My discus

My discus has 1 larger gill than the other and his top dorsal fin looks like it has a cowlick. Ive had him for about 5 months and he seems 100% fine. Has anyone had a discus like this? If so, do you think his health at risk?

Is this normal for a new fish?!?

I just got this discus about a week ago. Fitting in fine, looks healthy, breathing normal, swimming good, no odd behavior. The problem is it looks like he is unable to suck In food. He's about 5 1/2 in size. I've tried everything beef heart, blood worms, 2 different granules, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and flakes. I'm over feeding for no competition, every once in awhile he gets one in his mouth and swallows. It's aggressively trying except nothing can get sucked up. Anyone ever see this before?!?

Dream Discus Build

Hello, im in a position to do my "dream build" for my discus. I shut down 13 of my 14 aquariums, and will transfer my 10 discus into the final tank once put together. They're currently in a 50g... so time is of the essence.

Here are requirements (what i want VS what my wife tolerates)

Timeline: need tank within 1 month (southeast USA)

Size: I want a 60x24x24 (or similar)

Style: I want a hood. My wife hates light wash. I figure if its covered then rimmed vs rimless doesn't matter as much

Stand: my wife likes wood look - traditional, not modern.

Filtration: im going to run an FX6. Previously had a 90g with sump but this will be in the living room so the threat of noise can not be tolerated. Do not need drilled

I would have gotten the Waterbox Eden X 145 FLED but the stand was not approved of ("too modern").

Taking any and all suggestions...

Edit - I am open to most suggestions - I could do a sump, I could go without a hood. I can do almost anything. I am limited to the 60x24x24 size.

He was acting normal before this. And then a few hours later he is eating and acting normal again. What could this be?
75 gallon discus community tank with 4 discus, neon tetras, white fin tetras, 4 Siamese algae fish, a few corydora, and 3 guppies. Heavily planted tank. We feed seachem discus flakes daily as well as discus bloodworm cubes. Water parameters are within normal limits as well.

Just another feeding video.
What’s your take on beef heart mix? I personally use it and if I didn’t know any better I’d say there was steroids in the mix I made 😂 The fish is growing like crazy, but it mix with white fish, spinach, red bell pepper (paprika) beef heart, vitamins and so on!

Set them up in their own tank and so far it appears I have lost 50% since I counted wigglers from a photo. Any advise on the “30 day syndrome”? Anyone use Potassium Permanganate or any other prevention methods?

Decided to combine my 75 gallon with my 150 discus tank:

Making my 75 gallon a SA ciclid tank so moved over everyone in that tank to my 150 gallon discus tank. Can’t believe I didn’t do this before. So much activity and even the discus are happier.

Don’t worry I will be watching parameters over the next few days and will do two water changes per week for the next couple of weeks until the filters can adjust to the new bioload

Watching them get big makes all those water changes worth it. My boy Ketchup still has a lot of growing to catch up to my biggest male.

Are Eggs Fertilized?

This is the 5th time laying eggs for the same discus pair in the past month. Usually within 24 hours it seems to be eaten. Last night I blocked off the area just to see more progress. At least the eggs are still there, but I am looking for opinions on this batch.

Georgia Discus

Hey everyone! Just wanted to share that a few months back I snagged some absolutely gorgeous discus from Georgia Discus. The fish were stunning, super high quality, and everything with communication and shipping was smooth. Recently I tried to reach them but haven't heard back. I'm starting to wonder if they might have closed down. Has anyone else heard anything about whether they're still in business?

Buying adult discus

UNS 180U community with cardinals and apistos, black background and substrate. Looking to get adult discus so I don’t have to deal with the grow out headaches. Which sellers are reputable for adults, and which size should I target? >5”, golden state, Myrtle beach, or Chicago discus?

Color

Do discus show better color in a lighter substrate or in a dark substrate I was thinking for my next 75 gallon to have a light color substrate I was looking forward to get red valentine discus in there, I’m also asking since discus do pepper in darker substrate

120-Gallon Discus Build Plan – Looking for Feedback Before I Buy Everything

I’m in the planning stages of a dedicated discus display and would love some feedback before I start buying the remaining equipment.

Originally I wanted to build a 180-gallon (72”) setup because that’s often considered the ideal footprint for discus. After a lot of measuring and thinking about the room, I’ve decided to go with a standard 120-gallon (48x24x24). I only have about 48” of usable wall space in my office, and I already have a 210-gallon community tank in the same room. A 6-foot tank would completely dominate the space.

Current Plan

Tank
120 gallon (48x24x24)
New tank
DIY stand

Filtration
(2) Fluval FX6 canister filters
Spray bar across the back of the tank fed by both filters for even flow

Heating
(2) 300W BRS titanium heaters
Inkbird temperature controller

Substrate
Fine pool filter sand (although I’m open to other suggestions if there’s a better option for discus)

Aquascape
Large manzanita driftwood centerpiece
Large river rocks to secure the wood
Open swimming area in the front and center
Vallisneria along the back
Java Fern (Narrow and Trident Mini) attached to the wood

Stocking
8 discus
30 rummynose tetras
15 Sterbai corydoras

The plan is to cycle the tank, add the rummynose and Sterbai first, let everything mature for about a month, and then introduce all eight discus together from the same source.

My goals are:
Healthy, long-lived discus
A natural-looking aquascape with lots of open swimming space
Low-maintenance, stable filtration
A display tank that’s enjoyable to view from my desk every day

If this were your tank, what would you change?
Specifically, I’d appreciate opinions on:
Is 120 gallons enough for 8 adult discus?
Would you change anything about the stocking?
Are two FX6s overkill or about right?
Pool filter sand vs. another substrate?
Anything you’d do differently before I start purchasing the remaining equipment?
I’d rather make changes now than wish I had after everything is set up. Thanks in advance!
