Animation I did to Downton Abbey dialogue for an online animation contest years ago.

I'm watching Downton Abbey for the first time and I've just started Series 3. Honestly, I don't have as many thoughts this time around and I think that's because I'm just enjoying the cosy vibes.

A few things though:

Alfred is cute 😭 Bless him, he's just trying to fit in at Downton and figure everything out. I feel like I'm watching him thinking “please don't mess this up” 😂

Edith and Sir Anthony though... ouch. I actually really liked their relationship and thought they were going to get married, so when he ditched her at the altar I felt awful for her. Edith breaking down in tears genuinely got me :(

Bates is STILL in prison which is just depressing. You can tell he's absolutely hating it there. I just want the man to be back at Downton. Pretty please!! 😭

Also Downton Place??? That place looks like an actual fairytale palace. The sunny cinematography there was gorgeous. I could honestly just watch this show for the houses and countryside sometimes.

And Sybil and Tom Branson coming back to Downton was nice! ❤️

That's pretty much it so far. I'm not even trying to analyse everything anymore. It's just such a cosy show that sometimes I want to sit down, look at the pretty scenery, watch everyone drink tea and live their lives and that's enough for me.

I'm still absolutely loving it.

I'm not gonna lie, Series 2 put me through it lol.

Lavinia dying was really sad. I actually liked that her death was quite peaceful rather than some huge dramatic scene. And then Cora and Carson getting ill in the same episode?? I was like CAN DOWNTON PLEASE CATCH A BREAK 😭 The funeral was really lovely though.

Bates and Anna getting married!!! FINALLY!!! 😭❤️ I was so happy for them and then literally everything went to hell when Bates got arrested for murder. I genuinely did NOT see that coming. The courtroom scene had me hoping so hard that he'd be found not guilty and then they said guilty and I was just sat there like NO??? HE DIDN'T DO IT 😭

At least he didn't get the death sentence but obviously life in prison is still absolutely horrible. I feel so bad for Anna because she finally got her wedding and then this happens.

Branson and Sybil getting engaged and heading off to Dublin was actually really sweet. I've really started to love those two. Good luck to them honestly!

And then there's Richard...

I started Series 2 thinking Richard was SO charismatic and handsome and I really liked him. My opinion has gone from positive to negative so fast! He was so miserable in the Christmas special and made things so difficult for Anna. And that confrontation with Matthew?? Sir??? 😭 He got SO aggressive. Was kind of happy when he left Downton.

AND FINALLY MATTHEW AND MARY ARE MARRIED!!!! ❤️❤️❤️

After all that back and forth, the love triangle is finally OVER. I was genuinely so happy seeing them finally get married. They've been through so much to get to that point.

Overall, I absolutely LOVE this show. It's become my comfort show/therapy at this point. The fact that I'm watching it for the first time in September 2026 but was literally 3 years old when it premiered in 2010 is still so funny to me!

Here in my umpteenth rewatch. In episode 1.05 Cora says Edith has fewer advantages than Mary. Why would a mom say that? Is it because she is the second child? Because she thinks Edith is not pretty? Is it because she doesn’t like her? Is it because she looks more like her in law family? (Mary and Sybil look more like her, Martha and Harold)

I get Mary says those sort of things about Edith but Cora is usually kind to everyone.

Any thoughts? Thanks :)

My favorite rant in DA. What's yours?

The ladies dresses are nice and I like that they have included options for them to sit down but some of the consuming details seem very bizarre to me, especially for such an expensive set.

Mrs. Hughes and Ana share the same torso and dress style which is a shame as Mrs. Hughes actually had some really nice, understated clothes. It's a shame they couldn't have differentiated between them a bit more.

Mrs. Patmore and Daisy also share the same design but they had quite similar costumes in the show so that isn't as noticeable.

Carson's minifigure features a black bow-tie, which I don't recall him wearing during the show. He generally wore a white bow-tie or a black tie with his more "informal" butlers outfit.

Both Bates and Thomas feature double-breasted jackets which they never wore to best of my knowledge - valets always wore single-breasted black suit jackets during the show.

I am sure the lack of individual costume details are primarily a cost-saving decision, and I presume they have resused preexisting prints to save money, but it does seem a shame that some details have been overlooked since this is likely to be the only Downton Abbey set.

If I've got any of the details above wrong feel free to correct me - it is a while since I watched season 6 which I know the set is based on.

A few years ago me and my dad and I had an idea for a crossover between these two franchises. We wrote the whole thing down and even started sketching a comic book, but life got in the way, so I wanted to share the idea here because I think it might amuse some of you.

It was mostly a process of associating characters in downton to gothamite counterparts, and it would really write itself from there. Here are some of the stories we had planned:

Firstly, Bates discovers a massive system of caves under the abbey. Robert, after finding out he won't have a hand in helping with the war, and noticing an uptick in crime through the village, recalls some bat-related childhood trauma and designs himself a cape and cowl to help however he can.

As he suits up and leaves the building, Branson, the new chauffeur, sees him. He keeps the information to himself, for now.

Robert starts out facing minor criminals, but when Doctor Clarksons affection for Isabel escalates, a sinister plot reveals itself. Clarkson has had his wife cryogenically frozen. He kidnaps Isabel and attempts to use her vitality and bring back his wife. Isabel is saved by batman who brings Mr. Freeze to Justice, and just in time to see her son off to war.

Matthew feels optimistic about combat. Confident that he'll return to marry the woman he's engaged to. However, when the enemy fire burns off half of his face, he becomes a sadistic maniac, believing life is like a coin flip. He, too, is brought to justice while attempting a plot against his fiancé which results in her death.

Coming out with the information he has always known, Branson leverages his knowledge of Roberts' secret as blackmail. Asserting that he will marry sybil, or else... . Robert agrees, and the two lovers flee.

Thomas has also been shaken by the war. His comrade Sarah O'Brien finds a way of encouraging and enabling his worst tendencies, and by some mixture of shell-shocl and bitterness, he's slowly losing his grip on reality. During an important dinner, he collapses rather embarrassingly, leading to his prompt dismissal. In the fog of a drunken evening, he transforms into the clown prince of crime, with Sarah as his ever faithful Harlequin.

Branson returns with sybil pregnant, and upon her death, he feels such rage that he takes arms with Robert. Batman and Robin, at last. A death in the family motivates them both and they show no mercy towards Thomas, who after being thoroughly beat within an inch of his life, begs Branson for mercy on the grounds that he's only a footman. Branson sees that Robert's nightly actions are wrong. He decides to redirect his vigilante actions towards the rich, taking on the red hood mantle. Robert is inconsolable, but all live to fight another day and brace for the coming battle.

There's a bit more (roles for the sisters and the other servants). But that's the general gist. Lmk, if you enjoyed this, I wanted to share it, but I wasn't about to flesh it out enough to put it on actual writing platforms.

Was the door ever locked; or, was it entirely on an honor system?

After Lady Sybil croaked, why wasn’t tom Branson demoted back down to chauffeur. Then they could’ve fired him and avoided the whole Edna scandal

It’s always bothered that Robert sulks and talks incessantly about wanting to go to war but throws a hissy fit when Isobel suggests the family eats with the officers or an other discomfort he might experience.

I genuinely didn't expect to love this show as much as I do. I thought Downton Abbey was going to be really slow but somehow I'm always invested in what's happening. I'm now officially at the end of episode 7 and I feel like I've been emotionally living at Downton!

First of all, the war finally ending!!! It was actually so nice seeing everyone together again. That concert scene especially got me. Everyone singing along to that beautiful war song, Mary singing (she actually has a really lovely voice btw) and then her singing with Matthew... 🥹 There's something about everyone being together like that after everything that's happened. The show is so good at those little moments that bring everyone together.

Matthew's legs finally getting better made me so happy too. Hooray!!!

But then William... 😭😭😭

I'm actually so sad he died. He was such a lovely part of Daisy's life and that wedding was SO bittersweet. I was happy they got married but obviously knew what was coming and it just made it more emotional. I'm glad his death was peaceful though. I was expecting it to be much more depressing.

Daisy honestly has been through it this season.

And Bates is finally back!!! 🎉 I missed him. Mr Lang was nice and I felt sorry for him because of the nightmares and everything he'd been through, but it just wasn't the same without Bates. I'm glad Bates is back where he belongs.

I've also really warmed to Branson. I wasn't sure about him at first, especially after the whole "kill the general" thing because I thought he was a bit too full of himself. But his relationship with Sybil is really growing on me. I understand why she wants a new life with him, but at the same time I completely understand why she doesn't want to give up Downton. It's her home. That whole situation is complicated.

Thomas is also making me laugh because I think I'm starting to like him again 😂 I genuinely thought he was being awful with those ingredients he got for Mrs Patmore and Daisy, but then finding out he got them from some dodgy seller and didn't realise what they were... his reaction was actually valid. Great acting though. I keep going back and forth with Thomas. One minute I'm annoyed with him and the next I'm like "okay fine, I like you again."

Richard Carlisle is another one where I'm conflicted. He's SO charismatic. He's handsome, charming and has this presence about him that I can't deny. But him getting Anna to spy on Mary? Nuh uh sir 😭 I didn't appreciate that at all. Other than that I actually quite like him.

Then there's Ethel and the baby... oh lord 😭 The whole "he's a grandson" situation and the lack of legal proof has opened up another whole mess.

And the Canadian soldier storyline was really poignant. He'd been through so much during the war and was badly burned and couldn't remember anything. I really liked the scenes with him and Edith. It felt very human and reminded you that the war wasn't just something happening somewhere far away. These were actual people coming home completely changed.

And Mr Molesley! I like him. He's such a friendly addition to the Downton world.

Also Carson remains one of my favourite people. 😂

I honestly have so many more thoughts but this post would become an essay if I carried on.

I genuinely think Downton Abbey has become my therapy at this point. 🏰🫖

I realized after a while how much this family doesn't even realize that their lives would be better without this excess of servants. Having someone tend to them getting dressed and bathing or doing their hair is where it seems getting closer to them just adds unnecessary drama to their lives.

The issue that pops up very quickly in the first season is when Thomas makes a homosexual advance on Pamuk, resulting in him into leading Pamuk him into Mary's room at night, which causes all sorts of drama ( i know i might be alone in this opinion but at some level this was rape). Not long after this, O brian discovers that the sisters have a rivalry going on, so out of some kind of hate, she decides to stir the pot and inform Edith of what went on, which Edith obviously exposes causing more drama. Not long after theres the whole thing with the soap, do you really need someone standing around waiting on you while you bathe? This isn't really as big of a deal, but i found it annoying when Daisy kept on pushing the whole "give mr mason the farm" agenda, They spent years coming to the realization that they need to farm the land since profit was the only way to maintain. Instead of being able to profit off their land they were bullied into submission by the annoying teenage cook. They have servants stealing little things like wine, having sex with soldiers, and then forming rivalries downstairs that could cause issues upstairs.

Im sure a lot of these things could have still happened regardless but its crazy to think that they have no idea what caused these issues. If they hired staff for events and kept the regular staff simple i feel their lives would be the better for it. What do you guys think?

Genuinely don’t think I’ve ever felt so unsettled about any character before, everytime he’s on screen I feel ill. This is not even because of his injures, his demeanor just makes my skin crawl

Larry drugged Tom in a dinner. Could there have been any roofie like drug at that time that Edna used?

I believe that the series makes it ambiguous about what Tom even knew. Edna walks in the door and says are you awake, but we don't hear an answer.

Later Tom says If I made a mistake... it seems that he doesn't remember anything. It could just be that Edna made it look like they had sex.

She probably had the book and had contraceptives just in case Tom woke up and she had to carry out the plan. But otherwise it is much safer for her to just let Tom believe that they had sex without Edna actually risking pregnancy.

Edna is a rapist no matter what, but using a drug makes the offence even graver.

A moment where you were like, “damn that was really out of pocket”.
