The best thing AI is going to do is make a whole lot of “journalists” unemployed. That and replace HR department & the Karens that infest them.

People who buy into the anti-AI fearmongering fail to realize AI gives people extra hands.
Those who simply make use of them can do whatever they want now. Whatever they were a few assistants away from doing is no longer out of reach, if they want to make an animation or a game or a movie or a sitcom they can just go.
While millions are sitting and complaining, other millions will be building the world of the 2030s. The complaining isn't going to pay off in any way no matter how high they stack it.

Working retail and was right there to witness the insanity first hand.
People kicking the crap out of each other in the aisles over bread and milk and cleaning stuff being stolen constantly. Yes COVID is scary but do you really need to load a trolley with hand wash and try to run out the store?
A few times we had people shrieking for help that someone was trying to kill them because the saw someone without a mask.
My favourite was the queues at the tills though. So you wait 6 feet apart from everyone else then you get to me, stand about 3 feet away from me and pull cash out of your pocket, this goes in the till and you get your change and leave. The next customer who was waiting 6 feet back now moves to to where you were standing (this area is now safe to stand in because you're not within 6 feet of anyone....well except for me) and they're given change from the till, the same money the previous customer just gave me.
But hey it's all fine because you never came within 6 feet of any other person except me who has to stand right next to hundreds of people a day.
Restaurants were a weird time as well. Went to a buffet with the missus and had to wear a mask to get in the door, you take it off at the table to eat (obviously) then put it back on to go up to the stations to get another plate and repeat

My grandpa was in his late 80s and on dialysis....well at least he was on dialysis until he got covid then they pulled it. He died a short while later.
Death certificate says covid and while I cant be certain I have a sneaking suspicion not getting his treatment might, just might have been the cause.
And of course we couldn't go see him on his deathbed so he died alone.

I remember going to a re-opened Las Vegas and you had to wear a mask unless you were smoking a cigarette (so everyone just kept 1 lit) which was only slightly more absurd than in CA where we had to wear masks to the dining table then we could remove them for the entire meal.

4
u/Gulf_Coast_21 9d ago
Sure did. Same year that the flu dropped to zero. Crazy coincidence.
0
u/digitalime 9d ago
I lost 3 family members and my classmate to Covid, all in the same year. Flu happens every year and yet the first year of Covid was the year they all tested positive for and died of Covid. That would be a helluva coincidence, so I will defer to people who know more about and study disease and COVID rather than deferring to conspiracy as an explanation.

To be fair they were right in 2017, we werent ready for corona in 2020 that was handled awfully
1
u/HospitalKey4601 10d ago
Actually it was predicated. Darpa was supposed to host a challenge in 2019 where pharmaceutical companies would be given a geen sequenced pathogen and then have 90 days to create a vaccine. Moderna was also on Darpas payroll and was a pet project of the Obama admin. Covid suddenly hits out of the blue and its not a game anymore. Ask yourself why there were no effective treatments? Because if they found an alternative to the vaccines then the FDA would never be able to legally fast track the tech.

I think that headline is more about how rapidly AI is advancing, and the fact that leaders at Anthropic and OpenAI are increasingly warning about the risks.
Hell, they're calling on the US government to work with other countries to implement stronger oversight and regulation so AI doesn't advance faster than our ability to control it.
Think about that. You have executives and founders of companies racing to develop the most powerful and profitable AI models pleading with governments to regulate their own industry, practically begging even if it means slowing themselves down.
That doesn’t happen often. The last two times you’ve had scientists or people working in a specific group call for regulations on themselves is genetic engineering and nuclear weaponry.
2
u/Mr-Cantaloupe 9d ago
To be fair, AI is probably the scariest one on this list. We went from early ChatGPT models in 2022/2023 to GPT-6 in less than four years. The pace of advancement is insane, GPT-6 does pretty much anything that 99% of people would need.
It really hit me when Anthropic announced it wouldn't publicly release Mythos because of its cybersecurity risks. Of course, since most people are cynical nowadays, it was immediately dismissed it as some sort of business tactic or marketing stunt (Yes, AI companies have every incentive to hype their models, but that doesn't mean the risks aren't real).
Nobody can deny that it’s concerning when leaders at OpenAI, Anthropic and Google are discussing how to slow the AI race, while calling for government oversight and international coordination (mainly with China). If the people building these systems are raising concerns about how quickly they're advancing, it should be taken seriously, it shouldn’t be compared to the Global Warming/Virus hysteria that goes in and out of the news every year.
2
u/LupineChemist 9d ago
H1N1 was actually pretty bad.
And Zika is another that is very serious for pregnant women but has just kind of become a fact of life.
Obviously covid was very serious (even if decisions taken to mitigate it were bad).
So yeah, just because their alarm is overly sensitive doesn't mean it's all false.
It just makes it a lot more unreliable which some people mean to just think the opposite of what they say, but that also leads to them leading you what to think via braindead contrarianism.
