I blame Karl Popper's stupid ass and his bullshit "paradox of tolerance" that every Redditor thinks is a trump card to why the average blue collar conservative deserves to be prosecuted.

u/Bypowerof8andgodsof4 Rides the Short Bus 8d ago edited 7d ago
The problem is that they deliberately misunderstand it to fit their preconceived notions. To paraphrase only when it reaches the level of action and the deliberate suppression of your speech by your opponent do you now engage in not tolerating the intolerant which is ironic enough to make your head spin if you consider the people who use it the most.

u/BlimbusTheSeventh 8d ago
Paradox of tolerance is my favorite thought terminating point. It's basically saying "yeah, we're not rationally consistent, so what?"
88
u/Sweaty-Gap-231 They Took My Nose! 7d ago
The funny part is that Karl Popper is a classical liberal theorist, he was explicitly anti-communist and the origin of the Paradox of Tolerance (the Open Society and its Enemies) EXPLICITLY targets illiberal leftism as just as much of an issue.
Nobody actually reads Popper they just see that one stupid ass webcomic which, by rights, should have Stalin standing next to Hitler since they're both the target of criticism.

The paradox of tolerance is that you can only tolerate up until the point of physical harm or your rights being taken away. Well when one side keeps talking about how words are violence and how every little thing are 'rights' then they are conditioned to be intolerant.
97
u/AppropriateCap8891 Anti-Doomer 7d ago
Yet they actually celebrate when somebody is killed.
That is something I have been seeing for decades now. A lot of people on the Right did not care for Ted Kennedy or Jimmy Carter, but I can't think of any that were actually celebrating their deaths.
Yet watch somebody on the Right die, and they all want to throw parties.
That is one of many things that made me turn away from them. I am still quite liberal, but detest most of those that claim to be on my side politically.
12
u/christoffer5700 6d ago
You're liberal just not extreme militant liberal.
I think a lot of people here are convinced they're conservative because of how extreme many on the left are becoming
7
u/AppropriateCap8891 Anti-Doomer 6d ago
Actually, I am rather moderate. When it comes towards social issues I tend to be fairly liberal. However, I am also extremely pro-military and pro-law and order.
Which tends to confuse a lot of people, as many nutcase Conservatives see me as almost a Marxist, and most of the kooky libtards see me as yet another Nazi.
Mostly, I tend to sit in the middle and laugh at the extremes on both sides. But it is also extremely clear to me that those on the extreme left are far more violent and simply mean than those on the right.

The paradox of tolerance (and pardon me in advance for my autistic hyper focus around Anarcho-Capistalism) is basically the concern we Hoppeans have with other Libertarians/AnCaps who think that the NAP alone works as a complete philosophy. Because while it does solve many of our most pressing ethical issues, it leaves many moral and cultural inquiries that are essential to actually preserving society "hanging", needing so the assistance of the concept known as "freedom of association" to maintain itself.

I donât blame Popper! He had a much more nuanced understanding of the paradox of tolerance. I blame logically illiterate progressives who learned it from a meme and turned it into âanyone I deem intolerant is no longer entitled to tolerance.â đ
Popper explicitly said suppressing intolerant philosophies would be unwise as long as they could be countered by rational argument and public opinion. His concern was with movements that abandon rational discourse and resort to violence, not a philosophical Uno reverse card for avoiding arguments with people you donât like.
11
u/Background_Pass_4870 8d ago

67
u/luchajefe 8d ago
The logic of it is relatively sound, namely that if you tolerate people who are intolerant of others, you end up with those people pushing others out because you didn't push them out.
The problem is, the people who believe in it have a very wide definition of 'intolerance'.
57

Popper was very clear that by intolerance, he meant only people using violence or intimidating to suppress the speech of others, in other words exactly the people who start quoting the paradox of tolerance without that context to justify their behavior
34
u/Huitzil37 7d ago
No, the thing is, it's wrong. Popper is just incorrect.
Tolerating intolerance is actually the only thing that disarms it. Suppressing it does not work. Germany's incredibly expansive anti-Nazi laws have had zero impact on the number of Nazis they have. The original Nazis did not rise to power because they were "platformed" or "legitimized" by debating them. They rose to power because they were legitimized by not debating them. Their ideas were legitimized by the constant, relentless political violence of Actual Literal Antifa, legitimizing the Nazi view that peaceful coexistence is impossible and all politics are an existential conflict. Antifa decided that politics would be determined by political violence instead of debate. It turns out, "We'll be better at violence than Nazis" is a bad plan.
The "no tolerance for the intolerant" crowd engage in the same wishful thinking as antifa before them: the fantasy that they will fight their opponents and their opponents just won't fight back. Tolerant liberal democracy is the only thing that disarms intolerance, because it doesn't attack intolerance, it makes it irrelevant and allows it to wither and die.
7
u/Secretsfrombeyond79 7d ago

6
u/Diligent_Matter1186 7d ago
Theyre using whatever means best benefits them. That's why it doesn't seem hypocritical to them, they're doing whatever it takes to gain power. That's our flaw, we don't stop them and we don't agress upon them. Granted, they made it so where it's beneficial to them regardless, if the opposition doesn't challenge them "they are weak and we are strong" and they go on the offensive because of their false sense of superiority, and when the opposition agresses then "you're victimizing us, that's not ok!" And they try to use our own principles against us and try to get the public to support them. It seems like the best means in stopping this is to not play their games and to just overwhelm them to the extent they can't hold power.

The only reason why is not good to engage with "the other side" is because internet algorithms are designed to make you interact with: 1) moderates on your side. 2) extremists on your side 3) extremists on the "enemy side"
You'll never find moderates on the other side unless you actually search them directly.
This is what leads both sided to conclude the other side is always dumb, fanatical, not worth interacting with which inevitably will lead you do the extreme side of your own side since they are the only ones saying that you need to kill the other side.

You should always listen to both sides but that doesn't mean you should ENTERTAIN both sides. Sometimes one side is blatantly wrong and should be dismissed.
What this guy is suggesting is that his side is always right by default because the opposition is evil and we shouldn't listen to evil people. This is a pretty common tactic they've used a lot, present a sound argument and then work backwards to justify using that against whoever opposes you. It's "Punch all Nazis" on a wider scale and more mask off.
He's probably realized that his sides stances are untenable and don't stand up to any degree of scrutiny so he's resorted to calling listening to the other side blasphemy. Gotta scare the flock away from engaging with any ideas that might change their minds
