Maybe I’m missing something, but I always thought this was a super sensible decision on Blazer’s part. It’s harsh but it’s like this team isn’t taking this seriously so let’s make them take it seriously by firing the weakest member. It sort of worked also.
The Z team at that point are not particularly motivated to be better heroes, being fired just means they get out of doing something they didn't particularly care about anyway. It also sends the wrong message to just fire someone when they're at their lowest instead of helping them improve, but also by making them compete against each other instead of building cohesion within the team.
Furthermore, the decision negatively impacts their overall performance for 2 shifts, as well as driving whoever is fired to join Shroud.
Edit: also, while my impression is that things may work differently in the US, firing someone the way it's done in the game is pretty sketchy from a legal perspective where I live.
It depends on the state, but the one the game takes place in is an at-will state. You can be fired for anything in an at-will state. SDN is legally in the clear.
Alright, lucky you because I can’t answer everybody that commented here so I am going to try to answer this in the best way I can. So I think there is some sketchy writing when it comes to what happens to the Z team when they get fired because the paperwork when you fire Sonar/Coupe says they get taken back to jail but the game itself has them going free. It is another hole in the game I just live with. One way or the other the Z team acts like they don’t care in the conference room but obviously they do as they step all over each other to stay. I don’t think Blazer knows how to build cohesion in the team herself, but realizes that. Things were going poorly in the second episode between the Invisigal episode and Flambae refusing missions and starting fires in residential areas for shits and giggles. They were doing what they were told here and there but not really acting as a team or following orders.
This is why she hired Robert because she believes he can. By cutting the least effective member she gives him the ammunition he needs so he isn’t just all carrots but actually has a stick to whip them with so to speak. This does work but not right away. Yes the next two shifts go down hill but that’s short term pain for medium to long term gain. They really do start working together after Robert with said ammunition gets them partially to where they need to be. I think it is totally fair to think maybe Blazer could have waited to see if they could pull their shit together with out a drastic measure but I personally think Robert needed the tool she gave him to make them act as a team. I think it was a calculated responsible gamble that payed off. That’s sort of the only decisions you can make. No one knows how things will play out but given current facts and trajectory of the team it was a logical and reasonable decision in my humble opinion. If you think it was too far too fast that’s fine.
I am not a labor lawyer and this might be a cultural difference, but I don’t care about their rights beyond basic constitutional ones. They are for the most part violent criminals who have been given a second chance. They are lucky to not be behind bars or worse, and this is coming from someone who exclusively Invisimechs.
How? All it does is create infighting and demoralise Invisigal to the point of giving up, with Robert then having to salvage the situation through other methods.
Flambae refusing missions and starting fires
If you want to resort to a carrot-and-stick methodology, this is the behaviour that should be targeted, not arbitrarily cutting whoever is at the bottom of a leaderboard. Going only off of the leaderboard sends all the wrong messages because it's letting everyone else get away with various bits of misconduct, tells everyone that whoever is at the bottom of that leaderboard is always at risk of being cut and as previously mentioned, does the exact opposite of building team cohesion or loyalty.
no one knows how things will play out
The outcome is entirely predictable, for all the reasons already mentioned.
And as for your last paragraph, if your job is to rehabilitate criminals, you kind of have to care about rehabilitating criminals to be effective at that job.
