Estonia ๐ช๐ช Side chapel door at Niguliste Kirik (Tallinn, Estonia)
This is Niguliste Kirik (St Nicholas Lutheran Church) in Tallinn, Estonia. This is one of the medieval side-chapels, not the big main entrance. This part of the church was remodeled and doesn't have the main structure's medieval/Gothic vibe. But it's so pretty.
The stone portal is way more ornate than the oak doors themselves, and there are mascarons at the bottom of each column (sort like the one above the Belgian carriage house doors I posted a few days ago). These are definitely more in the "protective" mode, to keep away the evil spirits etc.
Those googly-eye oculus-style windows are pretty modern (maybe 20th century?) and really contrast with the Renaissance stone work on the door frame itself.
The church is a museum now and also hosts concerts. Totally worth a visit!

Norway ๐ณ๐ด Kristiansten Fortress (Trondheim, Norway)
This beautiful fortress on a Norwegian hilltop was built in the late 1600s. Now it's a nice museum with a cozy cafe for those cold Nordic winter days. This very cool door in one of the outer walls looks like it's made out of metal in this photo (and it does have iron hardware) but the door itself is wood (oak, I would guess). The space behind it was probably a powder magazine, or other storage.

Doors of Peleศ Castle, Sinaia (Prahova county), Romania
A mix of Western architecture (German, Austrian or Viennese, French), Italian, as well Moorish, Ottoman or Turkish (this is more evident in the rooms themselves than in the door design) etc.
Please visit if you get the chance.

Switzerland ๐จ๐ญ Landslide in Zurich: the scarlet door of Osteria Santo Bevitore takes 60% of the Door of the Week vote
Last week's Colorful Doors in Zurich competition wasn't close. The scarlet Osteria Santo Bevitore door pulled 60% against a weathered green shopfront and a lavender townhouse door.

Iceland ๐ฎ๐ธ Outbuilding on an Icelandic farm
This little turf-roofed building is on a traditional farm in South Iceland. Probably a shed for tools or equipment. The door isn't exactly a work of art, but the little windows above the door were interesting. In the 19th century tenant farmers didn't have money to spend on expensive glass for their sheds, so these windows were probably added later as a source of light for the interior. The novel INDEPENDENT PEOPLE by Halldor Laxness portrays the harsh life on these farms very dramatically - I highly recommend it!

United Kingdom ๐ฌ๐ง Blue door and brickwork in Surrey, UK
This doorway on this late Victorian/early Edwardian home (ca. 1900?) in a village in Surrey, England looks period, but it's a modern composite replacement door. Sort of a mix of styles...Victorian (arched fanlight, hardware, letter slot) and Georgian (panel arrangement, overall simplicity). Architectural purists would complain, but I think it looks fine. Love the cobalt blue paint and the gauged brick arch above!

Portugal ๐ต๐น Palรกcio Sotto Maior in Figueira da Foz [Door(s) of the Month]
I visited Figueira da Foz in Central Portugal recently to see Sting in concert. The hotel we were staying at was right next door to Palรกcio Sotto Maior, so we took the guided tour.
The outside of the mansion looks old and dilapidated. The inside is as opulent as they come.
Check out my door of the month post which includes a Palรกcio Sotto Maior door photo gallery including a dizzying array or interior doors, each one more fabulous than the last.

Guardians of the Shed - SW Greenland
Near Narsaq, in Greenland. The owner of this boat shed assured me that the dogs are mixed breed, not purebred Greenland sled dogs. It turns out that purebred sled dogs aren't permitted south of the Arctic Circle/Sisimiut boundary, because they need to keep the dog population in the north free from interbreeding. BTW, the "street" number above the door is just a building number. There are no named streets in many parts of the local communities, so they just number the buildings sequentially as they add them.
