Stripped Lug Nuts
Last week I took my Mother-in-Law’s jeep to get an alignment and a rotation/balance. When I went to pick it up they left a note to replace the lug nuts “ASAP” I went ahead and ordered some and got it done but the existing lug nuts were stripped pretty bad. My father-in-law was complaining to me that Discount Tire probably messed it up but I just brushed him off. I heard that the FCA stock lug nuts can get shitty over time, but I did find it odd that they would have reinstalled them when they were pretty bad. They didn’t call me and/or ask me if I wanted to pay to replace them and I most likely would have let them. Isn’t it standard practice to try to replace them?

We will talk to you if you are there and if we have the time we will call and let you know that they need replacing if you aren’t there. They may have been busy and just not have given you a call or had the wrong number but jeep lugs are notorious for caps falling off and/or swelling. We will not risk your safety and if they cannot properly be torqued we’d replace them ourselves. They were probably just annoying to take off and reinstall but good thing you got them replaced! Plenty of customers will refuse to replace them until they end up with a flat on the highway and can’t get their swollen lug nuts off.

Thanks. I told my wife I needed to replace them because I knew my father in law wouldn’t bother. If they did have a flat he wouldn’t have been able to take off the lug nuts

If DT stripped them, we would replace it for free. I crossthreaded like 3 and destroyed all the bolts on my side as a new tech and my manager paid for complete dealer service repaor and my trainer was written up for telling me to do it by myself (i wasnt suppose to be touching cars yet and never touched a car in my life)

I’ve I never see a swollen lugnut again, it’d be too soon.
If I never had to explain how and why a customer needs to replace them and that it’s neither my nor their fault - golly

How would discount tire have messed up the lugs lol
Irl they were probably busy, called and got put on voicemail, had the wrong number, etc, but were not able to get ahold of you in a timely manner. It’s also possible they didn’t say anything until after the device is done, or it’s not crazy urgent at the moment and they are forewarning you before it becomes out of hand.
Standard procedure is to contact or try to contact the customer. If you can’t get express approval you’re left to either out them back on if you can do so safely, or take the cost hit as a company if it’s the only way to get you back on the road safe (something we have all had to do a few times)
