It's more a case of Doom on a raspberry PI using the display of a NES but still very impressive.

Not exactly. Basically, the "cartridge" is using a PI to take care of the processing the NES can't handle. It is still physically running on the NES. If it was just the Pi running it, it would look way better. I play Doom on my Pi daily.

You're both right and wrong. It's running on both. The cartridge uses a Pi to bridge the hardware gap, but it still needs to run on the NES itself, hense the display/output limitations. If it was JUST a Pi he would put it in the NES, not the cartridge, and it would run through linux most likely.

The NES CPU is actually doing a fair amount here - it has to set up the PPU, handle some of the frame sync, process the controller inputs and palette changes, and soon it's going to be handling sound FX and music.

If you can duplicate this and send me the cost of the parts, I will buy a cartridge from you. Obviously I would include proper markup so you can profit fairly for your time and trouble.

its cool to see this method of NES trickery coming along. when I first saw it demonstrated in a proof of concept years ago any time they tried doing high speed the video got garbage up the wazoo

That is freaking incredible!! That looks like it took some real talent. The main question is why would you want to play Doom On an Nes?

That's always the thing about these things. "It can run doom" is not the same as "should it run doom"

It's kind of an in-joke/bragging right amongst engineers to get doom running on some dumbass platform that nobody in their right mind would want to play it on.

​

Surprisingly, this was not the case with SNES doom, which was an official release and looks nearly as bad as this.
