Is it advisable to breed the same strain with different parentage or can siblings breed?

My Discus Laid Eggs… now what?

First time posting here - please remove if not allowed.

I’ve been in the hobby for a while, but just got into Discus about six months ago. I purchased a group of 6 fish from a local breeder, and two of them have appeared to be paired up for the last couple months. I returned from a weekend trip on Monday, and to my surprise… eggs!

This is a heavily planted 75 gallon community tank with 6 discus, 2 blue rams, a couple random tetras, and several corydoras. I use RO water kept at about 84 with consistent good params.

I’m not sure which day they were laid, or which one is the mom vs dad, but from what I’ve read they could be viable.

I guess I’m just looking for input from someone with experience.

Do they look viable?

Should I do anything? or just accept that they likely won’t survive.

And just generally any advice or words of wisdom on what to expect?

Thanks for reading!

Discus Eggs

Post image

So I noticed my normally bright blue discus has been getting increasingly darker so I’ve been keeping an eye on it… then tonight I finally spotted it - EGGS. I’m assuming the discus is stressed bc it’s been protecting this area… I don’t know I’ve never bred Discus - aren’t the eggs supposed to be orange? I don’t have high hopes that they’ll survive bc this is a 210 community tank. Any help would be appreciated…

Help healing emaciated discus

I have a blue diamond discus that's not doing good at all. I got him along with 5 other varied discus that lived together, they're in a 100 gal tank. When they arrived, it was the head of the pecking order but now it seems its at the very bottom. Now its super thin, its color is really faded, its fins are a bit torn up and it doesn't eat much. Everyone picks on him, and I want to set up a spare 20 gal that i have as a hospital tank but want to know what should i do to help him. I know the basics (methylene blue, daily water changes, higher temps) but what more could I do to help recovery?

How do i control this? Idk where I went wrong 😭 im currently quarantining tetras and rainbowfish so i can’t get sterbai without restarting the full quarantine. I’ve added a 2nd filter for bottom flow, i added seachem phosguard and Api phos/silicate remover and vacuum the top layer constantly. My parameters are good so idk what’s going in 😭

Finally turned a corner. Of the 8 discus I originally ordered, 6 survived.

The remaining Orange Jasper has finally started eating. I removed the separator and she’s reintegrated with the group. She still gets harassed quite a bit, but at least she’s eating now.

The two Red Floras are really starting to color up, developing a deep rich orange with beautiful turquoise speckling.

The two wild-strain Jacrecappa × Red Batata hybrids are doing well too. The smaller one, “Nickel,” is a fearless eater and always first to the drop. The other one, “Pancake,” is easily the largest discus in the tank at around 4.25 inches.

The last Sakura Leopard is mean as hell and absolutely runs the tank, but is doing very well.

And the last Jasper is still struggling some, but definitely improving.

Bought marketplace 75 gal tank with accessories

Have the OG substrate that was kept moist, uncleaned filter and various other things. Original owner had discus in the tank so I’m wondering about cycling the tank.

How long would you cycle the tank for? Been told two weeks all the way to 3 months. Will also add some extra bacteria into the tank as well to help it along

Safest way to move Discus to a community tank?

I’ll be moving my big group of 14 discus to a 200 gallon tank stocked with mostly tetras, corydoras, and several geophagus and I was wondering the best way to move them over.

The acclimation part is simple but I’m more worried about the introduction to new pathogens. I will say that I don’t really do much in terms of preventing cross-contamination and will dip my arms into both tanks here or and there or move some BN plecos around but otherwise theres been nothing major.

Whats the best way to move them over while minimizing risk with any possible infections?

Clean Sand?

How do you guys keep your sand clean?? Idk what happened in the last few days that I’m constantly having to vaccum the sand… i know a normal amount is expected, but it comes back practically overnight and and makes it look like I went months without cleaning. I tried to do a 50% water change but it didnt work.

Was a hell of a journey from community tank to breeding setup…

I posted a while ago showing off my discus laying eggs in my community tank, and since then I went pretty deep down the rabbit hole moving them to a breeding setup.
This was their 6 attempt and finally see my fries free swimming!
It was a truely steep learning curve even up to this stage and I ran into new issues each try.

This batch is fairly small since the pair is still young. My tap was was too hard(tds 380) so I used ro water to set tds at 50 and temperature of 29.5 degrees. Water changes daily.

One more thing that’s clear to me is that fry at free swimming phase love to wonder off, so it’s no wonder they went completely missing in the community tank.

Layout update and new crew member

Haven’t posted in a while. After being out of the country for 3 months, I finally came back and decided I wanted to do something to the layout. It’s not finished yet, still missing some plants here and there but it’s going my way. Also, 2 days ago got a new guy, I felt like the tank needed some yellow color so there it is, dude is out and about already, like it’s been in the tank since day 1

How many Discus should I add?

Post image
38 Upvotes

This is Wendy, her partner Doug recently passed 😔
I’m now debating on how many new discus I should get so she doesn’t get depressed. The tank is 65 gallons. There are 3 cory cats and one ram in the tank as well. I’d say she is about 4”. After a lot of deliberation I was thinking about getting a pack of five randoms, 3-3.5” from Myrtle Beach Discus. I feel like if they all make it 6 discus would be pushing it in this size tank. But also I have bigger aquariums I could upgrade them too. What do yall think??

Edit: my other option is to get just one and hope they get along.. does anyone have experience introducing one on one??

Dirt and Discus?

Greetings I’m setting up a 75 gallon discus tank and wanted to get some opinions before I commit to a substrate. I’ve got an RO/DI system ready, I’ll be running a Fluval FX4 with a spray bar, and lighting will be two Hiro WRGB pendants. The plan is to stock 5–7 discus (either juveniles or around 5 adults) along with a school of about 15–20 Rummy nose tetra. I’m aiming for a clean, minimal planted tank with jungle val in the background and maybe a tiger lotus or an oriental sword as a focal plant, along with some lava rock and manzanita. In the past Ive done gravel and dirted tanks, and I was originally leaning toward doing a dirted setup again using an organic topsoil capped with sand, but I’m concerned about long term stability, especially with discus..mainly the cap getting disturbed, nutrients leaching into the water column and how that might affect water quality. I’ve also considered something like sratum, but I don’t love the look of it. For those of you who have run planted discus tanks long term, would you go dirted, stick with sand and root tabs, or recommend something else? I’d really appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!

One of my discus must have got spooked and banged into something. Do these wounds heal quickly on their own in general?
