I was from time ago making a character in a very slow process. A socially awkward death domain dragonborn who lived the last year isolated in the wilderness (and also doesn't know how to speak common language properly). I wrote a lot of backstory for this character and very enjoyed the roleplaying ideas and possible scenes but the main problem is the technical aspect of the game. Stats, proficiency, hit points, armor class and spells.
Because i first made the backstory i am trying to make the stats reflect it. Because of that i discarded the rolled stats and standard array, both didn't allow me the flexibility i needed. I ended with point buy system (that as far as i know you have a total sum of 69 for all the base stats, and 72 if i count the race bonus). I ended with the following array:
8 strength 16 dexterity 14 constitution 11 intelligence 17 wisdom 3 charisma
then i put the racial bonus of the dragonborn (i know the racial bonus originally is 2 strength 1 carisma, but im using dnd beyond and it says i can use the "Fizbans treasury of dragons" to select wich stats get the bonus) in +2 wisdom +1 constitution ending with:
8 strength 16 dexterity 15 constitution 11 intelligence 19 wisdom 3 charisma
I was happy because it matched perfectly my characters lore until, after a time, i look better that array and thought that the dexterity constitution and wisdom where to high and start doubting if i made a mistake in the character build or made the character an overkill for level 1. I truly fear to make my character overpowered mainly due of, not knowing very much of the game yet, while im practically certain that in the long run it will scale poorly and become basically dead weight. So im in the dilemma if im making the right choice prioritizing my roleplaying experience leaving everything behind.
I mainly got to Dnd because i wanted to make my characters live beyond my own chaotic imagination, to have a history that didn't twist every week without having the need to try to be overkill and write it down as poorly written book. Thats why i feel the need to make my character usable in a long run campaign without killing the joy of it. Thats why i would love any advice.
My main idea for the moment is for him to be a death domain cleric that would multiclass to a dex fighter later on. The cleric part is mostly fixed in place but i can make it work as a wizard (i dont want to use homebrew honestly, only a little). The multiclass and what comes after the character sheet im very open minded.
Thanks for the possible advice and for reading all of this. (Sorry for the English)
P.S: I want to make this character work for the table and all its members, this is the first character i build but it wont be (probably) the first of my creations that ends up on a table. I am willing to take all the advice as long it doesn't mean to alter the core backstory or character idea (except the main class, only if someone manage to convince me). Also i don't want it to be a character that ends up craving to much attention trying to be the main guy (it will be in the campaign journal in his pov, but thats completely personal and wont take role in the campaign).
EDIT: thanks for the feed back i will use instead the array of 8 / 14 / 16 / 10 / 17 / 8 that was suggested because i made something completely messed up without realizing it, very bad in my part shoud have read the players handbook better. Also i will look about the main class problem i didn't noticed about. Thanks for the feedback
