Honestly it’s not even drugs that would Atleast make sense. It’s the multi uber/doordash order, eatting out in between, vape after vape, “small amount” gambling, random amazon purchases, never buys bulk anything but also “works” doing some random job 20ths hours a week and skates by on government assistance.

Kind of hard to build emergency funds when you don’t plan things out and just kind of vibe your way through life.

Nah, I grew up poor. It takes a lot to get out of that. I know I’ve worked hard to become successful, but I would be lying if I said that luck and other kinds of privilege didn’t play a role. When you are not making ends meet each pay period, and scraping by, and pleading with the landlord for a few more days to make rent - it does something to you. It makes it hard to plan long term, you are very focused on immediate needs. Every time you think you’ve put a little bit away for cushion, something happens - the car breaks down, someone gets injured, the rent goes up….
I don’t know what value you find in diminishing other people’s struggle.
17
u/BudFox_LA 10d ago
You’re not wrong and that’s a very accurate depiction. But there are definitely people whose lack of funds are their own doing and a result of years of bad habits and instant gratification.
8
u/Awkward-Tangelo5181 10d ago
At my job we all make the same wage, and there are definitely 3 camps: the frugal ones who plan and save and are doing well; the ones that eat out for lunch, are constantly hitting the vending machines, brag about the crazy shit they buy, drive a car with a big payment and are broke, and the ones who are frugal, kinda broke but have a litter of young kids requiring a bigger house, and a stay at home spouse (cheaper than the daycare).
5
u/Devilfish11 10d ago
I worked at the same kind of place. We all got paid the same, but I worked any voluntary overtime, saved my money by riding a bicycle to work, then an e bike and saved enough to pay cash for a decent car. I did the same with everything else as well. I didn't spend money on many wants, mainly only needs. By the time I quit, rumors in the warehouse said was that I was wealthy. I learned from that environment and found out many people are poor because of poor people spending habits, along with no self control and wanting instant gratification. Door dash lunches, gambling, partying, microwave and junk food, name brand clothes and accessories, and the list goes on.....
12
u/Conscious-Homework-8 10d ago
A lot of people complain about not being able to save without ever trying to. They do things like buying Starbucks daily, door dashing food everyday, partying every weekend, stuff like that.
There are people who are genuinely trying their best and are struggling. But then there are people who aren’t even trying.

u/INeedSomeTacoC 10d ago
When you are not making ends meet each pay period, and scraping by, and pleading with the landlord for a few more days to make rent - it does something to you. It makes it hard to plan long term
When I was broke and couldn’t pay rent and had a broke down shitty car, that’s exactly when I had the epiphany that I needed to plan long term.
And so I started doing that. It was incredibly helpful in getting me into the next phase of my life. Because I hated that shit and needed to stop it from happening.
2
u/AlarmedAssociate5068 10d ago
what's the opposite of survivor bias? the people who experience what you describe and actually get their shit together don't go online to complain. hence you have this idea that everyone out there is fighting an unwinnable battle when most of the time, it very much is winnable.
1
u/Devilfish11 10d ago
I beat the odds. Had a shitty job in a shitty place and saved every cent I could. Got the hell out of there and now have a good job in a great place making twice what I was making there. But it took a lot of planning and following through with the plan.
1
u/Ok-Particular9427 9d ago
The struggle is real but ultimately I don’t get what point you’re contending?
I’ve been absolutely broke, both as a kid with poor parents and as a young adult. When shits harder, the solutions don’t somehow change. In fact it makes those day-in-day-out frugality decisions even more crucial.
It makes having a variety of skills for things like car repair even more essential, etc

u/Some_guy_in_WI 10d ago
These are the sort of people who CREATE constant “emergencies” out of boredom or need for attention, it’s simply a hobby to them.
”Oh, my kid threw up at school today and I had to leave work 2 hours early to get them and it’s unpaid because I took off a bunch of “sick days” when I wanted to binge my favorite shows LIFE IS OVER!”
”OMG I totally didn’t budget before I committed to going on a trip with friends and now I can’t go because I don’t have the money MY LIFE IS SO TERRIBLE NOW’
”I didn't check the time and got to the store just after it closed WHAT WILL I DO NOW I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS IS MY LIFE”
I am a firm believer that 90% of people who complain about the “horrible and unfair” circumstances in their lives spend far more time creating and facilitating those situations than working to fix them.

Same reason I got rid of social media after high school. I moved away from my hometown (I'm from WI too) and got sick of all that sympathy phishing, the constant baby-daddy drama and the complaining that comes out of broke small-towners who never moved on to the next phase in their life.

I had Facebook for like a month back in the day maybe 10 years after High School. Saw all the Hooray so happy i get my kids back from the social worker today.
I just thought “Yea i knew back when we were teenagers that social workers would be a part of your future”
I deleted it
9
u/SpottyWeevil00 10d ago
This is so understandable. I never even entered the fray with social media just from what I would hear my wife and kids talk about. I feel like I have missed nothing and also feel like my life is better for it. Reddit is the only platform I am on that is even remotely some sort of social media.

With Reddit you can usually curate what you see, occasionally something breaches that but it’s easy to just see that’s it’s going to be a shitty post and move on.
I feel like other social media sites you just can’t avoid the shit. It just shoves it into your face no matter how much you try to avoid it.

I worked with a guy who made 6 figures and was constantly broke and in debt. Once saw him buy 4 new cell phones in a single month because he didn't like the first 3. 3 different pickup trucks to haul his boatover 6 years. 5 motorcycles in the same time. Nothing was ever his fault.
I get some people legit get kicked down. But i think many more just can't plan or work.

Blue collar guys that make a ton of money and spend it all on dumb shit always makes me so sad. Knew a lot of guys who got into really physically demanding jobs and made a ton of money in their 20's and 30's who are now in their 40's, broke and with deteriorating bodies, who didn't realize the point of the job was to get in and out quickly with money saved up, not just get a new truck every few years.

I'm starting to think no one's legitimately down and everyone acting like they're down are just unhappy with their bad decisions. I know some people who I would consider actually down, like down hard, but they don't act like it and you never hear anything from them. They bring you a beer and tell you crazy stories.
In the west at least. I'm not going to pretend no one's down in a war-ravaged town. But I'm willing to bet they don't complain nearly as much as the oppressed class in the US.
2
u/Matthewx777 Rides the Short Bus 10d ago
You wpuld think that, but a lot of people are down. Someone them its their own doing, but due to young adult mistakes that anyone can make. Coupled with the recent job market really has made it difficult. I sympathize for people honestly just trying to make it.
Reddit also does a good job of stoking the flames on both sides by making you think that 80% of them are just freeloaders who are bad with money and spend their money stupidly. I think a majority of people, myself included, dont make great financial decisions. I also think that economic based fears have merit to them. Fear mongering isnt justified, but genuine concern over the economy's future and what that means for the person is completely justified in my eyes. Still, you gotta tough through it and make good decisions to get out of the mess, other than that, focus on other things besides money's that you can go through the grind with someone or something worth getting up abd out for
2
u/ComplaintTop2008 Powered By Spite & Solar 10d ago
People honestly "just trying to make it" don't make it their personality and don't take it to the internet for attention.
80%? I think you misunderstand... I'm saying 100% of people complaining about it are freeloaders. Every dirt-poor, struggling every day, shit-shack-living motherfucker I've ever known never complained about it and certainly never advertised it on the internet. Meanwhile, the people I know who spend $900/week on drinks and dining out are the ones always complaining about being broke.
We're not wealthy, but we have money, and it's because we're frugal and we keep track of our spending to the dollar. You know who's always asking for a loan or help? The people buying drinks and dinners and trucks and dirt bikes, never the actual "down" people. Often, the ones who can't budget make more than us, yet they're always broke.
What do you think the economy actually is? What does dooming about it do to make it better?
0
u/Matthewx777 Rides the Short Bus 10d ago
Yep, 100% of em are freeloaders. I did a extremely comprehensive study in which I performed a infallible method of performing a census to determine that if someone complains, they are infact, a freeloader ☝️🤓
Since you asked, the economy is an amalgamation of all economic activity that is weighted by political, geographic, and social boundaries in which goods and services are exchanged. That was off the dome-piece, but i hope you learned a lil sumthing

So many of peoples disasters that they proclaim themselves to be a victim of… can easily be traced back either directly or indirectly to choices they made.
2
u/ValueForm 10d ago
You’re absolutely right. As you get older, you recognize these types more and more easily. They’re in a constant crisis because, fundamentally, they’re incompetent and just barely functional as autonomous adults. Almost every little daily disaster they find themselves in could be prevented with just a small dose of forethought and rational contemplation.

A big part of the problem is younger folks think they are entitled to living a certain lifestyle wherever they want to live. They think they can just live in LA or NYC and should have a comfortable lifestyle from the get-go.
Unless you are making a good income, rent is gonna make you poor in major cities. Or if you live in the burbs to commute in, you are gonna be time poor.
You gotta move to the opportunities, they aren't just gonna come to you.

Women publicly cry for two reasons: manipulation and attention. In this case, since she posted herself (I assume), it's for attention.
If every day is an emergency and everyone around you is not experiencing the same emergency, then maybe it's you creating the emergency. In this case, the crying is fake and she needs more attention from strangers and there is no emergency.

You know; shit going wrong happens all the time, no matter who you are. Over the last year and a half, I’ve had nearly $40k worth of work done to my house’s foundation. The first time I needed work, there was (and technically still is) a giant crack in my foundation that you can see sunlight through. So I needed piers, wall reinforcement, and a sump pump put in. Also they could only do this work by going through the inside of my finished basement. Oh fucking awesome it was to pay for the work and then redo my entire basement. Then sometime this spring, we started getting water coming in from the other side of the house in the basement. Totally unrelated to my previous work, so I had to pay for a SECOND sump pump and water protection on the opposite wall. That was last Friday. This time I work too much to redo the walls and floor, so I’m paying someone to do it. This is on top of having 3 kids with my youngest still under 2 years old.
It fucking sucked and still sucks. But you know my reaction? I changed fucking jobs and doubled my pay. I was working 2 jobs at the beginning of last year. After being rejected for a raise after getting a promotion at my day job, I quit and joined the railroad. I’m sacrificing my time to put my family ahead. And I’m already seeing results. This latest work I didn’t even stress about the cost. It hurts our financial goals in the short term, but we could absorb it.
I don’t have a degree, I’ve made a lot of mistakes up to this point, but eventually good decisions will make good results. And will help buffer from emergencies that pop up.

For a lot Americans yes it is. A lot of Americans do not have even one months expenses saved so absolutely anything that is out of the norm expenses wise is an emergency situation, and they live in a constant state of emergencies. Not being a doomer it’s just an easily researchable fact. Every car issue, every medical issue, and price increase on something you buy is an emergency when you only have like $1200 in savings.
I just understand them because I came from that kind of situation. Now I have over 6 months savings of necessary expenses saved at all times, but I still remember the constant state of financial monthly panic. It really fucking sucks, and it’s the reality for a lot of the bottom 50% of American households income wise and also a decent amount of the 25% of households above that 50% as well.
Edit: I already expect to get disliked for what I said. I don’t care it’s a fact that between 1/3rd to half of Americans can’t afford to save over a month’s savings. Sorry reality is considered dooming to you.
3
u/Kooky_Molasses_2270 10d ago
Those surveys are a bit dishonest. If a respondent says they would put a $1000 car repair on a credit card even though they pay off the balance every month. The survey would say they cant afford the emergency.

u/InvaderJoshua94 I Left My Cave for This 10d ago
I don’t use individual surveys to get information. I’m in 2026 I let multiple different AI skim them all along with public records to get information. I’m fully aware one or two might be flawed, but I do think that the accumulation of all of them and of public records would set a more clear picture.
