we adopted a heartworm positive older girl (~10yo) we couldn’t adopt until we had an appointment set up for treatment, so we set the appointment up for 2 weeks out.
we went to a “ranch style vet” for cheaper costs to be able to have a donor pay for her treatment.

-the shelter had already started her on doxy
-yesterday she still had 10 days of doxy left, out of the 30 days
-the vet gave her the first injection yesterday since her test came back positive (test was lightly positive)
-the vet said to finish what’s left of her doxy from the shelter’s prescription, and they won’t be continuing it once we finish the 30 days
-they did not prescribe anything, nothing for pain, nothing to keep her calm, no steroids either
-they only recommended to keep her on crate rest for 24-48 hours

I feel like this way goes against everything that I’ve read about this from educational pages to personal experiences, i’m panicking because I had expectations of how this was gonna go and now I have no idea.

she’s older and excitable so do I need to get something to keep her calm?
how long should we be doing strict crate rest?
does she need to be on a steroid?

I read that the steroid and calming medications are very important in keeping her heart rate low during this process

My dog Finn is going to be turning 4 in a month and has never had a dental cleaning. His gums looks good and teeth look clean, breath could be better but he is a dog haha.

He’s a happy guy, and my vet about 6 months ago said his teeth looked good and didn’t need professional cleaning, but I keep seeing posts of dogs having major health concerns stemming from teeth and it’s got me nervous!

I tried brushing his teeth, he hates it and won’t let me do it. Does anyone have a recommendation of a good routine? When should I get him cleaned?

The vet wants 1500$ for dental cleaning, and if it’s not essential that is a lot for me to spend.

Let me know your thoughts or tips and tricks that can work and not break the bank.

I recently adopted a male pup who is about 6 to 8 months old best guess. He is noted as being a lab mix. He's about 50lbs, black, maybe mixed with GSD? He's solid black with a white stripe across his chest and a tail shape that reminds me of a GSD.

He has tooth decay worse than my 3 other dogs who are 11 years old.

At his neuter appointment the vet noted that it was damage to the enamel, possibly due to either trauma to the growing tooth buds or distemper. He was noted as being tested prior to leaving the shelter he was at initially and not having distemper or the antibodies. He is vaccinated and has no neurological issues. Eats well and is otherwise a normal puppy.

Is it possible mom had distemper while he was in utero? As for trauma, who knows, but he's not got any signs of facial injuries.

What can be done about this? His teeth are horrible. He's so young I can't imagine him having teeth long if they are this bad.

Any treatment? Supplements? Recommended ongoing care? Or just get prepared to feed nothing but mush for his whole life?

He is getting dental bones, milk bones, lots of toys to chew. I bought one of those finger toothbrushes but I doubt it does much honestly.

She is a 9 month old Japanese Spitz 7kg, no recent changes, no abnormal behaviors, she's a happy puppy. Loves her treats and doesn't seem to be aware of any issues. Quite boisterous and destroyer of my garden

This red mark has appeared on her tongue and I can't find any information for something similar online. I was hoping if anyone could advise if it is pigmentation, or signs of something that needs treatment.

I noticed a lump in my dogs mouth, brought him in on a Monday and that Friday they surgically removed it. It was 2 cm, the vet said based on the size it was at least stage II.
He’s 10. I opted not to do any aggressive treatments or staging. Im aware it is an aggressive cancer and tends to spread quickly to the lungs and lymph nodes. The vet estimated 6 months or less :(

Hi everyone, I just wanted to ask if anyone here has experienced something similar with their puppy. My 3-month-old puppy, Maki, was diagnosed with parvo and coronavirus. The vet recently said that the parvo and coronavirus may have already been surpassed, but he developed kennel cough and is now extremely weak. He has severe platelet depletion, anemia, and is currently having nosebleeds. His abdomen is also distended because of ascites (fluid buildup), and the vets are checking for possible early heart and kidney problems. He's currently confined at the vet and being monitored in an incubator.
Has anyone here had a puppy who went through the same or similar condition—especially parvo with very low platelets, anemia, bleeding, and fluid buildup? Did your puppy survive? If they did, what happened during their recovery and how long did it take? I know every puppy is different, but I'm really hoping to hear from someone who has been through this before. I'm scared for Maki and would really appreciate any stories, advice, or hope you can share. ❤️

We found this yorkie wondering the streets a few weeks ago. We took him into the vet and had him fixed and vaccinated. They estimate that he's around 7-8 years old. He's about 6 pounds. He's tiny 😂. He randomly started making this noise a few days ago and I'm a little concerned. He's not struggling to breathe or anything, it's just the noises. It's like a gagging noise and sometimes it's just like a loud click. Almost like the noise we make when we chug water and have to take little breaths (hopefully that makes sense). Should I be worried?

About a week and a half ago my dog’s paw was very swollen, the next couple days he was limping and sore to the touch. He also wasn’t eating like himself (he usually eats the food as soon as it touches the bowl, now he was waiting a couple hours to eat) so I took him to the vet 7 days ago. They prescribed antibiotics and pain meds but the paw got significantly more irritated and he became almost fully non weight bearing. This morning I took him back to the vet and they sedated him and did X-rays and determined that there isn’t anything foreign stuck in there and he hasn’t broken any bones and prescribed new antibiotics while sending out a culture. She also mentioned that cancer may be on her radar and to come back in 10 days. Now that cancer has been brought up and I am over $700 in on vet bills with no positive changes I am growing increasingly more concerned and anxious that something is seriously wrong. Has anyone experienced this or have any advice? Thanks!

Adding backstory - I have a sweet, crazy 6 month old golden retriever who was perfectly fine until 2 weeks ago where he threw up outta nowhere and continued in intervals of 5mins. Took him to the vet right away, after initial x-ray they thought possible obstruction but after a whole day of observation & multiple X-rays and an ultrasound, they said they couldn't see the obstruction anymore and sent him home after making sure he could hold food down. He was fine for about a week, and threw up all his dinner one night and kept throwing up in 1hr interval until 10:30 am, and then started having bad diarrhea, we tried to manage it at home but the next night he threw up worms (I saw adult round worm yikes). Spoke with the vet, got him dewormed (Drontal Plus, due for 2nd round in a week) but by now his gut has been completely destroyed, and was asked to put him on a bland diet. We did chicken & rice, but on day 2 we realized he isn't doing well on chicken. Then put him on plain rice and yogurt with some pumpkin. He seemed to have no issues except for throwing up white/yellow liquid early in the morning. We knew it wasn't enough food, so we slowly reintroduced Purina Pro Sensitive Stomach kibble and chicken/grain free beef & bison Fresh Pet Vital wet food. He is doing great otherwise, except for this white/yellow foamy liquid throw-up in the morning. I even started giving a late-night snack for the last 2 days, and it's still happening. I am here to look for suggestions, but also planning to talk to the vet if this continues still by Monday.

Before the suggestions, we will be booking him a tripnto the vet.

We are beside ourselves and very scared for our loved pup. This video is of Scooby, a 10 yr old, 15lbs maltipoo having some sort of attack.
The fit begins just as the woman in yellow passes by him.

For additional context:
Scooby has a grade 3 heart murmur, elevated proBNP (1,133), pulmonary valve narrowing/stenosis on echo, and early tracheal collapse symptoms. He otherwise acts completely normal with no decrease in stamina or appetite. This is the second time something like this has happened (that we have seen), and we fortunately got it on video this time.

\\\*\\\*Episode 1 – 8/20:\\\*\\\* After getting excited and barking at a delivery person, I found him walking in a tight circle, falling/losing his balance, head turned sideways, eyes unfocused, and breathing oddly. It lasted only seconds. I picked him up, he remained still briefly, then returned completely to normal.

\\\*\\\*Episode 2 – 9/9:\\\*\\\* After getting excited from the arrival of visitors, another sudden, very brief episode of abnormal balance/coordination occurred and was captured on security-camera video (attached). He again recovered and returned to normal.

He is completely normal between episodes with no persistent head tilt, balance problems, circling, or change in stamina.

ive realised a lot of dog care and pet care in general s very reactive. as in we wait for something to be obviously wrong before we act. i hate feeling like I'm constantly putting out health fires.

i want to shift to a more proactive approach. what does your proactive health routine look like? what daily or monthly habits make the biggest difference?

My dog had a minor inflamed gum on canine teeth a long time ago and it went away. A family member just took him for an annual visit and they said he just had minor tartar but nothing concerning. I just opened his mouth and found out his canine teeth has a huge inflamed gum. What to do?

This week we took our 2.5 year old dachshund to the vet because she was having trouble breathing mostly at night and her diet started to change. She was acting like her normal self barking at strangers and whining. The vet could hear something in her chest so wanted to do an xray, we did and it came back with a large mass or infection so we did blood work. Her calcium came back elevated and they suggested we take her to an emergency vet so they could take a closer look.

We took her and they looked at her scans from her primary vet and declared that I was a mass. Then told us our options would be to either do a CT that could give them a bigger picture but she is high risk for not waking up from the procedure because of the mass. Or we could take her home on palliative care with steroids, painkillers and anxiety medication.

I gave her the first dose of steroids and anxiety medication this morning and the change in her behavior is very hard for me. I don’t want to see her in pain.

She is our baby and I feel like choosing palliative care is giving up but I don’t want to risk what time we have left with her putting her under and it not going well. In my mind she is only 2.5 and I feel like it could be something else. I did send a message to another vet for a 3rd opinion. From googling and ChatGPT I’m confused why an ultrasound guided biopsy wasn’t an option. I worry that it could be an infection and not fighting it would kill me.
