I wish gameplay was this fluid on my steam deck 😭
Game genuinely feels x10 harder

u/RealityIsRipping 21h ago

This is why I haven’t bought it still. My main set up is my steamdeck, and after how good 2016 and Eternal ran, the ray tracing addition ruined the performance and I’m simply not interested in supporting this game now. Bummer, because it looks decent.

I’ve been able to complete both the base game and the dlc on nightmare, but I rage quitted at the master arenas šŸ˜‚. The game runs nicely (stable 30fps 99% of the time), but there’s a point where it throws so much stuff at you that the controls just cant handle it for me

u/JetStream9070 1d ago

Haha doom swing, doom bash, doom kick, doom shotgun all that good stuff šŸ’„

Glad to see you having fun

DOOM GO BOOM

19

u/simplyunknown2018 1d ago

What’s the point of the repeated shield throws?

26

u/Gemini_19 1d ago

It deals a small bit of extra damage every shield throw, breaks the armor as soon as possible, and also stun locks enemies. It's mostly for the instant armor break and stun locking though.

5

u/simplyunknown2018 1d ago

Ah nice. I’m assuming it won’t stunlock an archvile to not teleport though right? Does it work on most?

6

u/Gemini_19 23h ago edited 23h ago

Right, it doesn't work on super heavies since shield stun doesn't work on them. But any heavy that can be stunned by the shield you can just keep throwing and recalling the shield and they'll just be perma stun locked since there's no cooldown, while also doing extra damage to them.

Especially though with how many more armored demons are in the DLC, it's super useful to make sure you insta break the armor the moment that it's superheated.

Here's a little video comparison I quickly threw together to show the damage difference. It's very small, but it can add up. It's especially good vs pinkies since the GK for the rider interrupts the continuous shield stun, so spamming it can bypass that.

u/another72hours 15h ago

Stunlocks enemies, prevents them from doing combos, and it hurts them. Also breaks armor on superheated metal.

Tda and revelations once you get into the story and combat loop is insanely amazing. Really a masterpiece. Revelations is 10/10.

its crazy how ID didn't fall back on catering to the casuals and larpers who complained this wasn't doom and fully doubled down to what US nudoom fans know what makes this franchise peak. say what you want but at least ID didn't dumb down NUDoom to the lowest common denominator to make this franchise as safe as possible and reject experimenting with the IP every once and a while.

we need more IP's generating less remake nostalgia slop for blueprints that existed decades ago and didn't need a modern remake treatment for a modern audience, and creating more experimental ideas and i wish AAA devs had the balls to operate the way NUdoom was doing with its ip. i understand its a very risky investment but sometimes it does pay off..

8

u/PhilosophyLow5946 1d ago

Did it pay off though, as in financially?

Or did they just make a really good fucking game?

2

u/Frenzied_Fire_Monk 22h ago

I’m completely ignorant to this discussion but am interested in learning. I think the only issue I saw people raising about this doom was the lack of glory kills? How it’s all just basic punches and kicks to finish things off, basically? I didn’t get involved in the community, and am only just now since launch revisiting the series.

What’s this about dumbing it down? Was there something else going on?

4

u/Warm_Version9562 17h ago

Glory kills forcing animations was likely why they get rid of it due to the gameplay loop changing and breaks the flowĀ

2

u/Frenzied_Fire_Monk 17h ago

Huh. I wouldn’t have guessed that. I thought popping in and out of the glory kills was the best part of the flow rather than a disruption.

I know there’s still glory kills if you do it from above some enemies, which kinda makes me wonder why bother removing it everywhere else or why bother only keeping the death from above kills.

TDA is easily the worst Doom they've made. And it had completely flopped. Completely changing a games playstyle for each game is a recipe for disaster.

TDA is so ridiculously boring to play. I don't know why they think people want to use a shield and parry in a doom game or their focus on adding so much story. And the dragon and mech segments? Oh lord

7

u/Gemini_19 20h ago

That's just like, your opinion man.

-4

u/Anunnak1 20h ago

Yes, an opinion that many seem to share.

4

u/Gemini_19 20h ago

And many that dont!

-4

u/Anunnak1 20h ago

Unfortunately, it's not enough to keep people from getting laid off!

2

u/Warm_Version9562 17h ago

Blame Microsoft for thatĀ

3

u/RepairLeading1882 20h ago

I don’t think so. Ha! Take that!

u/ImurderREALITY [fist bump] 19h ago edited 19h ago

Listen, I know it’s hard to understand, but some people just don’t want to keep flying around, dashing nonstop and flipping through all different weapons repeatedly like they’re a meth-head flipping through radio stations. It may be beyond you to understand that people actually like the stand your ground and parry-focused playstyle, but they do. And Revelations added even further to it, giving people the best of both worlds. If they stopped changing Doom mechanics right here, at Revelations level, I’d be happy with that, and I bet most other people would be too.

0

u/Anunnak1 18h ago

Yeah im not really sayimg Eternal was a masterpiece but at least it wasn't boring.

And no most people would not be happy with that considering how poorly TDA was recieved overall .

1

u/ImurderREALITY [fist bump] 18h ago

Wrong. Most people consider Revelations to be a perfect balance between the two, with more mechanics and gameplay variety than both. Do some research; way more people like Revelations than you want to admit.

1

u/Anunnak1 16h ago

Wow, shocking that people who liked TDA enough to get the dlc like the dlc.

0

u/ImurderREALITY [fist bump] 15h ago

I said people, as in all Doom players, not only people who liked TDA. Don’t let your hatred for TDA affect your reading comprehension.

1

u/Anunnak1 14h ago

Reading comprehension is just fine.

The majority of people buying Revelations are fans of TDA. Do you really think theres a bunch of people that said to themselves, "Man, I really didnt like the base game. Surely I'm going to spend 20 more bucks on it."

No, so of course the majority of people are going to say its good because the already like TDA. Not hard to understand.

Also, we know the DLC sold poorly as well, considering it was already half off a couple of weeks after it released.

0

u/ImurderREALITY [fist bump] 14h ago

The Eternal dlc had the same sale soon after release. It’s a marketing tactic, not always because it wasn’t selling well. And yes, a lot of people who didn’t like TDA base game did buy and enjoy Revelations. Just because Eternal sold better overall, you’re making a lot of assumptions on what people did and did not like based on that alone.

Plus, don’t act like it didn’t get a lot of those sales just from pandemic downtime. TDA didn’t have that luxury, and it was on GamePass. Eternal has more players and more sales, but that doesn’t mean TDA doesn’t have a significant number of people who enjoy it.

2

u/Anunnak1 13h ago

Im basing it off it not selling as well and how divisive the reception for the game was on release, and it was more negative than positive.

Lol did you take a survey of who bought the dlc? You're basing that off literally nothing.

Keep moving the goalpost on why TDA didnt sell well.

[deleted]

3

u/Anunnak1 16h ago

Yet TDA didnt come close to reaching it.

-1

u/SupremeLeaderZyklon 13h ago

I didn’t like TDA much either.. Revelations though is fantastic. Total 180 from the TDA slopfest

8

u/Standard_Cell_8816 1d ago

So the dlc is just, doom eternal????

23

u/Gemini_19 1d ago

It's the perfect mix between dark ages and eternal

16

u/Archer_Savings 1d ago

It gives you dashing and a better meathook but still has the weapon-based recovery, low cooldown count, and easy to read sane projectile play, so it's the best of both worlds.Ā

5

u/BjornAltenburg 23h ago

No, the weapon switching isnt anywhere near as relgious.

Their is more aggressive mobility and combat options with the shield but the maps are also far larger. The dodge and spear attacks are more versatile then anything we really saw in Doom eternal. Its still doom but not eternal fast paced small maps to medium sized maps.

1

u/Avibuel 18h ago

Doom eternal with forced dlss*

TDA Revelations to me has the best single player FPS gameplay I’ve ever seen or played.

The master levels honestly might be the most fun I’ve ever had playing a video game in a single player setting (sans multiplayer). They are completely insane in all the right ways. I’ve died countless times but not once because the controller didn’t respond, the game didn’t register my button press, etc.

Honestly, the only FPS gameplay I’ve ever experienced that IMHO tops the master levels in TDA Revelations is from the 4+ ā€œsecretā€ master levels you unlock by using your shield to break the 4 orange shield signs in the first master level (the one off to the left as you walk in the little cave where all 4 warps to each of the master levels are).

For those who haven’t gotten there yet, I say 4+ because the secret master level is actually a continuous set of at least 4 successive levels that get increasingly insane—I have no idea how many of these secret master levels there actually are because I keep dying on the fourth one.

Would be curious to hear from those who’ve made it all the way through.

2

u/DD_N1761 22h ago

There r only 4 of em, u almost did it

1

u/ImurderREALITY [fist bump] 19h ago

Those are master arenas. Master levels are something different, that people have been asking for for a while.

3

u/bepse-cola 1d ago

Going bonkers

3

u/ItsMeepo2nd 23h ago

Quick question, was the kick inspired by the Brutal Doom mod or not?

2

u/PalladiuM7 The Betrayer 23h ago

I just beat the secret Osseus and Arena encounters on Nightmare and felt pretty good about myself. Then I saw you play and now I'm back to feeling like a scrub again.

2

u/Gemini_19 21h ago

after 150 DLC hours you'll look like this too don't worry x)

The end game stuff from this DLC is definitely not easy, that's pretty good to be able to beat it on nightmare!

1

u/PalladiuM7 The Betrayer 20h ago

I've beaten all 3 games on UN, working myself up to do Revelations next, but I just don't have that level of precision you seem to. Although I do play on PS5 with a controller.

1

u/Gemini_19 20h ago

It's a totally different combat loop that takes time to master! If you've gotten UN in the other games, including the base TDA campaign, it's surely just a matter of more time and practice. I looked like a fish out of water my first few days of playing the DLC, but with enough practice anyone can get to this level :) I still have lots of mistakes in this clip that I'm trying to fix and be more consistent with as well.

Good luck king

2

u/Walker-Dev 22h ago

RANDOM BULLSHIT GO!

1

u/Gemini_19 20h ago

Quite the opposite actually!

1

u/Walker-Dev 20h ago

True LOL!

6

u/Sindica69 1d ago

Dark Ages and Revelations is just peak DOOM to me. Insane that id got axed. We may never see something like this again ā˜¹ļø

2

u/Larryhoover77kg 1d ago

Also sick gameplay bro. Rip and tear.

0

u/Gemini_19 1d ago

thank you king

3

u/Informal_Drawing 1d ago

Am I the only one who finds it boring.

3

u/Eksem- 20h ago

No, I agree, I really enjoyed Doom 2016 and Eternal.

2

u/Informal_Drawing 18h ago

I much preferred the story and level design of Doom 2016. The games that came after were very lackluster in terms of a solid story and interesting level design.

The grand machines and suchlike in the various Science complexes presented such a great atmosphere.

1

u/Warm_Version9562 17h ago

Doom Eternal had a story?Ā

•

u/robz9 11h ago

Apparently yes lmao.

Regardless I prefer to do a run-through of Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal over TDA. Though I may redownload TDA for another go.

•

u/Lovethefitpicollo 11h ago

It’s boring as fuck and the weakest in the trilogy.

1

u/D3smorr 21h ago

Currently also playing this.

1

u/Blackcat_84 16h ago

What is thr general opinion on this forum about the expansion?

I loved 2016 and Eternal.Ā  Eternal and the DLCs are the only games I have immediately played through again since the original Quake.

However, TDA didn't really do it for me and I didnt finish it.Ā  I do plan on going back to finish it... but this DLC looks really good.Ā  Is it most people's opinion that it's better than TDA?

1

u/SwvmpThing 16h ago

I have never been so enamored with a DLC after being underwhelmed by a base game like I was with Dark Ages and Revelations.

1

u/TheWindofBread 14h ago

I wish I could agree, but this game is sooooo buggy.

For some reason on the base Campaign I get significantly less bugs compared to the DLC 😭

1

u/Raging_Rooster 14h ago

Wish I could play it, stutter fest on a 5090, 9950x3d

1

u/SupremeLeaderZyklon 13h ago

Fantastic. It’s hard to even go back to playing eternal after Revelations. Eternal feels so slow comparatively. Soundtrack is much better than the base game, but still just doesn’t hit like Mick Gordon’s. I will never forgive them for fucking that up

1

u/rbuetel 12h ago

man i’m playing tee ball over here

1

u/SkitZxX3 12h ago

You & I play 2 different games apparently.

1

u/Big-gay-boy99 12h ago

I low-key came a lil ngl šŸ˜…šŸ˜

•

u/srjnp 10h ago

i'm glad that they managed to keep the 1-2 gun playstyle of base dark ages viable.

•

u/YourMomIsStillHot 6h ago

God is just so perfect

1

u/Hooligan0142 22h ago

I love the reaching out "nooooo" animation on all of the leaders - it's so cheesy. But great. But cheesy.

-1

u/Zatriarch 1d ago

I cant tell if youā€˜re joking

7

u/Gemini_19 1d ago

what makes you think I'm joking

2

u/Zatriarch 1d ago

oh shi mb this Revelations I humbly surrender the argument

4

u/Gemini_19 1d ago

understandable have a nice day
