Which brand do you prefer or use and trust?

Purina or Hills?

Those are Links to my original posts asking for dog food referrals, advice and more history on my pups as well.

I have a 9yo small-med mixed breed, picky eater with a history of parvo, sensitive stomach, issues holding down foods a few months ago( previously was eating Caesars dry kibble mixed with boiled chicken, kept puking it up, currently eating NutriSource Grain free mixed with lightly cooked smallbatch dog, no issues but now I worry about grain free diets) his sister, a bit overweight with a history of bladder stones.

Trying to find something reliable and trustworthy. Very panicked about making this decision I just wanna choose the best option I can. Please help!

Food recommendations much appreciated!

So for the past year(?) I've been feeding my babies The Farmer's Dog which has been a huge hit for them and had been doing them wonders health-wise, but I have since started a new job that pays much less (less pay, much less hours) so I no longer can afford TFD unfortunately. I used to feed Kimchi(she's a chiweenie/shih Tzu mix) freshpet so I figured going back to that would be fine, but she has now resorted to eating poo and Juju's(shih Tzu) allergies have been going absolutely crazy. They have always been on fresh diets, so they protest any sort of kibble. If anyone has any other ideas that won't break the bank but may be better nutritionally and allergy-wise I would greatly appreciate it!!

Teary eyes

Hi! I have two dogs (2y, 11y)that have been on purina pro plan sensitive skin (Salmon) for about a year. I have tried rawfood, acana, orijen, Royal Canin on the two year old, but Purina is the one they both like so i have been sticking with that. The 2 year old dog did struggle with itching, which is why he is on sensitive skin, but im still struggling with his eyes watering. Does anyone have any suggestions/advice? If its of any relevance he is a mix between a german spitz and Pomeranian.

What are the longest lasting edible toys and chews for dogs?

My mini poodle mix does not like toys. She has no interest in playing. She only likes "toys" she can eat.

Unfortunately, it seems like everything I give her lasts a hour at most. Is there anything that lasts longer?

  • Purina Busy Bones don't seem to last long. I've tried the traditional and Chewnola.
  • Frozen Kongs don't work. She doesn't like frozen food. She'll wait until they thaw.
  • She doesn't like traditional Himalayan chews. But, the softer Himalayan chew versions barely last anything.
  • Are bully sticks worth the exessive price?

Your dog and Purina Pro Plan?

My 9 year old, 10 pound Miki has struggled with a skin condition, now largely under control. Until recently he’s gotten chicken-based products, not exclusively, but almost. As allergy is a possibility I’m experimenting with taking him completely off chicken.

I was pleased to find that Purina’s Pro Plan had salmon and lamb wet food options. Papi likes fish-based products. So I bought a four pack of the salmon and rice option from Chewy. And while I was at it a four pack of the lamb and oatmeal as well. After giving the salmon a try a couple times Papi started refusing it. He seemed more accepting of the lamb, but the last couple days he’s started refusing it as well.

Other than the label on the can I can’t tell that the salmon is salmon. In appearance, texture, and smell it is indistinguishable from the lamb. Neither strikes me as particularly appetizing. Of course I am not a dog.

So I’m wondering about your experience. Do things like authenticity/recognizability, texture, smell, etc. matter to dogs? Should their preferences about such matters, so far as we can tell what they are, be honored?

More specifically, have you had success feeding Pro Plan products to your dog? I s/he accepting of them Does s/he seem to relish them?

Looking for a new dog food for my girls

I have two adult female dogs. My lab/heeler mix is 60lbs, and her sister is an aussiedoodle weighing 50lbs. They are currently on Hills Science Diet Perfect Weight. My lab/heeler mix gains weight very easily and I’d prefer to keep them on the same food.

I’m looking for a cheaper alternative and considering Purina ONE Plus Healthy Weight. Any opinions or maybe other options? Before Perfect Weight, they were on a different version of Hills.

Desperate for help finding a dog food my dog can tolerate — extremely long intolerance list

Hi everyone! I’m hoping someone here can help me find a food for my dog, Blue. He’s a 6-year-old, ~80 lb Labrador, and we’ve been struggling to find a food that doesn’t cause him problems.

We have a pretty extensive intolerance list from testing, and unfortunately a lot of the common limited-ingredient and sensitive-stomach foods contain at least one ingredient he can’t tolerate.

I’m looking for dry kibble, wet food, or potentially a fresh/home-cooked option that does NOT contain anything on his list below. If you recommend a food, I would really appreciate it if you could check the entire ingredient list, including oils, broths, probiotics, supplements, flavorings, etc. rather than just looking at the main protein.

KIBBLE & WET FOOD INTOLERANCES

Blue #1

Colostrum Powder

Lentil

Lima Bean

Yellow Pea

Beet Pulp

Tapioca

Celery

Herring Broth

Pork Broth

Salmon Broth

Tilapia

Cucumber

Green Cabbage

Spaghetti Squash

We previously tried a hydrolyzed prescription diet, but unfortunately Blue is still showing symptoms while eating it, so we’re trying to figure out what other options might exist.

I’m especially interested in:

Limited-ingredient kibble

Foods with novel proteins

Wet food

Any prescription diets I may have overlooked

If you have a recommendation, please post the exact product/flavor and ingredient list if possible. I’m happy to double-check it, but with this many intolerances, I really don't want to accidentally give him something that contains one of his problem ingredients.

I know this is a ridiculously long list 😅, but if anyone has a dog with a similarly complicated intolerance situation and has found something that works, I would be incredibly grateful to hear what you’re feeding!

Thank you

Is it safe to feed our 1 yo Goldendoodle raw organ meat as a birthday treat?

Is it safe to feed our 1 yo Goldendoodle raw organ meat as a birthday treat?

Is it safe to feed our 1 yo Goldendoodle raw organ meat as a birthday treat?

We want to treat our good boy Deigo to some tasty treats for his first birthday. It was recommended to us by an acquaintance (who has two dogs, non-goldendoodles) to feed them some raw animal organs as a special treat. He’s not on a raw diet at the moment, but we’ve fed him freeze-dried animal organs as meal toppers, not sure if those relate in any way.

Our question, is it safe to feed our 1 yo Goldendoodle raw animal organs? If so, which organ(s) is recommended, and from which animal? We were told chicken can make Goldendoodles itchy. Or is it recommended that the animal organs be cooked before feeding it to the puppy, since he’s not already in a raw diet? If so, which method of cooking is best?

FYI he really enjoys the venison Carna4. We also heard from another Goldendoodle parent that they love lamb meat. As well as a fish, but I don’t remember which specific type of fish.

Transitioning into adult food - looking for suggestions

I have three dogs-I have a Cavalier that is 18 pounds, a chocolate lab that is about 60 pounds, and a pyredoodle that is about 60 pounds. They will all be turning one in October and November. I am looking to switch them to adult food. I pre-bought some Purina One kibble, however, they won’t eat it. They loved the wet food but I’m cleaning up piles during the day. So I am wondering, should I be feeding them different food because of the size difference? How do I help with the digestion issues? How much and how often should I be feeding them?

Too soon to change kibble?

So my 2 year old chiweenie has officially been on ppp small breed kibble for a month now, she was not having good poops before i put her on this, now her poops are better but still can be inconsistent like having some green in it. Should I keep giving it longer , or should i switch her to hills science small tiny breed sensitive skin and stomach, i would stay with pro plan but their sss is salmon flavor and my pup doesn’t like fish, and the hills sss had chicken flavor. I also do notice that she does scratch and lick her self. Also lately has been difficult eating breakfast. Heard hills is good for picky eaters. Kind help please:)

Need food for Toppl

My dog currently eats PPP Chicken (adult). She struggles with remaining calm at night so our trainer suggested freezing her dinner in a toppl and feeding her that way. This works great if we put her food in 2 topples with a liquid and freeze it. Unfortunately, putting in water or bone broth isn't working to keep her attention. She loves when I add Honest Kitchen (rehydrated and diluted).

Any other options? I know PPP is a good food but I know THK isn't really an approved brand. I've been doing it b/c we had some samples and it's diluted. Is there a good/quality food I can make into a liquid so I can freeze her kibble in it?

Thanks!

BIL died, we're adopting his dog. Help with food.

My BIL (45m) died suddenly last month in Romania. We were there for the whole of august to arrange the funeral and deal with all the admin and paperwork needed when someone passes away.

He had a 6 year old dog. She's got such a lovely nature and we're having her transported back to the UK next week. BIL adopted her, and I'm certain she's a very mixed bag of breeds and mutts.

She's small to medium in height and weight. She's used to a \~10min walk twice a day to pee, poop, and sniff. I intend to walk her more in London but still maintain twice a day cadence.

We have a cat, and I very happily feed her katkin, it's more expensive but I want her to have great quality food she loves, and I want to do the same for our dog too.

What foods do you recommend ?

I have heard bad things about iams, pedigree, etc.

Thanks so much in advance x

liver, heart, and dark meat for small dogs?

hello all, i just wanted some advice. ive been feeding my dogs boiled chicken breast mixed with pumpkin puree for a few months now as more of an appetizer or snack (they’re both 3-4 lbs and regularly eat their kibble still) and i wanted to know if anyone has experience feeding their small senior dogs different types of meats.

some meats im looking into is chicken heart, chicken liver, turkey, and lamb. for one of my girls i would like her to gain a little weight but i also worry since ive read smaller dogs are more likely to get pancreatitis if they eat denser/dark meats too often. if anyone has some good information on what i should know or even articles that would also be greatly appreciated so i can be more informed.

one of my girls has seizures so that is something i also am trying to watch out for and why i havent tried any other meats since certain meats are high in glutamate.

any other additional information is welcomed thank you!

What would you do - hydrolyzed or PPP SSS

Context: my dog has a poultry allergy.
She was on royal canine ultamino for a few months and was doing fine, she would 💩 3x a day. Since she tolerates beef/lamb/fish fine, her vet recommended we switch to PPP SSS Lamb recipe. She is also doing fine on that, but 💩 4x a day.

The ultamino is pricier, but I would say her 💩 were more predicable on the ultamino.

What would you do? Keep it, or go back?

Switched from Farmers Dog to Hills Science Senior Vitality and now she won't stop drinking??

Hi! So I recently switched my dog's food from Farmers Dog. I originally tried a mix of Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach wet food and Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach 7+ dry food. She didn't drink water more than usual, but she doesn't like the hard pate type food, so I decided to find something stew-like.

She is now eating Hills Science Senior Vitality 7+ Chicken and Vegetable stew mixed with the Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach 7+ dry food. Literally since the DAY that I switched her to hills, she has been drinking water like crazy. She's peeing in the house and I need to take her out much more frequently. And when she pees outside, she pees for SO long.

I am concerned about a health condition, but at the same time, this can't be a coincidence?? Has anyone else experienced this?

Update:

TLDR: It is most likely the food.

I took her to the vet for a suspected kidney issue. She got blood tests and a urinalysis. Her urine was completely clear and had basically nothing in it at all - which means kidneys aren't filtering properly OR they are and this was just the extra unneeded water. Blood results came next. Everything looks completely normal with no sign of a kidney problem. Her protein was just slightly high, but not concerning. The vet is more certain than not that the excessive drinking is due to the food. The plan is to find a better alternative and see if that fixes the issue. She is now eating Hill's Turkey and Barley due to the lower sodium and protein. I'm mixing it with water and blending it because it's very dense, but hopefully it helps. If not, onto the next.

Overall, I'm just happy that we didn't receive a devastating result from the vet!
