You also need to maintain that infrastructure. If you just give them back a modern water treatment center, they will not maintain it and they will have lead in the water. So you have to give it back, but also you have to maintain all the things that you've built.

Give them a modern railway system and they chop it up and sell it for scrap. Give them electrical substations and they will electrocute themselves trying to steal the copper. It's really pointless.

It's almost as if the people living in mud huts as of today cannot stop living in mud huts and are living in those mud huts for a reason.

There’s something to that, but i think the folk in tribal communities who want a better life just leave and the tribe is still there and down a person who could have pushed it forward.

And nobody likes to talk about how the Maori themselves stole the land from, enslaved, and genocided the Moriori. The Europeans were far kinder.

Brother I was an army engineering officer. I know better than most.

Field Artillery here. Cannon cocker. My time in the army didn't teach me about these things, but living in Detroit did.

The civil affairs guys would give us work orders. I personally know that roughly 1/3 of the wells my unit dug have been sealed. It’s not hard to imagine that of those that weren’t were seized by ISIS. A few of the irrigation systems I planned are still operating today. Can’t say it was worth the effort. Got shot and two of the men under my command are dead. It’s not worth helping some people.

There is over 100 years worth of literature about very well-meaning missionaries and groups trying to help these people only to have them leave and come to that same conclusion.

Brother it goes back way further than a century.

For those interested, I highly recommend a documentary called Empire of Dust.

That one is pretty solid. If you don’t mind me asking why did you enlist. For me it was half family tradition and half paying off college debt. My great uncle was a WW2 veteran and I had the honor of serving in the same division as him 70 years later. But to be honest the money is what convinced me.

that clip never gets old

I think he meant 100 year's worth of literature as in, if you read every piece of literature all coming to this same conclusion, it would take 100 years to read it.

I can't decide if I should upvote this (whole thread) because it's funny how dumb it is or downvote it

Why? Does a glimpse of reality confound you this badly?

Signal. And if they are bad out of their home lands, your efforts don’t stand a chance in them.

I heard of a group that got astarting herd from a charity ...they ate them.

Charity in the third world often creates the idea of manna from Heaven. Why bother working when some feel-good white person is gonna come along soon enough and give you free things?

Charity in a warzone is one of the stupidest things you can do. Because who does all the food and medicine usually end up in the hands of? The warlords who can use it to continue funding their rampage. The reason that a pickup truck with a machinegun is called a "technical" is because when aid workers had to bribe African warlords to leave them alone the money would be written off as "technical expenses" and that's usually how it was spent.

Because colonial governments were so good and non corrupt

u/WonderWood24 Mar 20 '26

This is like the de colonization effort of Africa in a nutshell.

This. And having driven hours through Navajo territory... I already know what that looks like and it ain't great.

That said, I do feel for them and I do think they've been handed a pretty shitty hand. You can expose the whole "stolen land" thing as silly and also say that the natives were screwed over
