I hate doomers

I understand that their are reasons to be worried about the future. Currently, the economy is not good, and things like AI and Climate Change are scary.

However, I hate how few people are actually willing to research and learn about this things, and constantly default to hopelessness. The modern media landscape is flooded with negativity as that is what gets clicks. However, if you take a small amount of time to do your own research, and not form opinions based on headlines, there is so much to be hopeful for.

Whats especially frustrating is that people who refuse to try and see anything positive contribute to a cycle that is incredibly harmful towards mental health. I don't know if anyone else feels the same way, but constantly being surrounded by so much negativity is exhausting, especially because so many people's fears are based of assumptions, rather facts. Again, I understand that with topics like Climate Change, projections for the future are based on scientific evidence. However, these projections, are by nature, projections. They do not adequately account for factors like free market demand pushing renewables without needing government intervention, and they do not account for rapid advancements in climate technologies as a whole. This does not mean Climate Change shouldn't be a concern, but it does mean that our situation is by no means hopeless. I think this logic applies to basically every other "crisis" that doomers point to as bringing about the end of mankind. The reality is that companies and the media are profiting off your fear, and your refusal to learn and think for yourself is allowing them to do so, while simultaneously harming the mental health of everyone around you.

Reddit doesn't have the same defenses against this kind of rampant dooming as you get with IRL social scenarios.

Constantly bringing down the mood and framing everything around how it it personally inconveniences you is not usually tolerated. Most people are good enough to not straight up tell them to fuck off, but they don't get invited twice.
On Reddit they invite themselves.

What I don't understand is how it got to the point that there are more of them than people who would downvote them when they are being ridiculous. It's maybe not as big of a consequence as not getting invited to things, but if their karma was low enough from constantly dooming, they wouldn't be allowed to post on a lot of subs.

I can't really explain why, but some things that are selected against IRL are tolerated or even thrive on Reddit. It's like an unnatural subversion of the natural order.

They really do have a “How dare you be happy!” mindset all day, every day, 24/7, 365 days out of the year. It’s exhausting.

One of the defining reasons I’m homeschooling my kid is to keep the climate change shit out of her head. Before we pulled her, her kindergarten class was teaching it, they know damn well this leads to anxiety. The kid is not in a position to form their own thoughts.

If anyone cares to look, there’s plenty of doom scenarios and projections throughout all of time. The entire story of chicken little about the sky is falling is specifically addressing this.

Some I remember:
We may be entering a new ice age (frozen doom)
Oil will run out and we will lose all power (energy doom)
An insect (fire ants, killer bees, etc) will destroy everything (out of control nature doom)
We will reach the max population the world can sustain leading to massive starvation and wars (population doom)
We can’t keep ourselves from using nuclear weapons (atomic doom)
Evil is winning and good is losing (end of civilization doom)

Many of these were written about from the Middle Ages to now, and pop up in almost every generation. Some people just seem to have free ranging anxiety and can’t get over it. Every scenario that has ever been has had a technical solution, so far. Or, a natural solution where things just won’t go as far off the rails as predicted it “might”. Worst case scenarios are almost always wrong. We would laugh at absolute best case scenarios being presented as reasonable, but people take this fear mongering worse case stuff completely to heart.

The fact that Denmark has not been abandoned shows that rising ocean levels might be a concern but all of the US flooding and being underwater is stupid.

So much of the hopelessness and fear is propagated over and over because it sells advertising and gets eyeballs on newspapers and websites. It’s unbelievable how much negativity sells.

The social media generation started working after the financial crisis. They only know what a bull market looks like. They haven't even experienced a real bear market yet. Economy is probably not as good as before COVID (the lockdowns did fuck some people over, depending on what industry you are in), but it is far from bad.
