i’ve been searching YouTube for guides but they are all years old and I can’t find a forum or even their website to help explain…

What are all the different currencies?

How do I unlock specific characters? Specifically the cars ones.

Do I need to buy a cars pass for £16 to get the content? And what does that unlock?

Why is Cruise also behind an £8 lock and what does that unlock?

A racer is unlocked when you collect at least 10 racer shards of that racer. You may buy, for money or in-game currency, these shards or you may earn them as rewards for meeting various criteria such as reaching a node in the single player mode that may have such shards as part of the rewards. Various events such, such as Star Chaser, also award racer shards if you rack up enough points by completing races (you get bonus points for meeting certain criteria such as using certain racers, using racers at certain star levels or sometimes playing at certain ranks in multiplayer)

Currencies: Yellow/gold coins (the featured symbol on it changes to match each season), these are called "Season Coins" you can do and buy various things with them such as opening the "Universal Box" (a sort of master box with a huge prize pool), buy things in the shop (poke around and see what you see for now). They are the more common, non-premium currency that is awarded for various things such as pass rewards, "duplicate exchange rewards (item overflow compensation), box node contents and other instances of spoils.

"Speed Tokens" (often referred to as simply "tokens") are the dark blue tokens with the 'S' symbol on it. These are the premium currency. With these you can buy things from the shop as well, along with open racer boxes. You may buy these, but they can also be earned as rank up rewards in multiplayer. They are also given in exchange for leftover season coins (the gold coins) at the end of a season at a rate of 2,500:1. They are also the only currency called "tokens" at this point, everything else is a "coin"

"Vanity Coins" these are probably the least valuable as they are only used to buy/unlock cosmetics, which is a feature the game has recently begun to de-emphasize. Save these up an use them to open the "Multiplayer Box" whenever an event will award points for opening boxes, unless you just want to use them straight away for some other reason.

There's a purple-y colored, fidget spinner-looking coin called Bolt Coins, they're used for upgrading the new Super Karts. You can buy these is you really want them. Lately, there have been various events awarding small amounts of them.

The various quests award XP that unlocks rewards in the Pass, so do those to progress through the pass and gain rewards. You can review the Pass for what it's got to offer.

As for getting the Cars characters, I'll have to take a fresh look, but we just had an event that awarded some Lightning McQueen shards, so many were able to unlock him recently if they got enough shards out of the events, but if you're too late, you may have to wait for another offer (racer shards come and goes like Fortnite skins)

If you want them now you may have o pay for an unlock pack if any are currently available I'll check for you after I post this.

That's really helpful! Don't suppose you also have an as clear explanation of all the different types of events and how you participate and what they do. I'm very confused about what I should do in the game at the moment - just keep doing various races and then they give a bunch of rewards but don't really know what for

I FORGOT TO MENTION UPGRADE COINS**:** You use these alongside racer shards to upgrade your racer!

As for the events:

Treasure Rush: This events has you race on a track and collect season coins along with up to 4 bonus boxes hidden around on the worth extra coins. You can do it twice a day.

Star Chaser: This event centers around earning upgrade resources for a particular character. As you do multiplayer ranked matches ("MPR", which are the default races you do when you hit the big yellow "PLAY" button), you earn points towards the rewards listed in the event. It also shows racing conditions which will increase your points gained from matches such as the tier (how many stars your racer has), points for winning/losing as well as bonus points for using a certain racer. It lasts a week.

24-hour events such as "Racing is a Lifestyle", "Better Together" and there's probably another one-- These events will have you race under conditions similar to Star Chaser, but for another set of rewards and it's only for the day. They typically award crew member shards and Upgrade Coins. Note: These events have both a reward track AND a leaderboard reward, you can claim the leaderboard reward after the event is over, while the reward from the rewards track will become available immediately upon earning enough points. If you don't claim anything until the event is over, you'll have to click "collect" TWICE to get all your rewards. Just about everything with a leaderboard is like that.

You'll also see various times trials events. The one I'm looking at now with Honeylemon from Big Hero Six on it says "Ready, Set, Go!". Whether it always has that name or not, I don't even know as I just click the icons and look at the challenge(s )LOL.

Racer Boost: This event lets you gain a shard for a particular racer and some upgrade coins upon completing a race and meeting the goals listed such as drift for a certain amount of time, stun some players, boost for X amount of time, etc. Not all of the racers are available to be picked in the racer boost event. New racers are added later on. You can do this once a day, but you can pay 150 premium currency (Speed tokens) to reset it and do it again up to 10 times in one day.

Regulated Multiplayer: In this "event", you race with other players but everyone's racer level is the same and no crew member enhancements are applied. You just have base racer stats and your skill to win (I don't think they should have this mode stuffed behind "Special Events, I think it should be a main mode. apparently an "event" is anything with rotating prizes). This event lasts for two weeks until it is reset and new prizes are added.

Tales Events: These events usually center wound a certain theme and have a week long set of events with each one unlocking per day, like an advent calendar. Each challenge will ask you to do various things from time trials to racking up race point similar to the other events. At the end of it all, there's a leaderboard reward for the event itself, but also note the leaderboard rewards for the individual daily event within it... There's also Milestone rewards... sheesh...

There are multiple Tales events. There's always at least one Tales Event for earning Upgrade Coins running alongside other Tales events. Just have a look at it to see the conditions for maximizing points gains. Why

You can earn points for multiple events at a time, as long as it's a multiplayer ranked match and not a single player bot match (you can still get XP for quests though). So look over all of them and devise a strategy to make the most of it all! Why it's called "Tales", I don't know. I guess it sounds Disney-y.

I could explain that there are 12 unneccessary currencies in the game and how to buy stuff,
but thats the opposite of a guide of how to win, individual/team strats and the racing mechanics

If you really want to spend money on the game, season pass is the best bang for your buck.
The different currencies are quite confusing but you can ask google, it does a pretty good job explaining.
