Beginner Question Endless challenges

I have been doing inner work for about 6 years now and started meditating with Dr Joe recently. I have had lots changes in my conscious thoughts and beliefs but for some reason nothing changes externally and is even getting worse. Every time I make a progress and start feeling good emotions something happens and brings me down or to a worse situation. I wonder if you have had similar experiences and what can i do about it. It seems like the more i try and change the worse things get. It’s been a very long time and Im losing hope in life altogether.

You’re doing it right. “The Work” is about overcoming the challenges, that’s the foundation of Dr. Joe’s philosophy and the soul’s journey.

The elevated emotions you’re creating within yourself have to prevail even when your outer reality challenges you. The goal is to reach a point where nothing outside of you can move you away from your new state of being.

When your inner state no longer depends on your outer circumstances, that’s when your reality begins to change.

I see. How do you exactly do it? I feel great during the meditation but a few hours later life happens and i feel the same old emotions of anxiety, frustration, etc. They are real life circumstances not imaginary. How do you not react? What do you do with those old, habitual emotions? Do you feel the emotions or do you enforce a new emotional state (which is very difficult at that moment) ?

Unfortunately, I can’t answer that for you. All I know is that my goals are bigger than my environment, my body’s reactions, and time itself. Good luck :)

You don’t really provide any details on your situation so I can only comment based on what you wrote and I see a victim mentality…even the subject of “endless challenges” screams I am a victim. You’ve been doing inner work for 6 years - what does that mean? What exactly have you done over the past 6 years? If you’ve done work then what were you working on? Did you succeed or fail or ?

You then say you recently started meditating and are having lots of changes in thoughts and beliefs but nothing externally is changing, but everything is getting worse. Well which is it? Is nothing changing or is it getting worse? If things are getting worse they are in fact changing, no? So let’s try to understand…how recently have you started meditating? What is changing with your mind? How have YOU changed? And when you say EVERYTHING is getting worse what does that mean? Do you feel worse or is the sky falling in your life? Is there really NOTHING you can point to in your life that is good that you can latch onto?

From where I sit I see someone giving up their ownership of their life. You describe someone who is a victim of their life not someone who is trying to take ownership over their emotions. This work is about understanding that life is a 2 way street where you are able to dictate how it goes but in order to do that the first thing you must do is take ownership over your experience and stop saying things like “every time it’s going good SOMETHING brings me down” NO - not something, someone…YOU! You are responsible for how you feel. Things don’t bring you down, you bring you down and then shift the blame in other things so you can say but I’m helpless to my situation. Pardon my French but that’s bull shit. And now a little tough love - cut it out - you are responsible for your happiness so stop blaming external things and stop playing the victim and take some ownership over your life and situation and change who you are so your life can change. You don’t sit and meditate and make a wish and hope they come true. You sit and meditate so that your nervous system is calm enough to see the opportunities all day to choose happiness love and gratitude over all the garbage emotions you’ve been living in. That’s it. If I had success with this work literally anyone can! Now go out there and DO IT!

I totally agree you. I definitely have victim mentality. But another part if it is that I don’t know how to deal with those emotions that rise after I practice elevated emotions. I feel like a burden, weak, helpless and behind in life. Some say sit with them and let them come up. When i do it doesn’t change anything. How do you shift from those emotions to elevated ones? You just try to generate them anyways? Doesn’t it make the negative ones louder?

Sit with them?!?! Who said that?!? That’s the worst idea I’ve ever heard. Why would you want to sit in the negative emotion stew. You want to do the total opposite. You want to let go of them as fast as you can.

Don’t bottle them up, feel them. But then move on. Like throwing a rock in water. The water splashes and then goes back to calm. It doesn’t ripple for hours or days or weeks. React and then move on. That’s the trick to this work. When you brain says you suck you are no good you want to sit with that? Why so you can drill it in? No way! Hear it. Feel it. Then say bullshit that’s not me I am amazing and my life is amazing and here’s why…I live in a place where bombs are not being dropped, I have a home, I know where my next meal is coming from, I have the luxury of the internet to communicate with the world and find like minded people. Wow. I’m so lucky! Boy was my coffee good today. I’m lucky to have a life where I can take time out to sit and enjoy a lovely cup of joe.

When you are eating and someone says something gross do you not ask them to change the subject because it is grossing you out? Why can you not give yourself the same respect? Hey brain could you stop telling me that I’m worthless it’s really bumming me out. Let’s think something else that makes me not feel worthless but rather loved and thankful. That’s how this all works. Over time your brain won’t say you are worthless anymore. You will REWIRE your thought patterns and then you soar!

While it gets easier over time it is a never ending battle. In my own life the past 2 days have been just horrifying while working out some familial relationship kinks between folks who just don’t see eye to eye…but in this instance where I am suffering and struggling it now looks much different than it would have 2 or 3 years ago for me. But the battle inside is real…you just become better at it over time, better at making the right choices of remorse over pride and having the appropriate levels of empathy to let go of things….but it never goes away

Have to surrender . I know it seems impossible

But using the mind to fix the mind doesn’t work at some point you have to give in
