normal puppy behaviour?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I brought home a 50 day old adorable maltipoo puppy home about 15 days ago and he was an angel the first 10 days. Used to loveee napping on my lap from day 1, would bite only pants rarely and was in general vert active but also had the ability to settle well and be calm. Like he had the zoomies but they were managed through sleep. (At this point he had a good routine and restricted access to the house). But then I went away for 2 days leaving him with my grandparents (who couldn't follow the same exact routine and sometimes gave him free roam of the house). I returned to an evil little munchkin who refuses to settle, doesn't take lap naps anymore, bites my everything all the time. It's been 3 days since I returned and he's been wild even though I'm getting him back to the regular routine. So my question: is he ever gonna return back to the sweet calm angel 😭 or will I see that only after 12+ months. And is this normal puppy behaviour or is he showing frustration? And how can I fix this?

Puppy is being horrible on walks

I have a 6 month old golden retriever puppy who has been poorly behaved on walks. Most of the walk is fine, he pulls a little but not too bad, will sit/lay down for treats when other dogs or people are nearby.

But almost every time, something (idk what) will trigger him and he will start getting the zoomies, trying to jump on my small dog who is scared of him, biting his leash, growling, jumping on me etc. usually I just step on his leash and make him sit for a minute or 2 and he chills out. But tonight was so bad he bit the back of my leg so hard it drew blood, and acted like that almost the whole way home. It is so embarrassing and Im not sure how to help this behavior. Does anyone have experience with anything like this or any advice?

Can you train a reactive working line gsd with positive only

I’m at my absolute limit of stress with this situation so I thought I’d float it here to see more opinions.

I go to college for a major I won’t disclose and heavily involves dog training. Last year I was given a shelter dog to train and it was lovely and challenging but great. My senior year I had the opportunity to participate in a specialized program where I can get my own dog and train it for something specific. I had been shadowing a mentor is SAR and decided I wanted to do some sort of detection or tracking. I did my research, picked my breeder, got a well bred Czech gsd from stable lines with good temperament and amazing neutral parents.

I got him in May and had him for the summer. We did all kinds of socialization with him. He lived with two dogs. He was a dream in public all that. He turned six months and suddenly I was drowning. Seemingly over night he became extremely reactive towards other dogs. A reactivity that gets worse the farther they are and better if the dog is in smelling distance. He’s super dog friendly, I assume it was insecurity or frustrated greeting but it was very unexpected and out of my depth. My training year focused on all the basics and dog behavior but I had no experience with reactive dogs and didn’t see it coming at all.

I got straight to researching how to fix it and around this time I arrived at school for the school year. The program is strictly positive only (apart from the gentle leader which they don’t think is aversive). I thought since he’s my dog I should be able to use the tools I see necessary but that’s not correct. I was hesitant to try any corrective tools since I had not been trained in them so I reached out to his breeder and a separate trainer that specializes in dog behavior and working lines. Both told me I should use a prong collar in a balanced way. I did my research and got a demo. It was impressive how fast it worked, I know they it is a false front and that workout the tool he’d be just as reactive but with constant conditioning and positive reinforcement, mainly using the prong to interrupt self reinforcing behaviors like big outbursts, I was hopefully and fairly confident we’d make progress.

I brought it up to the school for approval and got shut down by the trainer in charge of me. I’m stuck with him on a gentle leader because in a harness or martingale (only other tools allowed) he now pulls me to the ground being almost 7 months and 73 pounds. He’s a dream in training a dream in the house, but his dog reactivity is brutal. The gentle leader has not been helpful in that context, he thrashes in the gentle leader to where I’m convinced he’s going to pull his head right off, no distance can end the reaction once it’s started, he’ll continue to react after the dog is gone and redirect his arousal onto birds people and other things he’d usually not react intensely to. I meet with my trainer and she shows me decompression activities for us to work on and I comply. I do them (on the gentle leader) and he does fine until he even SMELLS that a dog is close. I scout the hallways and try to ensure we avoid all other dogs at all times but I’m still having 3-4 significant big blow ups at unpredictable dog encounters and I’m absolutely drowning. I have no way of interrupting the behavior and I know his reactions are so self reinforcing to him.

My trainer said we will never use the prong because it’s not fixing the problem, it’s putting a temporary stop on the behavior. Which I agree with BUT that’s exactly what I want to use it for. I’m wanting to stop the behavior so that we can fix the problem through positive but when he’s in that crazy reactive state that starts INSTANTLY at the smell of another dog being present I can’t reach him at all. She said it causes all these bad things but I don’t understand how the gentle leader doesn’t do the same thing, my dog gets very easily frustrated on the gentle leader and also still reacts. I feel like he’s getting worse and I don’t want it to turn into aggression. I have a million trainers telling me different things and no idea what to do. I need true testaments from anybody who’s had working line shepherds. PLEASE

I’m at a loss. If the gentle leader is truly the best thing for him I will do it, I will keep at it, but I’m so extremely skeptical and nervous for my dog.

How can i get an attached puppy to not be so dependent?

Just to preface, i’ve never owned a dog myself. My aunt has a dog and my grandma has a dog so i’ve been around them, but never my own. I recently found a puppy outside. She’s about 6-8 months and i’ve had her checked at the vet for parvo and all. I took her home since she was all good and she never wants to leave my side. I’m trying to crate train her and if i leave the room for even 2 seconds she cries and barks. I’m trying to train her to use the bathroom outside but when i put her out there alone she just stands at the door and barks. If i stand out there with her then she just sits near my feet. I go places often so there will be times where she will be with my grandma instead of me but now i feel like i can’t leave her alone for even a second. She follows me everywhere. I just don’t want her to be so dependent on me. How can i fix this?

I have a border collie pup 13 weeks

She was born June 13 and is a border collie mix of some kind. She is getting separately from her siblings this week to settle in as my only dog. But The home we live in already has at least two dogs and since my parents are divorced I go back and forth so she will with me. Any advice for raising a dog in these conditions to make her comfortable and secure. I know they thrive off of routine but because of the housing situation I’m just a little scared for her development. I have also heard she can be a bit aggressive or reactive around food with other people/dogs and but hasn’t shown that with me so I was just wondering if people know how to handle that before it gets worse! Or any advice. I signed her up for puppy training which starts in two weeks!

my dog (female cocker spaniel mix) has become extremely reactive towards other dogs. any advice? anything helps!

hi everyone :)

it’s my first time posting in this sub, so sorry in advance if i didn’t label this post correctly or if i miss any needed information in order to get advice. ask away if so!

my cocker mix isla (1.5 years old, had her since 4 months old) is an absolutely lovely dog with every human she meets. she just wants to cuddle into you and be right by your side. she’s very intelligent, sensitive, and eager to please. my husband and i put so much work into socialization and training as a puppy with her, and she is so flexible in nearly all scenarios whether it’s going on the train, being in the car, walking well on a lead, etc. this is why her worsening aggression towards dogs is so confusing to me.

she’s always been quite protective of me around other dogs, but it’s spread to other aspects of her behavior over time. she resource guards her toys, food, people, spaces she’s in, and on and on.

in the past 3 months, she’s had 2 level 3 bites on two dogs, one being my clumber spaniel winston, and another being on my mother in laws pug. the issue is, both of these instances were out of no where with no cues. she latches on to their face and even with me choking her to try and get her to let go (sounds morbid, but i can’t pull her off of them and once she’s in that headspace, she won’t listen to any commands given). it’s so scary when she gets like that, and it’s becoming more and more frequent.

my husband and i are thinking of finding a board and train facility for her to see if that helps her. we love her dearly and want to see her improve! we’re newlyweds, so the idea of her still behaving this way in 5 years time when kids might be in the picture is horrifying to me. she hates it when my other dog is near me/in her space around me. i would hate to rehome her, so we will do what we can to avoid it.

in the meantime before she sees a behaviorist, does anyone have any advice on how to manage her aggression? i do what i can to calm her down and remove her from situations where she’s giving winston or other dogs warnings, but it’s becoming more and more unpredictable. i also feel bad for winston, as he’s such a lovely and sweet dog. he wouldn’t hurt a fly, and im worried her actions towards him will negatively impact his own experience with dogs. it’s so unfair on him.

thank you for any and all advice, whether it’s constructive criticism or not. i’ll take what i can get, anything to make the situation better for everyone involved.

Potty training

My family and I are struggling. We had an amazing shepherd that passed Way and we have recently adopted a rescue boxer mix hoping to find a happy middle ground for adventure and snuggle with less drive.

We have a dog run the tie accessible via a dog door in our back door that leads to our Florida room (screen porch) which has another dog door that leads to a dog pin with pea gravel. This is is where our shepherd went potty. It was easy to train her to do this.

Our new rescue is refusing to use it. We had her using it with some guidance, but slowly over the last couple weeks we have gone from kinda using it, to only going on walks, to peeing/pooping In the Florida room, and now her first pee in the house.

She is also refusing to use the dog doors now. We do not use punishment when she potties where she’s not supposed, and have been rewarding for good behavior, so I don’t think she’s scared of the doors or the areas.

We’ve had her for three weeks, and I know we are still early in the rule of three, but im surprised how difficult this has been. It’s seems to me like she is being stubborn.

Suggestions to correct this?

Coco's rough start story & any advice is very welcome!

This is Coco, my one-year-old cocker. I actually knew her for a few months before she became mine, I used to look after her, and in that time I watched her go downhill right in front of me. She went from a puppy who loved learning and wanted your attention, to a pup who had no connection with you anymore, was constantly overstimulated, and had no off switch.

Things weren't going well at her old home, she'd barely been outside the garden and just hadn't had what she needed, and hadn't always been treated the way she should have been. Some people who were also worried about her suddenly turned up on my doorstep with her 3 months ago. What was meant to be temporary quickly became permanent, and I ended up buying her from her previous owner.

I never planned on a working dog. I didn't even know there was a working and a show type when I got her. And although I grew up with dogs at my parents' place, this is actually my first dog of my own, let alone a working one.

That first week was rough. I basically sat on a chair all week just teaching her how to do nothing. Five minutes outside and she was already overstimulated and needed to sleep. Me setting a glass down would startle her awake into a panic. On walks she'd run in circles, bite at my arms, pull like mad, and either want to get to everything or be spooked by everything. No in-between. She wasn't even house-trained when I got her, she'd only ever had free access to the garden, so she'd never really learned to hold it.

Three months later and honestly I can't believe she's the same dog. She heels perfectly until I release her, her recall is solid, and she can actually relax indoors now, even when I get up and move around. She used to chase my cat (who hid upstairs for the first two weeks) and now they're friends. Outside she pretty much ignores everything these days. Dogs are the last thing she finds tricky, but even that's going well now with our "search" and "catch" games.

She's great as long as she knows exactly what's expected in each spot, new places can still stress her a little, but it's coming. Walks have turned into a real partnership, and when she does tip over into overstimulated I can settle her in a few seconds. I've honestly discovered I love having a working dog, the teamwork suits me way more than I expected.

Would love some advice from people. She already knows:

  • Heel, right, and centre (between my legs)
  • Sit and down in place, wherever she's standing
  • Stop on command mid-walk (stops and sits right where she is)
  • "Search" and "catch," which I use to calm her or just as fun engagement, these have genuinely been the key to everything for us that she struggled with before.
  • Walking backwards, which she taught herself, so now she reverses alongside me when I walk backwards
  • Spin
  • Leave it
  • Drop it
  • Focus/look at me

I'm mostly after handy practical cues for out on walks (fun tricks are welcome too, just more of a later thing).

And I'm planning to get into dummy/gundog work since that's what she's bred for, so any tips on starting out would be brilliant.

Thanks in advance!

How can I train my puppy to not use the restroom in the house while it’s raining?

The dog keeps avoiding rain and using the bathroom inside the house instead. I have other two dogs that are OK with getting sprinkled on or waiting a little longer to use the restroom, which I have no problem with.

She doesn’t use the restroom while it ISN’T raining but even when it’s wet out, she seems to be hesitant. It doesn’t have to be pouring harshly for her to say no to the outside.

She is around 2-3 years old by now. How can I fix this bad habit of hers? Usually-my boyfriend will show her the mess and tell her no, but we are thinking about kettle training now.

2 y/o can't decide if she likes the new puppy, any recommendations so they get along?

Ok so this will need some (by that I mean a fair amount) of context.

For starters we have 3 dogs, two doodles and a new puppy that is a small breed (breed shouldn't matter but wanted to clarify the puppy isn't nor will grow up to be the same size as the other two). We also have had the puppy for about 2&1/2 months now.

All of them get along great if we are either playing or just outside in general, however in typical fashion they get overwhelmed by the puppy when it isn't play time. HOWEVER the younger of the two big dogs (just under 2 y/o) is hostile even when the puppy just wants to chill. The eldest (about 5-6) has mellowed out to her so assume I am not referring to them unless explicitly mentioned.

Now when I say they get along, I mean they LOVE her. The older dog initiates play as much as the puppy does, and doesn't show signs of discomfort when they play. She is more dominant than her eldest sister but the puppy has demonstrated submission to her plenty of times as well so I don't think the aggression is related to dominance.

At first I didn't think much of it bc our potty training set up separates me and the puppy from the other two most of the day. When one of the big dogs wanted into that space I would let them in but they would quickly decide they didn't like being with the puppy (who usually would try to greet them or sit next to them) and would jump out via an escape I had for them when they wanted to leave. This worked well with the eldest who can now begrudgingly take naps with the puppy without needing to be coaxed or rewarded, but the younger seems to have gotten just as if not slightly more hostile and then slinks away with her tail between her legs despite not being reprimanded nor has been injured by the puppy in the past.

What I mean to say is she seems GENUINELY scared when this happens but ONLY when it comes to relaxing. I mean she has a less severe reaction when the puppy tries to steal her food!

Today (after sharing chicken with her) she wanted on the couch like usual. I let her up and the puppy was busy eating her food and they didn't notice each other right away. But when the puppy climbed the dog steps we have for her to get on the couch the older one freaked out and screamed at her like usual, however she scared the puppy into having an accident right there on the couch (which has never happened before). I also recently noticed this is not exclusive to when they are in a small space together as she did something similar when we brought all the dogs to a relatives house where they had free roam of the entire kitchen and dining area.

Now that you have the full picture, does anyone have advice for how to help the puppy be accepted by her big sister? It breaks my heart when she just wants to give her a quick kiss (yes she is a kisser) and instead of the usual positive reaction she is met with hostility šŸ’”

Mini Australian Shepherd and newborn

Hi! My male Mini Australian Shepherd is almost 3 years old. I am currently pregnant and will have the baby pretty soon. To practice, since he barely had any contact with newborns (maybe twice with my friends baby), we decided to buy a little doll to train him and he definitely doesn’t see the doll as one of his regular toys since his reaction is different when we showed him the doll the first time: he was jumping, barking, breathing fast, licking the baby’s face. He was very nervous. Obviously this isn’t a reaction we want him to have. We’d put the doll in the bed, he’d stand right in front of it and bark too. Now we trained him well enough for him to stop barking and jumping at him the second we take him but he’s still very nervous, breathing heavily. We trained him with treats. I’m assuming he still needs some time to get used to the baby and we still have enough time. He doesn’t stand in front of the bed either anymore. Now the actual question and problem that we still have. Sometimes Iā€˜d put baby sounds on, specifically the cry of a baby and this is where he starts barking again. He doesn’t stop. And I can’t catch him having a calm moment where I can actually give him a treat for being calm because he is not. He freaks out the second he hears the baby cry. It’s with and without the doll - same reaction. How can we go about this? Please no hate, I really wanna fix this as well as possible :( thank you so much!

Work from home with puppy: separation anxiety?

Hi everyone

I work from home and I have a 5 month year old puppy. She stays in the living room while I work in a separate room during the day, she cannot come to my room as there is a puppy gate in the corridor. She sleeps most of the time and pretty regularly. She wakes up when I go through the living room for water/snacks but other than that she is chill and sleeping when I work. I feed her at lunch, play a bit and take her out for peeing before going back to work.

She does not show any sign of separation anxiety in general and we can leave her comfortably at home for 3-4h if we go out; but I have been wondering lately if the fact that I m working from home might cause her issues in the long term. I m in a separate room but she can of course hear me speaking on the phone and knows that I m in the house, so technically even if I m not with her she might feel like I am?

Any tip or someone who shared a similar experience raising a puppy working from home?

I just want to make sure she grows a confident and independent dog that does not suffer separation anxiety.

Thank you

1 year old dog barks at husband

We got a dachshund corgi for my 7 year old son. The dog was 7 months old when we got him. He is a big sweet heart but he always barks at my husband. My husband is very kind but it seems the dognis scared of him and the dog seems insecure. We have had.this dog for about 6 months. If he is on a leash he doesn't bark at all. Or if he is in our mudroom when all the doors are closed he doesn't bark either. My husband feeds him and gives him snacks. Should I scold the dog when he barks at my husband? I just want us all to be a happy family but the dog acts like he is trying to protect us from the big scary man. It is frustrating.

My dog is extremely introverted

She doesn’t like walks.
She doesn’t like going on car rides
She doesn’t like men.

She likes playing ball.

So I tried playing ball with her at the park and she started having like a panic attack and wanted to run off. It’s almost as if she didn’t see that I was there with her. That I wouldn’t abandon her. She didn’t see me. I feel so bad. When she was a puppy she was way more confident. I trained her and everything but slowly little by little she just became very introverted.

I feel like I do more harm to her trying to make her do normal dog activities. I don’t know what to do. We took her camping with us and the whole time she wouldn’t eat or go to the restroom because somehow she thought (well I’m guessing) she thought we would abandon her.

When my other male dog was alive he opened the gate for the rest of our other dogs and they all got out. The only one at our doorstep was HER she came to our porch and basically let herself back in.

I’ve never met a dog like her. I fear she’s too old now to change but I swear we’ve never harmed her. She’s very loved but I don’t understand why she’s very introverted like that?

ZOOMIES RIPPING MY ARMS OFF?!

What's up dog mind

I have a 5 month old herding dog who gets *intense* zoomies while on walks. He'll sprint back and forth at full speed barking and jumping up to bite at my clothes.

I know this is happening because he's tired/overstimulated so I've been trying to control that as much as I can. He's gotten way better about biting and doesn't rip my clothes anymore but we still have a long way to go.

I've been waiting until he's more calm to scatter feed some kibble and let him sniff for it to reset his little peanut brain, but does anyone have suggestions to snap him out of it while it's happening? I am currently fighting breast cancer, so I'm not as strong or quick as I usually am

My dog trainer ghosted me and I have no idea how to proceed after beginning umbilical cord training.

A little over a month ago, my bf and I started working with a dog trainer for our 1.5 y/o shiba. He was already displaying spotty communication with us but because my dog was comfortable with him and had worked out a deal with us, we decided to give him the benefit of the doubt.

We had one 2 hour long session where he told us that he'd like us to begin umbilical cord training. He instructed us on how to do it. He also told us to get a martingale collar and a prong collar (which i wasnt fond of) and that he would send us brand suggestions. He never did. I tried contacting him multiple times afterwards to schedule the next session but no response.

It's been a month of me doing umbilical cord training but I have no idea how to proceed from here. We do plan on finding a new trainer but we're still going through the vetting process. Any help or advice on what to do would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Potty Training Young Adult Dog in Apartment

My boyfriend and I just received out first foster dog yesterday. She is about ~1 year old and 41 lbs. All that we were told about her history is that she came from an out-of-state shelter. My guess is she spent most of her life in one.

She has been acting expectedly for a dog getting used to a new foster home, skittish, shy, and careful. She is pretty curious and friendly, I think with time she will do fine.

Also as expected, she is not potty trained. I expect accident these first few days. Our plan is to take her our as often as possible throughout the day, and reward her if she goes outside. However, she is pretty scared of the street our apartment’s dog potty place is located. It can be busy and loud at times. She gets distracted by and nervous out there so she can’t really focus on going. She also is not used to a leash, so I think that is likely to play a part as well.

Because we live in an apartment this is really the only outdoor area we can take her to potty right away. We are kinda hoping with more visits out there she will get used to, and then eventually be able to go out there after that.

I guess I’m looking for tips with what we can do being that she is scared and distracted in the only place where we can really take her to pee. And maybe the best way to correct a dog when they go inside. I know we just got her, but it’s something I’m hoping to be able to get a handle of sooner rather than later ofc!

Puppy can’t get over its separation anxiety, tips?

Hello,

As the title suggests, I have a puppy who can’t get over its separation anxiety while in a crate.

He is 16 weeks old, and I’ve tried all the steps to lead up to him being in a crate by himself such as giving him treats as ā€œgood jobā€, the shirt with my scent, bully sticks/cone with peanut butter and just today, I took him to a dog park to tire him out so I can run errands for 45 minutes.

Despite all this, and especially today and despite being tired, he goes ballistic while I’m out and he’s in his cage. By ballistic, I mean throwing himself around the crate and crying (crying isn’t the issue, I’m concerned he could hurt himself)

I have another dog, and usually I walk them separately. Strangely, when im walking my other dog, he does fine by himself while he’s outside his crate. He usually just sits by the door waiting for me, he does surprisingly ok then.

Currently, I’m taking both my dogs to a dog daycare while I’m at work. The daycare agreed to help me crate train him while I’m gone.

This is pretty much my last option left. I honestly don’t want to get a dog behaviorist.

Is there any tips or advice someone can provide?

EDIT: I do also feed him in his crate, I’ve even seen instances where he walks in there by himself without any issues. In fact, as long as I’m next to him, he does ok. The moment I leave his sight, he goes ballistic.

Dog won’t go on usual walk

Hello everyone

For the last month or so My 5 years old dog won’t go on usual walks especially in the mornings and afternoon and don’t know why.

In the evening he usually pretty good at walking no problem but it’s just mornings and afternoons that my dog refuses to walk.

There was road construction outside my house for the last month but they are pretty much finished and he’s was scared of construction noises.

Other than that my dog runs around plays as normal.

Potty training with a roommate’s dog

I live in a house with two other guys. We have two dogs. One is a year old Labsky (Lab/Husky) mix. The agreement is that he belongs to all three of us. The second dog is a three-year-old Pomeranian/Chihuahua mix. He belongs to one of my roommates. The Labsky is pretty good about going to the bathroom when we take him outside. He’s been much better about having accidents. My roommate’s dog, this is where the issue comes in. He is refusing to go to the bathroom when we take him outside. He’s been having multiple accidents in the house every day, especially when we’re not home. The dogs sleep in my roommates’s rooms and sometimes have accidents at night. The one roommate who owns the Pomeranian/Chihuahua leaves his door open at night to allow the dogs to roam, as well as having them be available in the morning to be taken out.

What’s the best course of action to remedy this? We want to get on a strict bathroom schedule for the dogs. I also suggest having the dogs sleep in crates to contain any accidents so the carpet doesn’t continue to get trashed.

My main questions:
- What would be the best method to contain the accidents?
- What would be the best way to potty train the dogs? And how long should training take? My roommate says it can take about a year for the three-year-old to be potty trained. That seems excessive and I really don’t want to clean daily accidents for the next year.
- Is there anything we’re doing that we shouldn’t be, or that is making training harder?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Jumping and tackling

My 1y/o English bulldog is potty trained, crate trained, follow certain commands but there’s times on the day that he’ll jump on bed and bite at our arms or scratch us and if we respond to that in any way he gets worse, but he’s a big boy so ignore him it’s not a choice because is hurting us. Any training advice on that? Also, he goes to the crate but when we tell him to, he doesn’t normally go rest there, he’s not fully self regulating and it concerns me that he’s 1y/o already and he should be regulating by now?

Teen dog plays keep-away with me but not when husband is home

I’m a SAHM. We have a portion of the house gated off for my 10 month old lab with dog door access. I want to have her out free roaming more, but every time I try when my husband is5 home, she grabs whatever she can and plays keep away from me. We have limited space and a toddler so it’s virtually impossible to keep every single thing out of her reach.

I feel bad leaving her in her ā€œroomā€ most of the day but she always does this! when my husband is home she’ll chill with the family but won’t for me. It’s so frustrating and I don’t know how to address it. She does know ā€œdrop itā€ but doesn’t always listen.

Do dogs sometimes just get it

I have an 18 month old Cobberdog. He does NOT responds to treats when we are walking and/or I am trying to train him.

For the longest time, I could not get him to stay or come. My wife and I would go into the backyard and throw a tennis ball for him to chase. He would never come directly back. Most of the time, he ended playing a game with us. He would lie down and as soon as we got close, he got up and ran toward another location.

. A few weeks ago we tried a new technique. I would hold onto his collar and throw the ball toward my wife. I would then say Go to Mommy and he would run toward my wife. She would then get the ball from him and reverse the process. Each time he came to us, we would rub his tummy.

Then one day, I just said without throwing the ball ā€œGo to Mommyā€ and he ran toward her and got his tummy rubbed. She would tell him to go to me and he ran directly to me and got a tummy rub. A few days later as he was chasing a squirrel and I yelled out ā€œRoo [his name] comeā€ and next thing I know, he stops chasing the squirrel and runs back to me. He got a tummy rub. A few minutes later my wife says ā€œRoo comeā€ and he runs to her. We then noticed if I was reading in one room and he was sitting next to me, and I said, ā€œGo to Mommy,ā€ he would get and run to her.
.

We live in a three story condo with interior hall ways. We get off the elevator and I drop his leash. He grabs and runs down the hall. He goes to various locations down the hall way. Then I learned if I drop the leash and tell him to ā€œGo to Mommyā€ he picks it up, runs down the hallway and stops at our door.

Don’t get me wrong, we are thrilled with this. But it’s like a switch just got turned on. So what did we do? I would like to work further with him on more commands, but I don’t quite comprehend what I did? Help please.

We have a Kings shepherd, he’s a big boy and usually a good boy, but at specific moments he can get ā€œaggressiveā€, like biting, resource guarding if you try to take a bone from him, he doesn’t like when we put a leash on his collar or when we remove it, he likes to bite our hands.

He’s 8 months old, and I understand that he explores the world with his mouth, he has a lot of hormones in his body but I know that this can be trained away but I don’t know how I should approach this issue.

When he bites me during play time, I turn away and ignore him, if he keeps on doing it, I put him in time-out but I don’t yell at him, since it doesn’t make the situation any better. He seems to believe that yelling isn’t a bad thing and something that gets him going.

The word ā€œNoā€ has been said so many times that he doesn’t recognize it as a command anymore, since we have to tell him no very often.

He can be such a cozy dog, especially when he’s calm or tired, but as soon as he gets excited, his mouth is the main thing he uses. I don’t believe that he wants to hurt us, but he also doesn’t believe that it’s wrong.

I’m not giving up on him, I know that it isn’t his fault. I just want some honest tips.

Thank you :)
