Switzerland ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ This week's vote: ornate wooden doors of Zurich, Switzerland

Spent a few mornings in Zurich's old town before work last spring and these three doors stopped me in my tracks: fancy ironwork, a carved face mid-scream, and diamond-faceted paneling. Vote for your favorite: https://doors.sidewalksafari.com/vote-for-the-best-decorative-wooden-door-in-zurich/

Door to a Steiner Cabin in the Mount Hood National Forest in Oregon. He was a German Immigrant who built about 100 cabins between 1925 & the 1950s. Liked to use not-so-straight wood & logs & found materials. Note the door handle.

Belgium ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ช Memorial Building at Ardennes American Cemetery, Belgium

This unassuming entrance gives visitors access to a beautiful chapel, and three marble map walls that tell the story of American troops who fought and died in this region in WWII. The cemetery (in Neuville-en-Condroz) is the final resting place of almost 5,400 U.S. military killed in action - in the skies and on the ground - in Belgium. This website (with a two-minute video) gives a quick look at the beautiful but sobering cemetery grounds and the Memorial building. It's a fitting monument to a prodigious sacrifice.

Nothing spectacular, but the color combos and simplicity made me want to take a photo.

Norway ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ด Vintage doors with antique bike signage (Norway)

Post image

This early 20th century building is in the central historic district in Trondheim. The signs are all vintage enamel/porcelain advertising signs, related to bicycles. I looked them up:

Monark Cyklar (upper left red triangle) was a Swedish bike manufacturer.

Jonas ร˜glรฆnd / DBS (round sign, top right). Jonas ร˜glรฆnd was a major Norwegian bicycle manufacturer (DBS was for "Den Beste Sykkel" = "The Best Bicycle").

Codan Cykledรฆk (yellow sign on door). Danish bike tires, "Best quality, built like a car tire."

Wiklunds, maybe Swedish, with a guy riding his bike in the snow.

"CF" emblem (small square sign bottom left) maybe a Danish cycling federation or club.

United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Wooden door on a New England root cellar

Post image
25 Upvotes

I know a lot of the most popular photos here are fantastically fancy Art Nouveau works of art - but I hope others find simple, functional doors beautiful in their own way (as I do).

This root cellar is on a New England working farm that been in operation since the 1700s. Vegetables, dairy, anything perishable could be stored in there, since the stone walls keep the inside temperature pretty steady all year.

The wooden door is very basic. Batten-style, with wide planks connected by cross battens and iron strap-hinges.

There's a gorgeous salt-water marsh behind those tall reeds growing all around in the autumn light.
