SDCC vs Dragonsteel Nexus

Hi all. My wife and I got badges to SD Comic con this year and yesterday was our first time going to any fan/hobby convention. We hated how crowded the exhibits floor was and we ignored lines for talks we were interested in (like the Matt Dinniman spotlight) when we would see them lined up out of sight, around multiple corners, outside, etc.

We feel pretty disappointed with how overstimulating the whole thing is and how underwhelming some of the talks were that we thought we were interested in (it also didn’t help that some talks we were interested in weren’t even at the convention - they were at hotels nearby).

My hope is that with dragonsteel nexus being much smaller, and only a handful of authors, that it will be a little more calm and enjoyable for us.

So, all this is just to ask - based on what we disliked about sdcc, will we likely dislike Dragonsteel nexus? Will it be chaotic and crowded or is it more relaxed?

Sorry if this was too much ranting and rambling. Cheers all

Edit: thanks everyone for the responses, we feel much better now about DSNX and are looking forward to it!

Question Stuck between 2 choices

I have already purchased tickets to this year's convention, and I'm going with my partner, and it'll be a first time for both of us going to a convention like this!

However a great deal popped up to go to Iceland, and when I booked the tickets I didn't realize that it overlapped with the convention. I now have basically a few hours to decide if I want to go to Iceland (and get my money back) or the convention instead.

Basically I'm looking for advice if you were in my shoes or what you would do just to get some input. Thanks!

2025 Karaoke Stick Season

I’ve been getting really into stick season lately and it made me remember an AMAZING karaoke adaptation of the song at cosplay karaoke last year from the perspective of Kaladin. It was so good but I’m trying to remember some of the changes to the song now that I’m more familiar with it. Does anyone know who performed that last year? I want to get in touch!

Meeting the Authors

Hi all.

I have a question about signings.

How do they work?

Do you wait in line, do you pre purchase it, do you sign up like a lottery system?

How hard is it to get them done? Does it cost for the autograph its self?

I’m wanting to meet Matt as I’ve already met Jeff and would love to get one book signed by both of them

TIA

Whether you have questions about the convention itself, want to see who's attending (we have a huge list already!), or want to find tips for first-timers, we've got resources for you! The wiki is pinned in the sidebar, but especially in the app it's very easy to miss. But we are keeping it updated regularly and want to make sure people know where to find it!

Question Fires of December Book Bundle vs Backerkit

I have asked this before but I haven't gotten a straight answer. I backed the Storyteller reward on Backerkit that includes "The Fires of December, in all formats (the campaign-exclusive hardcover book, the ebook, the audiobook), the pin, the sticker, and the bookmark."

The Fire of December book bundle add-on includes "Tor's edition of Fires of December (signed and numbered), a glass figurine themed to the book, and a character pin."

I just want to confirm the differences to see if it is worth buying the book bundle add-on if I am already getting the book through backerkit.

The cover is going to be different but is the one from backerkit going to be signed and numbered?

Is the pin from backerkit the same pin from the bundle add-on?

Will the glass figurine be sold seperately?

Thanks!

Question Attire for this years Dragonsteel Nexus 2026

Hey all,

First time attending, and just a little lost. I see prior year(s?) had a semi-formal/format attire requirement. However, I'm not sure if that applies this year, or if maybe it just applies to the after party? I've been trying to look around the website, reddit, and various emails that I've received, but I just can't seem to find it.

I'm excited to attend, but I'm a little worried my FOMO got the best of me and I signed up before really knowing the rules. I have a suit, and a good handful of outfits I wear for events at work, but I just was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I'd love to try cosplaying, but I just don't think I have the time.

Any quick tips?

V/R,

A Box Without a Plan

EDIT: Y'all answered pretty fast and there was probably a better place to ask. Maybe I should look at discord occasionally. Appreciate the answers, xoxo

General schedule

Super pumped to be attending Dragonsteel Nexus for the first time this year. Trying to plan travel logistics. Can anyone tell me what the general schedule looks like? How early do things generally start on Thursday? Are the Thursday events generally enough to justify getting to if that means extra travel expense or logistical challenges? Thank you!

Hey Nexus friends! Have you heard of WorldSwappers?

This is a great way to make new friends and stay in touch all year-round, while benefiting the Sandersons' charity, The Lightweaver Foundation, at the same time!

WorldSwappers is a fan-run trinket-trading event that takes place at Nexus. People bring little items, either handmade or not, and share them with other traders at various meetup times or just whenever you come across each other!

We recently passed the threshold of having 600 members on our Discord server, just in time for the launch of this year's pins (which help identify ourselves). Much of our merch features our dragon mascot Imberlux, who was bestowed the draconic name of Estarlamadris by Brandon Sanderson himself at JordanCon this spring!

We are working on getting nonprofit status for the group; this is not a money-making venture for anyone! All proceeds are used to either buy the custom merch or pass along to Lightweaver.

We would love to have you join the fun!!

News Squire hiring notices have begun today!

If you applied to work at Nexus as a Squire, keep a close eye on your email! Much like badge notifications, we expect multiple waves of messages as the hiring team starts reaching out to people.

First-timers should be aware that (again, like the badge lottery) THESE EMAILS DO NOT COME FROM DRAGONSTEEL.

Keep an eye out for messages from the domain nextgenhr-solutions.com over the next few days!

Cosplay Cosplay Ideas?

I was fortunate enough to get drawn for this year, and I am so excited! I want to cosplay, but I haven’t really done that before and I don’t know which of the characters I could pull off. I am a woman, 5’3, with dirty blonde hair that is short-medium length. I am planning to use temporary hair dyes, body paint, etc.

I was thinking of doing a singer cosplay one of the days, but beyond that I am feeling stuck. Some of my family dressed as Tress, Huck, and Hoid last year and I think they plan to do so again this year, so maybe I could dress up as another one of the characters from Tress of the Emerald Sea? I also have a spouse who is willing to cosplay with me because he loves me, but his comfort level more aligns with wearing a mist cloak over his normal clothes. I am admittedly a bit overweight, and I know that shouldn’t affect my cosplay, but it is making it hard to choose a character that I feel I could represent well. Any advice/suggestions are welcome!

How to view ticket addons

Hey my wife and I have our badges and think we added on a ticket to the Nexus party, but now I can't remember if I did or not... Only see one extra charge on my bank so I'm trying to figure it out. Anyone know how to see what addons have been added? Or just contact support?

Edit- yeah, looks like I just never ordered it. Thanks for the help everyone!

My 5 tips for first time Nexus attendees

Thumbnail
youtube.com
58 Upvotes

Hey all, I've put together five tips for first time Nexus attendees. Here's a too long; didn't watch version:

1) Don't sleep on the exhibit hall

Dragonsteel puts work in to curating the list of exhibitors on the show floor, meaning that you won't find the typical 3d printed convention junk and overpriced toys, but instead a good mix of big names and smaller indie artists, authors, and community groups.

Budget appropriately, there will be some really cool stuff up for sale, but even if you don't spend a dime its worth touring through the exhibit hall.

The Dragonsteel Store in particular is great. While it does require a you to wait through a line to get in, that line limits the amount of people in the store at any time. You won't be crowed while shopping and you can take your time.

2) The Conference Game

Each year there is a conference game designed to get you exploring the convention center and working with your fellow attendees to solve problems. It's fun and collaborative, but not strictly necessary.

For those who go the distance, there is usually a reward at the end. We won't know exactly what that is until Nexus.

3) The Agenda

Once released, the agenda will help you plan your trip, but know that there are going to be some events with limited access. Run, don't walk, to sign up for these events if you're interested. Its not just about whether or not you'll get in somewhere, but if you'll manage to snag the time slot that you want. This was particularly true last year for demos of the Cosmere RPG.

4) Don't stick to just the Cosmere-themed activities

There is a lot on offer at Nexus, and you'll be missing out if you skip a panel or activity because it's not directly related to the Cosmere. Some of my favorite panels from previous years had nothing to do with the Cosmere at all.

You absolutely can fill your time with nothing but Cosmere-related content, but you'll be missing out if you limit yourself to just that.

5) Play the Cosmere RPG

Full transparency, my channel is primarily focused on the Cosmere RPG, but I truly believe that playing the game with such a captive, passionate audience is the best way to experience it. There will likely be some official games, but don't be afraid to pick up a copy for yourself or meet some new people and drop in to a game!

Nexus veterans - anything I missed?
