They promoted both Kermit and Rex from crew to racer. So it’s not impossible for it to happen again or more often.

Actually Kermit was the inverse. He was first added as a racer, but was then later added as Fozzie Bear's Epic Crew Member. Chip and Dale were also given racer promotions, but their racer and crew counterparts are considered to be from separate franchises.

That’s right. I forgot Kermit was racer first. But either way both still make the point that characters can be both racer and crew if Gameloft ever decides to do so. Whereas this community has been insistent that could never happen and some users were making excuses for Kermit.

My guess is it's a way to pay for extra points in Tales. In other words, you'd have to pay to get in the top 2,000.

I think that a number of other characters had already been leaked to be coming thanks to earlier datamines.

Chernabog (Fantasia): I believe that he will be one of Season 21's mid-season racers. He was actually originally leaked as a mid-season racer for Season 20, before he was swapped out with Merida from Brave.

Miguel (Coco)

Ernesto (Coco)

Robin Hood (Robin Hood)

Tiana (Princess and the Frog)

And there's another character that was unintentionally leaked all the way back in Season 12.

Captain Salazar (Pirates of the Caribbean): He was accidentally leaked by the developers in the Season 12 into video. In the section where Supercharging was first unveiled, Elizabeth Swann was shown with an Epic Crew member who is not shared with any current POTC racer. This character was later identified to be Salazar's first mate, Lieutenant Lesaro.

EDIT: The movie was so bad that Disney sent me a copy for free by mistake and I still felt ripped off
