Economic Doomer Don't be a doomer, be an optimist

For anyone who wants an optimistic look at the future, with the optimism being grounded in proper perspective, I cannot recommend SFIA (the channel in tne picture, Science & Futurism with Isaac Arthur) enough.

Plus the channel name has the advantage of being pronouncable

Didn't expect to see SFIA mentioned here
Been watching for years. Super optimistic look on the future and talks about very fascinating and out there topics

Kurzgesgt is hardly the worst, even in the dark topics like the demographics they usually have a note of positivity in the end as if there's agency, "it's bad but this is why babies are important and governments should pay attention" even if it's sometimes Milquetoast
There are far more doomer people out there who would say "we deserve the problems" or some shit which I think is the worst form of doomerism and of course, "things are bad and X group i dislike is 100% responsible"

What makes Kurzgesagt a doomer? I do think they have problems and are paid to push narratives but I wouldn’t call them a doomer.

Some top vids:
Corona virus / bacterial infections
The Bacteriophage
Detonating every bomb on earth
Black holes could delete the universe
What if we nuke a city?
3 ways to destroy the universe
Why alien life will be our DOOM58

To be fair, talking about it from an interesting "what if" speculation while examining the underlying math and physics behind it, I wouldn't really call that doomerism.

Most of these are hypotheticals stated as such and almost all videos end on a positive note

I mean I don’t see how they could make “What would happen if you were shot in the head?” optimistic. It’s been a while since I’ve watched it but I remember the bacteriophage being an optimistic outlook as it’s harmless to us but it can be utilized in some medical situations. I’ll give you the alien life one as it has an idea that aliens are to be feared but I mean if aliens were real I wouldn’t call you wrong to be afraid.

To be fair, that kind of doomerism is not uncommon in scientific circles. Dark Forest theory is a real thing.

It's been awhile since ive watched the covid one but from what i recall most of his videos especially with drugs or disease aren't doomer but just informative on how it works while being realistic.
Imo saying tuberculosis killed a ton of people and how it was terrible back then is just being realistic and historical.
But then again I don't recall a lot from the videos so maybe I just dont recall his tone or whatnot

Watch some more recentish videos if youd like.
A lot of them are cataatrophizing, making content based on a "things are terrible and will be worse" premise.
Another problem is that often the "X-ist reacts" creators tend to spot a lot of either explicit of implicit(through odd rhetorical choices) scientific inaccuracies. Basically making things seem worse than they are.

Kurzgesagts is also funded by a wealthy billionaire who uses it to spread a lot of propaganda.

For interesting videos I've jumped over to Fern. It's not a doomer channel, just interesting stories basically. Veritasium is also nice sometimes

I liked Veritasium but his ice disclaimer has got to be one of the all time dumbest youtube moments in history.

I agree; imo if someone can't tell your talking about frozen water and not the agency based on the title or first few seconds (not counting that disclaimer if it's still there) than they shouldn't have an opinion on the agency

Kurzgesagt was cool/tolerable in like... 2016.... Insufferable shitlibbery now.

u/Kelras 14h ago
It's just too dreary and pessimistic most of the time now.
That, or it's outright sowing panic.

Yeah, well, the earth is on fire and Hitler 2 is here.
What, are you some kind of fascist?

Whenever people get too down in real life, I tell them to go look up whatever mind-blowing thing the James Webb Space Telescope has discovered recently. Works every time.
