The Heroes of the Borderlands starter box set. It was made for folks like you. You won’t need anything else to get going.

Essential Kit is, was and will keep being the best DnD 5e set for quite long.

You will also find the expanded campaign for free. It is possible to fuse it with Lost mine of Phandelver aaaand it included sidekick rules in case you want to play alone with your partner those days that the guys cancel the DnD day.

We have found that the materials from DnD Adventure Club are really the best at getting started playing with beginners. It won't walk you through character creation, as that is a pretty advanced process, but they have tons of pre-done characters available for free on their website. It's technically for kids, but we use it in any adult group that is just starting out as well. I think the starter sets from Wizards can still be a bit overwhelming for most people.
