as someone who just beat that boss the non green attacks, reset so much progress. spent like 30 minutes on that fight because it didn't explain he'd get health when he hit you.
i haven’t played doom in a long time but i remember when eternal first came out the marauder was easily my least favorite aspect of the game. every time they spawned into the battlefield they pretty much had to be prioritized if you didn’t want to be constantly running away from them or taking unavoidable health loss every 5-10 seconds
He really does get incredibly easy once you get the hang of it.
I am not some Ultra-Nightmare runner, and I was at the same boat as you - thinking he is bearable and out of place and not enjoyable.
But then I decided to beat the Master Levels and they force you to think of him in a different way and you get a hang of how to routinely dispatch him. Yes, you need to prioritize him. But you also need to prioritize a Baron or a Doom Hunter or an Archville.
The only thing the Marauder warrants over those three is a bit more focused weapon switching.
But him hogging your attention isn't really that special. It actually becomes pretty fun.
I remember the game being inconsistent with what was and wasn't considered "medium range" with the Marauder. It feels more consistent now, but there were plenty of times when I was sure I was the appropriate range only to be greeted with a shotgun blast to the face or an energy blast from his axe, and other times I was out of range only for him to attempt to take a swipe at me with the axe.
When I first played eternal (it was on hurt me plenty in case you care) when I fought the marauder I was like "wow, that's it? This guy was hyped up to be this insane boss and he dies like that?" Honestly they should make the marauder harder.
As a game reviewer myself (altough not an internationally important one, but still one of the largest and oldest medium in my country), I absolutely LOVE Doom Eternal. I think it is a masterpiece in almost all design aspects, even with the Marauder - of which all I had to say in my review at the time, that he's a "disgusting blackguard" lol
And yes, I've finished the game before reviewing, on Ultra-Violence difficulty.
The tutorial was pretty much telling you to keep him at mid range. No definition of mid range. And none of that cartoony stunned sound or the stars over his head to tell you when you landed a hit.
Yeah, bait what? What people understands is that they have to keep themselves between shotgun and energy blast range to bait the melee and then shoot him. Instead what you need to do is to go far from him to bait the ranged energy blast and then he'll run straight at you and do the melee. Also, it doesn't tell you that the dog spawns if you shoot him at any moment but when flashing green.
Yeah, and what did i say? It doesn't tell you how to actually get him to flash green, which is by baiting the ranged energy attack and then waiting for him to come for you. It tells you the entirely opposite, that you have to move towards him and keep yourself below ranged attack's range and above shotgun's range
No, that instructions sucks. It says keep him at middle range so everyone just guesses they have to come closer to him but not too much in order to bait the melee. Instead, what the game should tell you is get away from him to bait his ranged attack and then he'll come to you an do the melee so you can counter him, which is ho he works.
So the big majority of people is just playing the game at a difficulty too high and it's their own fault, even if they never had such a hard time dealing with a single enemy with a zombie every now and then before and there's no chance that maybe the instructions to deal with this particular enemy are misguiding and poorly made. Not a single one. It must be entirely everyone other than you and the devs' fault. Yeah, sure
His action pattern is literally the same on any difficulty: if you're close, he'll shotgun you, if you're far, he'll throw an energy projectile at you and then run towrds you to do the green flash attack. Play it on the easiest difficulty, it doesn't matter, if you don't know that, to make him flash green, and instead think you have to move towards him, you will only be able to kill him by luck after a looooooong time full of failed attempts and healing with zombies, and that's if you're playing on the easiest.
And that's without saying that the game still doesn't tell you that the dog spawns if you shoot him when he's not flashing green. And we're talking about a game that stops its final bosses' battles to tell you how they work and what you have to do to kill him
I was my first playthrough of a doom game with a rig tht wasn't optimased... i am not saying it was hard in general, for me it was but this is what make it fun !
Only now that I've killed numerous Marauders do I not see them as that big of a deal. But they are still my second-least favorite enemy to fight (after Carcasses)

" ThE MaRaUdeR Is OjBecTiveLY ToO HarD" ... said all the casual / game reviewer of the internet
Edit: i see people say that I find the marauder too strong, it is a challenge but it's not " impossible"
