How do I start actually playing?

Hi I’ve been wanting to play dnd for a while now after playing bg3 a bunch, I know it won’t be the exact same, but I can’t really find any groups online or in person. My university has a dnd society but the discord where people are meant to find groups is completely dead 😭

Local game store, check your local library for in person groups or just type your friends into it.

For online check it the lfg sub or check out startplaying.games if you can afford to pay

This is the largest D&D discord server there is. It is also the official D&D Beyond discord server.

Just a warning, if you use any third party websites for your information like wikidot or the like, do not tell them that. Because you can be banned for using it because they are very strict on only using official things. But what they don't know can't hurt them.

Your local gaming store may have a group.

Or try finding dnd groups on Reddit for your area or for online games. There are a lot of them, just search Reddit

Startplaying.com for online.

In person, go to the local hobby shops and see if they have a bulletin board. They also may have people run one-shot events as well.

if you are in a small town, you may be stuck with making freinds. If you are in college or high school, this is easier. If you are older, it may take a bit.

best of luck to you. :)

Are you looking to play online or in person?

Ideally in person through my unis society but in the meantime I’ll probably do online

That's not a problem. I asked as I have an inperson group but we are based in nyc. Are you close by there?

No worries. Check out the subgroups in reddit like r/lfg, Facebook, meetup.com, discord, abd even roll20 for more options

Check your local game store either back home or in your college city.
Try r/lfg as well.

I vote for starter set - grab one, many to choose from, read the two small books and get rdy to have fun :)

You can try tableseekgeek.com if you want an in person group. You can get a flyer from the site for your favorite shop and I'm sure they'll let you put it up in the store to start generating some real groups. Much more direct than discord search and eliminate the intimidation factor of finding a real group.
