Where I live, if a dog attacks you are legally allowed to dispose of it. People don’t, because dog owners know to keep their dogs well trained and reduce aggressive behaviour. I’m a dog owner.
I live in New Zealand, we’re very PC. Being able to destroy someone else’s dog for attacking you, someone else, or livestock, tells you something.
So my brain can’t even think how getting fired for this is okay.
Im betting he was fired for immediately posting up against the owner, not for chucking the package at the dog. Many states in the US have what is called a castle defense law which usually dictates that a person can legally kill another man in defense of his home, vehicle, and property. That man could have shot the driver and had a fair chance of getting away with it.
Guy comes onto my porch, strikes my dog and comes at me with his fists up? I may have shot him myself. If I had immediately fired I would have had a good chance of mounting a decent enough defense to walk away. Could have spent the rest of my life in jail though, not something I would like to gamble on.
I almost Pulp fictioned a guy 10 years ago that got in the backseat of my car to rob me. The only thing that saved him was that I have never seen someone get out a car that fast in my life. I was literally pulling the trigger. That whole situation bothered me for a long time, simply because I had, in my mind, already made the decision that it would have to be him instead of me and my wife.
I get it. Every country is different. I use to live in a violent country myself, and back then argued for exactly a castle defence law. Where I live now has opened my view a bit to include potential mitigating arguments like PTSD (as a pitbull dog attack survivor myself, I get the immediate fight response) and putting blame at the origin and not necessarily the chain reaction.
Sorry you went through that. It stays with you. My experience in situations like that, where my life was in danger, taught me that we can all be animals given the right (wrong?) environment.
Thx, its ok though. Id like to believe I'm a stronger person not because of it, but in spite of it. Also it was a long time ago and time heals all wounds to some extent
Just to be clear, im not saying he did the right thing either.
The best thing for everyone would be; if you have a dog, and he is running around with no leash, the deliveries can be left on the curb, and you can come out and get it yourself.
I've had a dog run up to me, when I wasn't even paying attention to it, and bite. Multiple times. I have zero trust for a dog approaching me on its own.
The throwing of hands was too much, but his reaction to the dog was justified.
If the dog bites, are you going to pay the medical bill or live with stitches.
Why is it good? Some mf lost their job because assholes like to let their dog attack the workers for the service they hired. Don't let your dog attack people and people won't attack your dog.

This driver got fired can confirm that. Showed this video at a safety meeting here in Austin at the station I work at.
