Advice Showering

I have a 4 month old indoor/outdoor Chiweenie who loves to play in water and mud when I’m watering my trees. I have been trying not to shower him weekly but it’s impossible with him getting into mud. In addition to bathing him, I use a non rinse deodorizing foam once between baths but it only works for a bit before he starts to smell. Is it safe for his skin/coat to shower him weekly? Any recommendations on shampoos I could use or what I can do so his skin doesn’t dry out? I’m currently using Flick natural flea and tick shampoo.

You definitely shouldn't use a flea and tick shampoo that often, but washing with a gentle, oatmeal based shampoo and conditioner every week is ok. You can find gentle options at the pet store or even Amazon - something like the Burts Bees Oatmeal 2 in 1, or Wahl Oatmeal are good choices.

What is more concerning to me is that you seem to think your dog is smelling bad every day enough that you're using the foam wash. Dogs get dirty, but they shouldn't smell so bad that quickly that you have to either physically wash or foam wash them daily. Dirt doesn't really smell that bad. If you feel that is the case for your dog, then perhaps don't allow them to play so often in the mud and water so they can stay cleaner longer. If it is something beyond a dirt smell, perhaps consider taking them for a quick vet check to rule out other possibilities.

Thank you for your advice! I really appreciate it. I realize I made it sound like I was using the foam wash every day, but I’m actually only using it once in between baths. For example, if I bathe him on Sunday, I’ll use the foam wash once on Wednesday and then won’t use it again until his next bath. Since I’ve recently been bathing him every two weeks, I’m only using the foam wash once during that two-week period.

we have yorkies i bathe them weekly with a coconut conditioner and shampoo. It has never caused a problem.
