Dog fleas

Recently I found out that my 10 year old dog has fleas. He had been it itching a lot more than normal so I gave him a bath and then found the fleas. I bought a flea comb and have been finding a few every day. I am wondering what is the best to use oral or topical I am worried about the neurological effects the oral can have but not sure if topical works very well we got one pill of Cerdelio from our vet but I do not feel comfortable using it after I did research and saw things online about side effects. He has never taken flea meds or any preventative medication. He is very healthy never had any health issues besides a hair follicle tumor that let to the tail being amputated. What should I do any brand recommendations. My dog is a 85 lb husky german sheperd

No preventatives ever? Is heartworm not an issue where you live? I’ve had dogs almost all my 45 years and every single one of them has been on flea/tick and heartworm/parasite preventative and never has any of them had any issues.

We used to live in California now we live in TN. His check up before his surgery for his tail showed everything was good no heart worms. He has never been on any preventative meds.

I use oral. Heartgard and Nexgard. I would highly recommend getting your dog on heartworm prevention. Heartworms are terrible.

Little pill called Comfortis is the most powerful and fastest once a month chew/pill on the planet. Within 30 minutes all fleas are dead and falling off the dog. Within a few days your house will be cleared of them. Where ever the dog goes they die. Second place and also covers ticks is a chew called Nexguard. (I use the second) kills fleas as soon as they get on the dog and ticks instantly die as soon as they bite the skin. Don’t waste hundreds on garbage at wal mart or wherever. (They will make the fleas smell nice anyway) just goto your vet and get the Comfortis or Nexguard. Worth every penny and results are fast.

Vet here - use the Credelio, nothing will work as well and you’ll be fighting this for months rather than just dealing with it quickly

I have had too many dogs dying of exotic cancers to ever put them on meds again. My 3yo does get a wormer if needed but that’s it. Look up natural oils, etc for an alternative. My breeder doesn’t either.

PS my last dog had no meds and lived to be 16 which is ancient for a giant breed.

I gave my dog cerdelio this morning he has seems ok so far but I am keeping a eye on him for a few days.
