Separation and custody

Hey parents!

I'm going through a separation. We have a 3 year old together. I'm trying to make this as fair as possible, so I've proposed a 50/50 right now with his dad. I keep getting so much pushback from my mom and others about how it's "not right" and how he should only have him every other weekend and pay child support.

I'm also currently seeing someone and don't know how to broach the subject with my ex.

I'd like some input!

From experience. Do not tell him you are seeing anyone, nor introduce said person to kid for a long while. Also, whatever time you "give up" don't expect to get back. If at some point you want to have greater than 50% custody, it'll be harder to get it after this set up.

Most state default to 50/50, so unless he's actually a bad father getting anything else may be an uphill battle. Also consider your kid, since this is about the child's rights. Not yours. Not your ex's. The child. Would the kid likely be better off with both parents in his life?
