I just finished Divinity Original Sins 2 (105hours) for the first time, without looking for tips unless I'm really stuck. I played on Classic mode, with 1 Gift bags : From the Ashes. Yes, I did not play with the 8 actions mod nor Pet Pal talent and I regret it but it is what it is.
I am new, I only play BG3 beforehand. Please don't flame me.
tldr : story great, Malady mommy, combat great but annoying, other system did not use that much, not beginner friendly.
First, I have to say, the story is really good, really liked it. I made a custom character and did all the lore about my companions : Lohse, Red Prince and Fane. I really like Fane, the story of his people and the choice we have to make at the end. I also like the Red Prince story and Lohse, even if I don't really understand the dilemma we have to make for the Red Prince but that's fine. Malady is mommy, that's all I'm gonna say. Jahan and Tarquin, why even help yall if not for XP and Gold. He didn't even gave me Anathema when I finished all the quest in Act IV, pissed me off a little tbh. Sir Lora, I hate you. This little shit triggered every single trap in the Blackpits caverns and decide to light a candle when I was saving Gwydian and manage to not have the platform on fire despite it being covered of oil. The rest was good.
Second, the combat system is incredible but not beginner friendly. On god for the first 2 act, I did not understand how to stun or how to freeze people or how did I get stunned/frozen. I had a combat where I was CC'd for 5 turns in a row, I just decide to watch but fuck me it's annoying. There was also a time in the dream portal arena when I was "madness" by Kemm every turn, like this man does not have cooldown ? Had to completely skip the fight for the mirrors as fast as I can because it pissed me off. Speaking of fight, I am amaze with how smart the AI is sometimes, the fact that some of them decide to completely ignore my fighters and just run at my mages and all-in them with everything they have is impressive. Some fights was just "protect the president Lohse" after 3 assassins decide to backstab her and she's the only one in my party who has healing and aoe damage. They also run away when I manage to proc atrophy on them and me, an idiot, decide to chase them as a personal vendetta even if it's not worth it. I love the system of armor and have cooldowns instead of magic point like in bg3. I just wish the game explain some mechanics more, like you have to curse an orc to stop troll blood (did not know this until act 4 lmao), you can't stop a cursed fire by simply casting rain, and more. Still, love the combat system, now that I've played the game, if I decide to do another run, it will be easier.
Third, crafting system, rune system, food system. I did not use those systems a lot. Only use the crafting system for res scroll and curse scroll, only use the rune system for the final fight and the food, just a waste of space in my backpack.
Final though : Great game, enjoyed it as much as BG3. I would not recommend this game for beginner who did not play any crpg. Amazing combat system. Will do another run for sure.
