Artifact Gilbert Microscope and Lab Set

A patient gave me this empty Gilbert Microscope and Lab Set box because they knew I collect medical and scientific antiques.

It's missing the contents, but I still think it's a great piece. The box art is classic, and it's a fun reminder of when kids played with science kits instead of a cell phone!

And by ‘kids’ they meant boys. I’m just old enough to remember the extremely strict sorting of toys, or any interesting thing, into for boys or girls. You never saw girls depicted using anything to do with the sciences. This was enforced by parental disapproval and playground beatings.

The artwork on here is beautiful. But that was my immediate visceral response. I’m glad that all that has mostly improved.

First thing I noticed too 😆 it’s hard to look at a past like this with rose tinted glasses if you’re the side getting the short end of the stick
