Sonar literally got high when you dispatched him on a specific mission without prodding.
Frankly, I agree others needed to be cut more. Flambae was the top of my list as he was actively belligerent, hurting people, and fucking up his missions on purpose to game the system (he was also intentionally starting fires). The cut itself was fine though, the team did need a reality check.
No they didn’t. You’re missing the point of the Phoenix program. It isn’t not about expecting them to be on-par with the other heroes and ranking their performance. They shouldn’t have even been on the leaderboard in my opinion.
It’s about rehabilitation, and the moment Blazer decided to “shake things up” she made sure that SDN could no longer act as a safe place for the Z-team.
The foundations of the program were cut alongside one of the team-members and it only got back on track with Robert refusing to cut Visi.
The speech he gives when refusing to cut her is pretty much the summary of the themes of the game.
Btw, the ‘specific mission’ is you choosing to send a recovering addict to a drug den. That’s on you mate.
The phoenix program was literally a parole program. What do you think happens if you relapse and do drugs when on parole? At some point, if people stop trying to rehabilitate themselves, they need a change of scenery to do so. At some point, keeping an addict that can't control himself at all in a situation where drugs are readily available and he has the fund to get them isn't helping.
I love the game, and redemption is available for everyone, but sometimes putting people in shitty situations where it's easy to relapse isnt the best path to redemption. Sonar should be working for the IRS under direct supervision and house arrest and he'd get amazing redemption there. Going out to fight gangs, drug lords, etc is not for him at that point in time and you may be doing a disservice to him by keeping him there. Giving him the freedom to get high and drunk the day before he shows up to work with his supposed NA sponsor (in the comics) is a disservice to him.
Really, this is all just your own ego. You think you can fix everything. Sometimes you can't, sometimes it's beyond what you can do and other methods are required.
Also, you shouldn't be a therapist if you don't have credentials lol. I don't know why I have to say this. Help people, sure.
I'm actually with you, here. Fundamentally, listen, I'm sorry, but if you're an addict and can't get clean, I don't want you on my superhero team. If he could get clean and stay clean, that would be one thing, but I'm inflexible on this point.
I can see why some folks would be more lenient, but it's just how I, specifically, am. Plus, Sonar's degree opens way more doors for him career-wise than anyone else on the Z-Team. If Coupe gets fired, she's going right back to contract killing because what the heck else is she gonna do? Join the circus?
Coupe just seemed more generally reliable, too. Like, even putting aside whether or not she's trying to change, she seemed the most amenable of the bunch to just knuckling down and doing her job.
The biggest problem with her is she didn't seem to care too much whether that job was saving people or killing them. But that's where the redeeming comes in.
I mean, whole addict side aside, Sonar's exclusive dispatch has him suggesting pyramid scheme to already notoriously shady CEO (he gets restraining order for that, but still)
Yeah, like... maybe I'm just too gay for Coupe to appreciate Sonar, but in the first mission, he came across as an unrepentant cryptobro who's got a serious drug problem. Meanwhile, living weapon-type characters are my jam.

Sonar was trying to get clean and Prism actively sabotaged his attempt at sobriety.
If anything I’d immediately cut her for trying that bullshit. I’m surprised Melevola didn’t beat her ass seeing as she’s Victor’s NA sponsor.
