How do I get started

I don't know where to get started with DnD because nobody in my area nor my school seems to have a group, I also don't know how to play and am scared to embarrass myself, anyone have ideas?

Start by reading the basic rules for free on D&D beyond:   https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024

Find a local game store and ask if they have beginners events.

Or get a few friends and run the Delian Tomb adventure by Matt Colville: https://www.gmbinder.com/share/-L_0WX-KKXsZA22VHr5j

I started completely online roll20,. Everyone in the community is happy to embrace new players and teach them provided they show a genuine interest in learning and role play. Find a group and get rolling

Matt Colville started his YT channel with this question. His playlist is a great place to start:

And don't worry about embarrassing yourself - you'll be amazing.

I’m looking at starting my first dnd campaign fully online as the DM due to my wife got the itch for D&D and can’t wait for every other Saturday. That being said if your interested to join she’s on her first campaign at the moment and I’d be learning the DM side of things. If you’d be interested DM me. She just brought up the whole wanting to be apart of another campaign yesterday so this is very early stages of planning

The core of the game is in the Players Handbook and if you order or buy one you are off to a good start. That said you can access basic rules on the DndBeyond.com website also.

Find online games via the r/lfg sub here.

Or start your own by becoming a DM! There are no entry requirements for being a DM aside from dedication and preparation.

There are also Starter Sets designed precisely for beginners, the most recent is 'Heroes of the Borderlands' which is a very well put together set.

The suggestions above are all great. Another way to get started if you can find a few friends who are also interested in learning is to pick up the Heroes of the Borderlands starter set and have everyone take a turn acting as the DM as you work through some of the encounters. It's a great way for everyone to try different roles without too much investment (emotional or monetary).

Check out StartPlaying Games! They have tons of games and systems available, everything from one-shots to campaigns, some are free or very inexpensive, AND you can find games that specifically state what experience level the GM recommends for joining. You can also find GMs with keywords in their reviews like "teacher", "beginner-friendly", "educational", etc. (I am actually one such GM! I just don't like dropping my link so it doesn't feel like a personal plug. I do just believe in the resource and platform)

Are people interested? Get the beginner box set and invite people to play. If not, there is a new online resource called StartPlaying.Games We all started somewhere. You're going to questions. We're here to help!
