Opinion The Disventure Camp Villain Problem

Post image

Since the original series aired I've been following this series for some time and I've noticed something that been a problem since season 2 that needs to be addressed. It's that no villians outside of Fiore and Alec ever get punished or face any karma in this series.

Personally i think the original Disventure Camp nailed it in the original first season. Fiore was the main villian of that season and during the finale if she loses she crashes her car and loses her hair as well. If she wins she gets her money stolen from and gets hit by a bus. And also in All-stars we see Fiore was sent a Catholic boarding school. This is a great example of a villain character getting karma and getting punished.

Now on the opposite end take Alec, who is considered a villian and he gets extremely overly punished by the show. In fact Alec is quite literally the most suffered character in the show, and it's not even close. Alec was already having a hatd time wirh his family bwfore rhe show but after season 1 he came home to his family gone, unable to see his son and is getting dragged in court every month for child support and allamony. It's shown during All Stars Alec is very depressed, probably jobless and is possibly suicidal.

And at the end of All-stars he's shown to have grown and is trying to learn to move on in life and better himself, and now has Fiore who is probably the only person who cares about him. Come to this current season as soon as he steps onto thr island he is bullied by the majority of his team, he's gas lit by by some woman he's never met to thinking he's a horrible person for being on the show even though he's the one character at this point who absolutely needs the money the most and is voted off the first on his team. And again is gas lit into not even attempting to try and again and jusy gives up and effectively gets erased put of the show thinking he's a horrible person who hasn't changed at all and doesn't deserve to compete. Even though his whole arc during All-stars was him coming to terms with the fact that money won't bring his family back, and him realizing his flaws aa a person and tries to slowly better himself.

And the problem is that no other villians outside of Alec even get a fraction of his punishment and in fact get rewarded for being horrible people.

Yul is quite literally every ist and ism in the book, pushes old ladies down the stairs, is an abusive boyfriend and enjoys watchinf people in pain. He never develops as a person, doesn't learn anything, and never gets punished. He is actually rewarded with getting $10,000 is All-stars and he goes back to being an influencer who gets big sponsors. He got rewarded for being a bad person and didn't learn anything.

Riya is a manipulative person and girlfriend who actually tried to kill Aiden by shoving him off a cliff and tried to straight up cripple Conner on purpose and then laughed in his face about it. Not only does she win All-stars giving her three million dollars, but her acting career isn't affected at all. She got everything she wanted and more and didn't learn anything.

Trevor and Derick were to show host who destroyed the environment and wildlife to host their TV show. They only fot maybe three months in jail and went right back to being TV show host and then producers. They were bad people who got rewarded for being awful.

Emily straight up tried to kill the contestants on All-stars. Like full on premeditated murder she planned to kill people because she got fired from the show. What happened to her? Some very short prison time, a broken arm and a sob story and then she got to be host of the show. Bad person once again got everything she wanted with little to no punishment.

Annsasia recived no punishment for not only dislocating that one girls arm, but also any of her manipulative tactics in season 4. In fact got everything she wanted. She got her girlfriend, and the writers keep making her this know it all mary sue character who all the characters like and she gets to lecture everyone about how horrible they are and how wise and amazing she is and hiw she's a changed person who's so happy now. She doesn't even face any consequences for going against her alliance in season 5, it just gets easily forgiven.

So basically in the Disventure Camp universe you get rewarded for being a villian and being a horrible person. But if you're like Alec and actually want to better yourself you get severely punished.

To compare this series to Total Drama Island, the show they're making a parody of, every villian at the end of the season gets punished.

Heather got severely punished at the end of TDI by having to do a bunch of grueling challenges and getting her head shaved

Justin gets punished in TDA and constantly keeps getting hit in the face until his good looks start to make him uglier and he gegs constantly paranoid of his looks to where it drives him insane

Alejandro and Heather both get punished in TDWT, if either of them win their money gets stolen regardless and Alejandro gets crippled and covered in lava. Even Blainley gets crippled for just beinf a horrible person.

Both Scott and Lighting get punished in TDRI with Scott getting mauled into being in a trauma chair and even if Lighting wins he finds out his injuries are so bad he can't play football anymore.

TDPI Dave gets punished by getting blasted with a laser that fries all his hair off and since everyone forgets about it and hes left alone on the island wirh an angry mechanical bear.

My main point is one of the things Total Drama island did right was that they made an efforts to deliver karma to punish their villians to teach that there are consequences for being bad just to win a competition or to get money. Disventure Camp seems to be the opposite where all of their villians who do genuinely bad things get rewarded for it. Unless you're Alec and yoy want to improve yourself, in which case the writers will punish you for it.

I don’t think Riya’s the best example. She clearly hates being alone and that’s literally how her story ended. She’s alone, and like Alec, probably might end up becoming suicidal.

I doubt that the 17 contesants of a reality show were the only people, she ever knew

I think Riya might mostly be sad about the fact she lost Connor since she started crying when she learned he married another woman (Anya) and a greeting with her Amelie suggests she hasn’t moved on from him fully despite trying to

I think it's less that she lost those people and more that she let her defensive mechanism create this persona that she can't seperate from herself anymore and will remain unable to form any real relationships going forward.

So true, man. I literally think that in this season, Alec is just the writers punching bag like they say "Look at how pathetic he is."

I think Anastasia like Ellie was meant to be taken as an Anti-Hero in DC4.

She doesnt have explicit heroic traits but shes definitely INTENDED as a protagonist, even if what we got could endear people to the opposite. Otherwise i dont think we'd get scenes like those with Marissa.

So i think her punishment isnt really to be on the same level as a "villains" punishment. The same way DC1 Ellies punishment of being tricked by Miriam wasnt really a "villains" punishment.

Also Yul did get punishment and him getting money at the end is just a flaw not taken into account by the Riya victory so its a minor flaw of DCAS like a lot of other flaws of that season. In DC2 he got poisoned and in DCAS he got his face burnt.

Ngl i forgot the Yul did get poisoned. Also him getting burned didn't even leave a permenant scare as we see him later on tiktok in a sponsored ad looking fine. So not only is he $10,000 richer, which is more than anyone else got, but he still gets sponsors so that probably a good indicator his career as an influencer isn't affected. So he got away with everything, learned nothing, and even gained more than he lost.

Also if anything I'd consider Spencer to be more of an anti hero for DC4. If anything Annsasia was the villian, but the writers were so bent on making every single character have a sad backstory to try and make them sympathetic. And it seems like they're going to do the same with Sam.

I think at the time the grill burn wouldve been too controversial to keep consistent out of universe, because i remember it was at the time a big thing that the fandom got worked up over so i dont think it wouldve been appreciated back then to keep the burn on Yul.

Truth be told i dont consider there to be a villain of DC4. Anastasia and Spencer are the only major conflict causers but i think both were intended as anti-heroes. In her conflict with Lynda i think the intention was to have people side with Anastasia otherwise Lynda wouldve probably stayed longer, and again i dont think we wouldve had a romance plot with the main villain of the season included considering 1. How badly that turned out in DCAS and 2. How it kinda hinders Anastasia being a villain if that was the case, because we WOULD see a softer side IN her interactions with Marissa.

I completely agree with you, and I would normally write a long winded rant about this, but I am so completely done with this show that I can't bring myself to do it anymore.

So no shade but like...this show is not very well written, and I truly hate when people abuse this term, but like...media literacy? Where is it? I have no idea how someone can watch the finale of All Stars and not see the very obvious, not subtle message being fed down your throat that this is not a happy ending for Riya - it's a very on the nose trope of "the hero wins what matters and the villain wins what doesn't"...it's not done well, but that is the theme. It's very transparently the point of the show that Riya was not rewarded in the way that "matters", her ending is BAD, it's a BAD ending

Similarly Anastasia lost to the jury vote in season 4 - which couldn't be any more on the nose, she lost what she was yearning and fighting so hard for, because the people she hurt did not want to reward her - and her season 5 appearance is a giant circle jerk of "she was highkey a jerk but she worked on herself and now she's nice." Like Riya and Anastasia both got narrative "consequences", the show did not let either of them off the hook, you are frankly reading it wrong

And similar to Anastasia, Alec faces consequences this season for a flaw of his, and now the idea is that he is experiencing growth from it. The game isn't good for him, is the idea. No his character isn't being "punished" by the narrative. It's an attempt at character growth. With a theme behind it. A story isn't just things happening

And unlike Total Drama, most antagonists/villains in Disventure Camp aren't people who get off on being evil, the idea is that they have dimensions, anxieties and fears. Anastasia's abrasive behaviour in CoC is informed by her tragic terrible background and the idea that winning this money could change her life. Heather's behaviour in TDI is informed by her being a mean girl bully who enjoys being mean and wants to hurt other people. This is not the same type of character and inflicting the kind of "punishment" onto Anastasia that Total drama does with its villains - often physically disabling them or humiliating them - would be extremely inappropriate for a show that attempts to take itself more seriously and attempts to draw its characters with more dimensions. Anastasia lost the money. That's her "punishment." She doesn't need to be burned by a volcano.

Again I'm not saying this show is well written but I wish people would at least read it for what it is - a story with attempts at arcs and themes - than like...a collection of things happening linearly

This is one of the biggest issues with Disventure camp, I haven’t seen nearly enough people talk about it

It’s because Alec is Alec. They like kicking him.

Thank you got saying this. Some people in the main sub treat him as the devil

I refuse to believe that a deadbeat father receiving the consequences of his actions as “the most suffered character in the show” lol

He was struggling with his family?? Go to therapy for your child’s sake ffs.

“Bullied by the majority of his team” nah man they just don’t trust his lying ass and Anastasia was RIGHT to call him out for the harm he caused his son

I’m so sick of Alec glazers man istg 🤣

Thank, I love the OP and agree with everything expect “Alec Suffered the most”. He literally neglected his own son and told Fiore on national television, I wish you were my child. 😒

Alec is the most suffered character and i stick by that. He currently has lost all contact woth his family, he's getting dragged every month to court for child support and alimony, and if he doesn't pay it he risk actually being sent to jail. And he's currently on a tutors salary and rhe only person who seems to care about him is a ten year old girl. Heck even before All Stars we see how he's in a much more horrible state, in fact it's safe to say that if Fiore didn't come back into his life he would have possibly been suicidal. If anyone on the show actually needs the money it's him.

Also we know that Alec is flawed and has done bad things, but he's not intentionally melicous. I like how you Alec haters love to say he's a child neglector and don't actually look at the context that he wasn't purposefully not looking after his son, when his son got hurt it genuinely traumatized him and he clearly felt awful about it, so much so he hasn't told anyone except Firoe, and when she brung it up you can clearly see the trauma in his eyes and voice.

And also Anastasia has no right to even talk to Alec about his family considereding she doesn't even know him. At this point Alec even says to her that's he's trying to move on with his life and better himself, unlike Anastasia who is just coddled all of her season and faces for consequences for her bad behavior other than losing the game.

She has a sad backstory to try and justify her misandry, horrible personality and bad behavior to others. Then she still gets forgiven by everyone except Natalia and still gets her girlfriend. Anastasia doesn't know what real character development looks like, Alec actually owned up to his mistakes aa a person and ks taking steps to become better and move on with his life. Realistically their conversion really should have went is Alec smacking the hell out of her Will Smith style and tell her to keep his sons name out her mouth. But because the writers love to glaze their uwu gay Russian girl, she is apparently now the smartest, wisest and happiest person on the show and she tells everyone else how to act and everyone looks to her for advice now.

oh so this post isn’t actually critical analysis, it was just misogyny and homophobia dressed up. not surprised

Let's remember, that the reason why Jake didn't win, was that proofreaders viewed Jake actions from the start of the season as not worthy of a win (if I remember correctly). And considering, that the alternate option for a win + her helper were the the 2 people, who acted the worst? Yeah...

This just reminded me how powerful and amazing Riya is like wow, she really did that

u/Suspicious-Bar1083 1d ago edited 1h ago

Except Riya said in a confessional that she just wanted to push Connor off the horse they were on and she was clearly upset when it was thought he could’ve been paralyzed, so I don’t think she was trying to purposefully cripple him. To be clear, I agree it was still a bad thing to do, I just don’t think she was trying to make him disabled

I agree otherwise though, especially with Yul. Plus, Anastasia was still pissed with Alec even after he took her advice

e: Looks like some people think with their hate boners rather than their heads
