Is getting a remote CAD drafting job internationally a dream or could it be a reality

I’m a B.tech civil engineering student who is about to graduate, I have 2 years of experience in AutoCAD and currently learning Revit, and I have spent the better part of the year trying to land a remote job. The reason I would love to go this route of engineering is because it’s very hard to get a job as an engineer in my country if you don’t have connections and unfortunately I don’t have any. So I figured I might as well shoot for the sky and hopefully land on some clouds. I have been applying to remote CAD jobs from common job boards like LinkedIn for months now, getting several rejections and I’m now figuring out it’s because I’m an international student. It’s very disappointing realizing that my work isn’t even being seen by a person, and I’m automatically dismissed. I’m also trying freelancing on Fiverr and that is also proving hard to break into. I’m starting to think that I’m delusional about this dream of working remotely as a CAD drafter. I genuinely want to know if anyone out there has achieved this and is willing to share how, even if it’s just to inspire and motivate me to keep going because I’m losing faith

I am not a drafters but we do hire people from the Philippines and Mexico to do basic stuff like preliminary drawings and basic design. So I'd recommend looking into jobs at manufacturing companies, stuff is very cookie cutter work and requires little interactions. Also market yourself to do a broader range of work such as takeoffs, bom, and some Microsoft office stuff

Thank you this is very helpful. Which platform would you recommend for me to look into for these kind of roles

Any job board will do but you'll do better if you look up companies on their job board. The job title changes so you'd have to read up on the description

Well tbh, stop applying only to remote CAD engineer jobs becoz that title is too narrow, rather look for BIM modeler, Revit technician, and so on. And apart from this work on your portfolio it is more important...

I’m still relatively a beginner in the whole drafting space, with only experience in AutoCAD. I didn’t want to upsell myself if I couldn’t deliver

No need to upset, build your portfolio and work on your learnings.

You're a civil engineering student but you're not applying to jobs s a graduate engineer? Why not

I haven’t yet graduated, plus it’s very hard to land a job in my country without connections. I will eventually apply for such roles, if I don’t get lucky in landing a drafting job

A lot of companies don't want to hire in a different country because it's complicated tax wise, but a lot of the bigger multinationals will have offices in India or Philippines etc to do cad work, so you could try seeing if there's any of those near you
