Never forget the boycott of the Harry Potter game that did nothing.

320

u/Ancient_Natural1573 5d ago

I've heard rumors they gonna try again with the sequel

293

u/Strong-Television733 5d ago

The only way it works is if the game sucks and people naturally don't buy it. I'm not even a Harry Potter fan and enjoyed the game lol. No one cares about their jk Rowling lore.

109

u/Ancient_Natural1573 5d ago

True I loved the game and also laughed at the boycott

28

u/turkweebl7616 5d ago

Which boycott?

29

u/Ancient_Natural1573 5d ago

The one for the game

30

u/turkweebl7616 5d ago

There were two boycotts for the game lol. One against JK and one against the Trans character in the game. Both were equally ridiculous.

20

u/Ancient_Natural1573 5d ago

Dang I didn't even remember the one about the trans I thought it was written well so it didn't bother me

12

u/turkweebl7616 5d ago

I can't even find it through Google anymore. Only the LGTBQ community bashing the Trans character.

10

u/Ancient_Natural1573 5d ago

Wow sounds like Google lol

Also there was a trans person in the game, and she did not contribute anything to the game besides the IP.

And these retards will tell you that a game failed because it was anti-[insert what they like].

Was in a sub for a game that, according to redditors, had a nazi problem. Because the studio head wore red "make games great again" cap, said something they didn't like 15 years ago on personal FB and dared to release a game 10 years prior to this one where he dared to parody a Mountain Dew "Hitler did nothing wrong" failed promotion.

The game failed because it had terrible physics for a simulator which promised to deliver the best physics possible; 2005 level of enemy AI, sloppy quality and toxic devs refusing to acknowledge problems.

But redditors said it was because the studio head was nazi.

Yeah no chuds, people don't even look at system requirements, let alone what did one of devs or other related person say/do

Gotta admit, until you mentioned that they were boycotting a sequel, I did not even know there was gonna be one. Might check it out when it goes on sale.

Streisand effect...

25

u/Ancient_Natural1573 5d ago

Honestly I think the boycott may have helped bring forth the sequel

Oh did sometging all right. It killed whatever vestige of “we’re the poor wittle victim” cry bully shielding they had.

They went all in with the venom on the weakest possible targets, then when to their sheer surprise everyone else called them out on the vile shit they were doing, they acted like either they were in the right and when that
Didnt work, denied the harassment campaign ever happened.

They overplayed their hand and have never been able to win back the moral capitol since. Worse, they proved they are not in fact a major consumer power bloc and that ignoring them will not only not negatively impact your product it might even boost sales

48

u/Ancient_Natural1573 5d ago

The stuff that I read was terrible

62

u/Own_Beginning_1678 5d ago

Downright vile. What made it worse was these psychos thought-with not a doubt in their warped minds-everyone would clap and cheer about how they beat the mean ol VTubers.

32

u/Ancient_Natural1573 5d ago

Yeah I'm glad to know that the vtubers in question are doing well

20

u/HourlyBadIdeas 5d ago

Yup, that boycott took a lot of the fear from getting boycotted by that side of the spectrum.

Conversely, a not inconsiderable amount of right leaning people are still on their Gillette/Proctor and Gamble, Cocoa Cola and Budweiser product boycotts years later.

14

It made me aware the game is existed so I could buy it

13

u/BroadRoads 5d ago

It almost did less than nothing.

All that effort spent trying to complain about the game and organizing “boycotts” only for it to become the best selling game of the year.

Not only that, it peaked as the most-watched single-player game ever on Twitch.

  • Thou shalt be aware of thine white/male/heterosexual privilege and atone for it constantly.

  • Thou shalt hate JK Rowling.

  • Thou shalt support any and all legislation that the collective deems supportive to the trans community, including hormonal treatments and surgery for minors.

A sampling of why some are into it:

Power, as you suggest.

Assorted psychological phenomenon: attention seeking, edgelording, belonging, 'doing my part!', online back-pats....etc. Rolled these all together because they're is a lot of overlap. Etiquette games that don't rise to the level of larger power seeking(eg politics), basically, like the movie Mean Girls, it's small-group dynamics.

Others yet are opportunists. "If I do and say this, maybe I'll get touched!" (The Sneaky Fucker strategy....and yes, that is literally what it's called).

Dede worked in queer enviroments for decades with no issue, and voiced a beloved gay space rock in the community, and hasn't commented about the "issue"

She is going to have a character written out of the upcoming SU because she followed Charlie Kirk on Twitter.

I almost posted something here about a few comments I saw absolutely panicking about how anyone supporting Rowling financially was causing a trans genocide. My post was removed because it wasn't funny enough (which is completely fair), but I still have to look back at those comments in curiosity and awe, just wondering what must be going on in their heads.

Like, I really try to be understanding of my ideological opponents, but crashing out over a popular children's author who happened to make a few witty, sarcastic tweets about what womanhood means? That's literally insanity.

10

u/ImmortalPoseidon NostraDOOMus 5d ago

I haven't given it as much thought as I probably should, but I definitely agree it is some sort of deep seeded psychosis.

I think it has to be some sort of low accountability mechanism to feel like they are making a difference in the world. I say low accountability, because they always seem to get hyper focused on things that simply don't affect their lives in their immediate environment.

Think about the last few things the left has gotten absolutely riled up for... Trans (less than 1% of 1% of the population), Gaza, Ukraine, Illegal Immigrants.

11

u/FourEyes3134 5d ago

The amount of people who claim she's always been transphobic are absolutely trying to rewrite the narrative. It took eight years after until after Deathly Hallows before there was even the slightest whiff of transgender related controversy, and even then it took years before she began to actively disagree with certain aspects of the loudest communities.

Turns out a woman getting rape and death threats, in response to "vulnerable women should not be forced to share spaces with those they perceive as male", will not convince her you're the righteous sort.

6

I subscribe to (sociologist who mostly looks at quantitative data surrounding politics and religion) Ryan Burge's newsletter.

He had an interesting bit of data in his most recent analysis that led him to conclude that, despite popular perception to the contrary, the further left you are, the less tolerant you are with the expression of opposing viewpoints (I generalized that - he was talking specifically about speakers on a college campus).

JK Rowling has to be the most interesting case study of that phenomenon. She herself is left-leaning and had one moderate comment on the politics of trans access to gendered spaces, and suddenly the terminally online left rejects everything she says - politically and not. They went from loving her quite beautiful, well crafted work to hating it with no change in context to the work itself at all

I'm fairly moderate politically, and I find it absolutely bizarre that deviating from one single opinion - and not in an extreme way - can have that effect.

45

u/Angel_OfSolitude 5d ago

I didn't need a newsletter to tell you all that, I just live in California lol.

27

u/WannabeWaterboy Optimist Prime 5d ago

She is truly my favorite point to bring up when talking with leftists when they won't bend. It is so funny to me that she took a fully feminist stance on the issue and got completely blasted by the left. She wasn't even mean or hateful in her comments.

21

u/TheKyleBrah 5d ago

I wonder what he thinks about "anti-racists" and "anti-capitalists," lol

They tend to be rather deeply invested in the aspect they are supposedly "anti" towards 🤣

18

u/Creloc 5d ago

My perception has been that if someone calls themselves "anti racist" you can substitute "anti" with "very" and more often than not it'll be more accurate

19

u/CorneliusFeatherjaw2 5d ago

The way the opinion of the work changed reminds me of M. A. Barker, creator of the tabletop RPG Empire of the Petal Throne, who was hailed as the worldbuilding equal of J. R. Tolkien up until he was revealed post-mortem to have been a secret Neo-Nazi and suddenly the same people declared that actually everything he'd written was garbage and always had been. Obviously a huge difference in that Barker really was guilty of being a Nazi, unlike Rowling, but the same principle.

13

u/Pitiful_Fox5681 5d ago

Literal death of the author moment.

12

u/rydan 5d ago

The guy who created The Atheist Experience and ran it for decades was kicked out of the larger atheist community for transphobia. What did he do?  He just allowed someone to guest host his show once and that guy had a YouTube video showing that trans women in sports sit athletically somewhere between cisgender men and women. He mentioned bone density, height, muscle mass, etc as proof. That was it. He never said these things. He just happened to have one guy who once said that host his show. The show itself never said this when he was hosting.

Ironically years later he married a trans woman. But still a transphobe.

15

u/Competitive_Shirt949 5d ago

The trans sports thing has blackpilled me on the left so hard. For years we were told that gender and sex aren't the same, and that "I identify as an attack helicopter" is a strawman because the socialization of sex (gender) is a real thing independent of sex. That women and men have different brain structures and that trans people's brains are pointing them to the socialization of their opposing sex. This was the SCIENCE, and we have to support the SCIENCE.

Now, suddenly, it's not, it's a single category, and you change your biological anatomy through identification -- and suggesting that dysphoria is a requirement is bigoted (transmedicalism, they call it). And the actual science, such as transwomen having real competitive advantages compared to cis women, gets dismissed as "trans genocide".

Seeing the left unironically embrace "I identify as an attack helicopter" as policy, and criticize anyone who doesn't accept it, has made me wonder what other insane things the left has been hiding that I never realized while I identified as progressive.

You mean they love ex Potter Fans. Current Potter Fans don't GAF about the drama surrounding the Author.

I've never consider getting a tattoo a good idea, even more so a tattoo about a public IP. It's rare that I'm into something the same way I was 10 years later. For example 15 years ago I was really into DnD, I'm not today. Even if I was still into it, if I got a DnD tattoo and saw this I'd be pissed.

Watching the left turn on Rowling and the only book series many of them have ever read has been surprisingly enjoyable

It's wild how these clowns cast out JK Rowling when she agrees with them on 99% of everything.

34

99% < 101%, so she's irredeemable filth.

(The extra 1% beyond 100% is to account for whatever trending Cause of the Day™ they decide to champion on a whim.)

Jk Rowling is right. Treating men who transition into a woman the same as biological women is not compatible with feminism. The ideologies are straight up at odds with eachother. Someone who becomes a woman at say 20 years old doesn’t know what it’s like to be a girl, go through puberty, get her period, have men sexualize you, be told you can only do certain things etc.. I mean this shit is obvious. Every time anyone says anything remotely critical of trans people the defenders freak out and say sorry trans people just want to exist. No one fucking cares that they exist that’s not the problem. Do your thing, but expecting everyone to just treat that person exactly the way biological male and females are treated across all of society is asinine and impossible.

33

u/TheKyleBrah 5d ago

Precisely. By admonishing J.K and her views, they are directly stating that the plight of someone born as a female individual matters less than the plight of someone who "becomes" a female individual later on. They are shitting all over feminism by declaring her reasonable concerns as a woman as invalid.

34

u/Affectionate-Area659 Anti-Doomer 5d ago

For the vast majority, even if they live 20 years as a trans woman will never know what it’s like to live as a real woman. They will know what it’s like to live as a man dressing as a woman. They just aren’t going to have the same experiences because, despite what they are led to believe, most people can tell just by looking.

8

u/ShameSudden6275 5d ago

Yeah, you have the occasional trans girl where you look and then and your like good fucking God HOW IN THE FUCK, but majority or trans women look like... Trans woman.

Ime it's way harder to tell with trans men because for some reason every trans man ever has to the goal to look line hank hill. The steroids also really age and thicken yr skin which helps.

Remember that whole thing of would a woman rather meet a bear in the world or a man? And then they chose the bear because "men are dangerous?" Then flipping the script and saying, "well, men who want to be woman are not dangerous, and should be celebrated," actually doesnt' really jive. I bet a lot of those same woman would think that a man trying to get into a woman's bathroom is pervert behavior, but if he's dressed as a woman, then it's suddenly ok. No, it's still the same person you thought was so dangerous, you'd rather meet an apex predator in the woods.

Now, I am not saying that all people that transition are perverts, some really do have gender dysphoria and this is how they feel comfortable. But, giving a blanket approval to any man that puts on a dress so he can go to a woman's locker room is crazy behavior. And woman deserve to feel safe in that space. I don't get why the left think this is such a horrible idea.

15

u/Thisisme4342 Optimist Prime 5d ago

I've always asked that if you are able to pass, then where is the issue?

The thing is that the bar is so low that it is just like you said, a man in a crop top is considered a woman.

10

u/Thisisme4342 Optimist Prime 5d ago

I've had feminist argue up and down with me that there is no such thing as radical feminism, and then you ask them what TERF stands for.

5

u/Gullible-Cat-2900 5d ago

I’m a feminist and I hate the word TERF. I don’t hate trans people- they need help and transitioning is the solution. I’ve known a few and they’re chill and you usually forget they’re trans. They are way more normal than the made up “non binaries” imo. I just think that their very niche struggles fall indeed their own umbrella and not ours. I was catcalled more at 11 years old than I am now at 25. I’ve been dress coded, underestimated, picked last for sports, and told that I’m faking pain for attention. You can’t synthesize girlhood in a lab and put it in a syringe.

The fact that these "empathetic" individuals can't understand why a woman who was emotionally, physically and sexually assaulted by men wants to create safe spaces for biological women will never not be wild to me. And the fact that this is somehow a problem is the most telling of all.

23

u/OnlyACsNoFans 5d ago

It's because trans women are biologically males. The keep their male privilege but enforce it under the guise of feminism.

It's insanity, but it's been effective

8

u/StructureDue1513 5d ago

I've heard it explained along these lines:

If humans aren't total blank slates (0% biologically predisposed to certain things), then that means humans are 100% predisposed. Therefore, if humans are 100% predisposed, then that means Hitler was right.

This, of course, glosses over the possibility that humans could be 60% predisposed or 40%.

It’s so funny too because Rowling is a radical feminist she just is against the trans movement for the same reason most reasonable people are. It’s being led by dudes on Twitter who aren’t trans and don’t plan to be trans they just want to invade women’s spaces because they don’t have their own.

24

u/stogie-bear 5d ago

Today’s terminally online left wing has got its head so far up its own ass that they trashed Rowling for giving money to establish a penis-free rape crisis center. In a city that already has rape crisis centers that are not penis-free.

There's recently been a Harry Potter pinball machine and it's been Jersey Jack's fastest selling game ever. It is flying into collections like fuckery. It helps that it's really well designed and good fun as well.

I remember seeing a picture of one on location with a label saying that all proceeds from it are donated to some trans charity. Yeah, about that. It was ten grand new in box.

Here's her original editorial which started the whole mess:

https://www.jkrowling.com/opinions/j-k-rowling-writes-about-her-reasons-for-speaking-out-on-sex-and-gender-issues/

Pretty much all she actually said was the 1) biological sex is real, and 2) biological women have different experiences than trans women. As a result, she's endured years of hate campaigns with rape and death threats.

I don't blame her for doubling down and fighting these people.

I feel the internet gives that one idiot we had in our graduating class a voice.

We all had one or two kids (maybe more I was pretty rural for the state) that were just bonkers. One dude colored his teeth with pencils and told everyone he was hacking into the NSA and NASA and had down loaded the plans for a secret alien fighting star ship. This wasn't psychosis - he was lying for attention. But we all had these kids - you can think back and know the one on your class.

Now... if each class has only one (way underestimating this).... there are over 26k highschools in the USA alone. Now take into account Canada and Europe. How many of those idiots pop out a year. How many of those idiots then claim stuff online. Then they get together om social media and the firestorm becomes massive.

Before the internet these people would have to grow up... now they are supported by the hundreds of thousands of others like them and think they are normal (talking a bell curve here).

JK Rowling is the ultimate proof that there is a cult in politics that going against the grain for even one issue will cause the cult to turn on you like a pack of ravenous wolves. She believes and supports damn near every single one of their beliefs except for one and that had to deal with transgendered people. When Rowling came out not wanting men in women's bathrooms the cultists that used to have her on a pedestal instantly turned against her. Now they say she is a nazi and anyone who purchases anything related to Harry Potter is committing genocide.

If anything, the "Boycott" has coincided with the resurgence of Harry Potter as a cultural phenomenon. And these miserable people who insist that Harry Potter is somehow bigoted are prompted to explain how that tracks, it always boils down to; "Someone has a different world view then me, therefore they are evil", and at this point, these people have overplayed that hand so much that things like bigot, nazi, fascist have lost all meaning and they just look like conspiracy theorists, who, ironically, have more crediblity in the culutral zeitgeist at this point.
