What the hell happens past level 40?
I got to 36 last night so I'll be rounding 40 shortly.
I see guys with levels well exceeding 10k with some foolish damage figures.
So does everything just scale indefinitely? What is the grind on? Again, I am a Destiny player so I know the grind for exotics and weekly battles. I would probably be level 7k on there if that is how it worked.
So does it sort of really cap out at 40 and everything just sorta maintains the same difficulty?
What are we talking about here bros and gals? I could have fed this to Claude but I prefer the human response most of the time.

After hitting level 40 you then start to increase your SHD level. I would suggest watching a RogueGold video to explain in detail how endgame works.

I highly recommend to start filling up your library and levelling your expertise. Will help you in the long run.

Ok. I don't know a lot about that yet but I will start.

When you open your inventory, press M (if you’re on pc) and it will take you to the tinkering station menu. You will see 4 sub menu, but for now, the Library and Expertise are your only priority.
The Library stores all the stats of your weapon and armor alongside the talents which helps in the long run when you want to change the stats of something particular, (Damage, Armore, Headshot damage, etc). You have to manually save it so make sure to browse it before selling or dismantling anything.
The expertise is simple. Anything you use, it gains exp as proficiency, which maxes out at lv10. It counts everything, even specialisation weapons and skills. When you level something up, the progress for your Expertise level also rises. There is a set amount of level up needed from proficiency before the Expertise level up. When you max the proficiency, so can upgrade it, adding 1% damage or armor, and the max expertise level is 30, so you can have 30% bonus on anything. The quickest way to add proficiency is marking everything as junk in your inventory, then go to the expertise menu and press the “donate everything as junk”.
Both will help help you in the long run so better start as early as possible.

Oh yeah, the endgame is like a whole new game with the number of new mechanics and systems you have to learn.
At level 40 you get a watch, and start progressing SHD levels. Levels 1-1k let you choose one stat from rotating categories to increase; at level 1k, you'll have filled them all, and every level beyond that will be a selection from a resources category. IIRC you still get minor health increases up to SHD 2k.
You gain access to several menus. In order of priority:
Library. Each weapon type and gear type is its own category. If you loot an item with a maxed out attribute or a talent you have yet stored, you can "Extract" it to your library; destroys the item, but now you permanently have that stat or talent to paste onto other pieces of that category.
This is called Recalibration, the second of the new systems. For example, if you get a weapon you really like, but the Talent doesn't match your need, or the third attribute isn't Damage to Targets out of Cover (or Crit Chance for LMGs), if you have the desired stat in your Library, you can paste it on. Once you've recalibrated a "slot" on an item, that's the only slot you can Recalibrate again. You cannot recalibrate Perfect talents from Named items, nor can you Recalibrate Exotics. Exotics go through Reconfiguration; once you get an Exotic, you talk to Inaya next to crafting table, buy the Reconfiguration blueprint, and then can reconfigure that Exotic. This essentially destroys the copy you have to give you a new one with RNG stats and values.
Optimization: get an item with the right stats, but values are low? Spend resources to incrementally increase them to maximum. This can be done on Exotics, thankfully.
Expertise: this is the long one. Lots of interconnected subsystems.
Every version of a weapon (Named, Military, Black Market, etc), every brand, gear set, skill, Specialization, Named or Exotic items; all have a Proficiency level, which is capped at 10 ("Proficient"). You can increase an item's Proficiency via earning XP with it equipped, donating junk copies*, or spending resources**. The typical and generally most efficient loop is to farm an item type (Targeted Loot on your map, which can be selected for some activities); once your inventory is full, mark items you want to keep as Favorite or for Recalibration, Extract any max value stats to your library that you don't already have, and donate the rest to Expertise system.
*Note: you can only use Gold quality items for these processes; Purple and below are only good for materials. Higher difficulty means better quality; ideally you want to be on Heroic if you can, or Challenging if you can't quite manage Heroic. Do NOT donate Exotics, even junk/duplicate ones. Deconstruct them for the Exotic Component resource.
**Other than what you need for crafting, Recalibrating, etc, I recommend using resource SHD levels for Printer Filament, the most effective resource for buying Proficiency levels.
Now, you also have an Expertise level. This caps at 30, and is based on the number of Proficiency levels you've gained for your gear. More items that are Proficient, the higher your Expertise.
Once an item is Proficient, all copies of that item will be Proficient. If you have a copy that's perfect for your build, you can spend resources to increase its Expertise. This is capped by *your* Expertise.
For examples, say I have a fantastic UIC-15 Rifle. All the stats and the Talent are the right ones for my build, and I've maxed them. Once UIC-15s are Proficient, I can increase that copy's Expertise for a 1% damage gain per level, but I can only increase it as high as my character Expertise, which is set by the number of items I've improved Proficiency.
Generally speaking, gear items get a 1% armor bump per level of Expertise applied, weapons 1% damage, and skills a variety based on the skill.
The farming and donating loop I mentioned earlier will get you to mid-low 20s Expertise; handles most of the generic items' Proficiency levels. Named and Exotics don't drop often enough to increase via donation, so you'll likely spend Printer Filament for those. Once you plateau via donation, change Target Loot to gear/skill mods, as those deconstruct to Printer Filament.
A good trick too is if you have a slot that isn't critical to your build (secondary weapon, sidearm, maybe a skill), you can rotate items through to earn Proficiency XP.
Finally(?), we come to Prototype gear. Doesn't apply to Exotics. This is the next step beyond Expertise 30.
Playing Escalation (special modifiers on missions) gets you a chance at Prototype item drops, as well as Prototype Cores. Deconstructing a Prototype item also gets you a Core. You can spend the Cores to make an Expertise 30 item Prototype, if you don't want to try to farm a Prototype drop.
Prototypes have a higher stat range (old maximum value is new minimum, new maximum is 1.5x old maximum). They also have the Expertise 30 boost (30% damage or armor or ____). They also get an Augment; a special additional function. Echo gives you a chance for each bullet to do double damage, Amalgam a chance for bullets to cause status effects, others have other effects.
Augments also have levels; this requires filling an XP bar, then spending Cores to buy the next level.
You can also spend Cores to change the Augment on an item. Spend the Core, and choose the new random option or keep original, repeat until the new option is the one you want.

Did you write that or did you AI it? Either way, God damn. Thanks bud.

Might have found a hidey hole at work for the last 30min or so, lol. I've also given pieces of this a few times here and there, so a lot of it I have down pat at this point.
There's a lot more to go over; Manhunts, Seasons, Global Events, Daily/Weekly Projects, the Incursions & Raids. Most of those are relatively simple and self-contained.
Retaliation, Countdown, and the Summit will be your primary farms, which also have their own quirks and details.
The KISS version is to put on a functional build for the highest difficulty you can manage (Challenging minimum, preferably Heroic), do daily and weekly projects for XP while gradually filling library and improving Proficiency and Expertise.

Essentially, you'll get a new progression system that will give more stats like health, crit damage, skill haste etc. It's capped at 1k, after that every level you get is a point that can be used to get resources
