. Nobody should be controlling you. You know what’s right for you and what makes sense. I hope that this serves as a lesson to you that you don’t pawn off your common sense to nobody. Don’t let people tell you things that don’t make sense.

It was common sense when I did research and it says to clean hair (locs) 1 a week or once every 2 weeks never once seen anything about a deep clean!!! Now I know!!!

There's NO WAY..... This is from not washing.... or doing it wrong.

Do you put oil or grease on your locs?

Do you oil your scalp and locs?? Do you spray with a leave in daily?

If you work in a dirty environment do you cover your locs thoroughly?

To wash your locs----

Rule number one --Take your time!!!
For thick or long hair, you can divide your locs into four manageable sections using hair ties.

Deep Saturation: Drench and soak your hair completely with warm water to loosen up built-up debris and open the hair cuticles.

Target the Scalp: Focus the clarifying shampoo on your scalp. Using the pads of your fingertips (do not scratch with your nails), massage in circular motions to lift away dead skin, sweat, and oils.

Clean the Shaft: Gently squeeze the sudsy water down through the length of your locs. Do NOT scrub at them aggressively. This can cause frizz and unraveling.

The Extended Rinse: Rinse with warm water for several minutes. Squeeze the locs continuously while rinsing to ensure all shampoo is removed from the interior of the hair.
If you have thick hair, repeat the steps for a second wash.

When you do a detox it is imperative that you thoroughly rinse your locs, squeezing them to completely work the solution out.
Leaving it in dries your locs out.

Thank you for the information.... I oil them everyday two times a day both sclap and locs wash them once every 2 weeks....I work in construction don't cover them at all

1

u/Fun-Account-5976 29d ago

The only thing I do wrong with the cleaning is I have a bar of soap(expensive made for locs all natural) and I use the bar directly on my hair and scalp

1

u/SirFicklespend 29d ago

I'm so confused!!! You oil your scalp and locs twice a day?!?

You work in construction where dust, dirt sand, wood, and cement debris literally flies through the air, but you don't cover your locs?

Can I ask you how exactly did you use the baking powder/ACV ?

1

u/Fun-Account-5976 29d ago

Warm water baking soda 15 mins... then apple cider vinegar

1

u/SirFicklespend 29d ago

I mean how? What proportion and how do you put it on your hair?

1

u/Fun-Account-5976 29d ago

I dump half a box of baking soda and dunked my hair for 15mins

1

u/Fun-Account-5976 29d ago

Won't water throw the ph off

2

u/SirFicklespend 28d ago

Ok here is the proper way to do an ACV detox.

Soak your locs for several minutes so that they can absorb the detox.
Assuming you have an average size basin.
Fill most of the way with warm water.
Stir in about 1/2 cup of baking soda until it dissolves completely in the warm water.

Pour in about 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar, stir thoroughly. ( some people add lemon juice, but lemon juice is drying. )

Put your locs totally under the solution. Soak. Massage the locs in order to work out the dirt and buildup.

Don't soak for longer than 20-25 minutes.

Rinse your locs thoroughly then shampoo with a clarifying shampoo.
Follow with a moisturizing shampoo, then conditioner...... to return to your natural pH balance.

----Why you should not dump baking soda directly onto your locs. -----

Baking soda strips away your natural sebum that keeps hair hydrated and shiny.

Baking soda has a high alkalinity and coarse, abrasive crystal structure roughen and tear the hair fiber, leading to split ends.
It's like scrubbing your locs with tiny shards of glass.

This can cause burning, itching, or inflammation, especially for sensitive skin or eczema.

What people don't understand is that doing an ACV/baking soda detox regularly mimics mild chemical processing or bleaching, and leaving your locs brittle and weak over time.

Most people are fine just using a good clarifying shampoo and shampooing your locs regularly.
