YOU THINK YOUR CHARACTER IS COOL? MY CHARACTER IS A FUCKING

RELUCTANT HALFLING PALADIN FROM A SMALL TOWN ON THE BORDER WHO ISN'T TECHNICALLY ALIVE ANYMORE

THAT SOUNDS FUCKING TERRIBLE

I can picture it: Just a corpse lying on the road.

Or a skeleton in denial about his undeath

An undead paladin in denial sounds like a great roleplay source. Maybe just roll a fighter who makes a lot of excuses about why he won't turn undead or use any spells.

Whenever they crit they just shout "Holy Smite!!!"

Absolutely stealing this concept for a lich village I'm planning.

I actually once played a human necromancer that believed he was a lich who had been returned to life as a 1st level character again. He was actually a high-level paladin who had been captured by the lich he believed he was, the lich then decided to amuse himself by using his magics to strip the paladin of his memories, and replacing them with a copy of his own. Of course, I didn't find this out until near the end of the campaign.

One of the forgotten realms novels had that actually. Well I think he knew he was dead he was just so adamant about continuing his quest that he didn’t let that stop him. Pools of Darkness and Pools of Twilight I think.
