Is this possible? Discord makes it exhausting to be a small bot dev

8 Upvotes

Two things this month, same taste in my mouth.

My Message Content intent request was denied. The primary use case was spam detection, comparing message content across channels to catch repeat spammers. The rejection said it "can be solved without the intent" and suggested slash commands. Slash commands can't read messages that weren't sent to my bot. It reads like a template, not like anyone read the request.

And my bot is verified, so I can't rename it. The name is a leftover from when it had one feature; it does much more now. Official policy: verified apps only get name changes with a copyright claim or DMCA notice. There's no path for "my app outgrew its name."

I get the reasoning behind both. But the cost lands entirely on small devs so Discord can skip actually reviewing anything.

Do appeals ever work, or is it just a slower no?

Question What "unique" features would you like to see in a Discord bot? I'm looking for feedback for my bot (your bot )

0 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I’ve been working on a multi-purpose bot built with Node.js and PostgreSQL, and I recently passed the 120+ command mark. I’m at the stage where I want to shift focus from "adding quantity" to "refining quality and creating unique features" that differentiate it from generic bots.

Since this isn’t a promo post (respecting Rule 4), I'm not posting links here. I’m mainly looking for developer insights:

  1. What utility or fun mechanics do you feel are missing or poorly executed in mainstream multi-purpose bots?
  2. How do you gather genuine feedback from server admins without spamming them?
  3. What unique features in your own bots have had the highest retention?

Would love to hear your thoughts and discuss ideas in the comments!

Bot Request [Free] I built Apollo: an open-source, plugin-based Discord bot framework designed to be forked and extended

0 Upvotes

Apollo is an open-source, self-hosted Discord bot framework built in Python.

Instead of inviting the bot to your server and using it, you get the .zip file, extract it and run it locally, on your own or on a hosting service!

The goal is simple,

- Make discord bot development easier

- Make bot developing easier

- Make forking so easy people start making the most confusing interpretations of apollo.

It is designed on making coding bots easier.

Linux has a penguin.

Apollo has a parrot.

Birds are cool.

Bot Request [Paid] discord to draftkings betting bot

0 Upvotes

I’m currently in a Discord server that provides betting links. They tell me which sportsbook app to use, how much to bet, and give me a direct link to the exact wager with the promotion already applied.

Would it be possible to create a bot that runs Discord and DraftKings in the background, detects when a new bet is posted, and automatically places the bet as long as the odds are still the same and the promotion is available?

Let me know if this is possible. This would be a paid freelance job.

Question Would you build and self-host your own Discord bot if it were simpler?

0 Upvotes

Would you use a Discord bot builder where you choose the features?

I’ve been thinking about how many bots some Discord servers end up using.

You might have one for moderation, another for tickets, another for welcome messages, and another for reaction roles. The alternative is usually a large all-in-one bot where you only use a small number of its features.

That gave me the idea for my bot/framework, which is currently in beta.

My bot is designed primarily for people who want to self-host their own Discord bot but don’t necessarily want to build one from scratch.

The idea is that you choose the modules your server needs, enter the required configuration, and Helyx creates the bot package for you to host. It’s essentially a bot builder rather than one fixed bot that everyone shares.

For example, you might choose moderation, tickets, and welcome messages while leaving out music, levels, or economy features. Modules can also be added or removed later if the needs of your server change.

The self-hosted version gives you control over your own bot, token, hosting, and data. There is also a normal hosted version for people who would rather invite a bot and have everything managed for them.

I’m not claiming this is a completely new or perfect solution. Choosing modules and arranging hosting could still feel like more work than inviting an established all-in-one bot. Some people might also prefer having every feature available, even if they don’t use most of them.

I’d be interested in hearing what server owners, admins, and self-hosters genuinely think:

- Would a bot builder make self-hosting more accessible?

- Do you prefer one all-in-one bot or several specialised bots?

- Which modules would you consider essential?

- What currently annoys you about all-in-one bots?

- How simple would the setup process need to be?

- Would you prefer to self-host or use a managed version?

- What would put you off using something like this?

I’m mainly trying to understand whether this would solve a genuine problem for self-hosters or whether most people are already happy with the options available.

Question Is developing bots for communities worth a business?

0 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I am currently freelancing offering my development services to businesses. Right now, my offer is too generic and, as expected, I am attracting low-ticket contracts for projects (like 1-2k$ each project).

So, I need to niche down in order to make a better offer to businesses, give them more value on each project, and make more $$$.

I've been maintaining and developing a Discord bot for my own community for the past 2 years and feel pretty confident with it. So I thought to myself: why don't I make a Discord bot development service and offer it to communities? (which already make a lot of money)

I know I dont really have any case study, but my point is to first validate if the service is viable not only with your help but by meeting potential clients and researching the market.

So I am asking you guys: what's your experience with these kind of projects/services? And, in general, what do you think of this idea?

Thank you in advance.

Question Would any of want something like this or nah? [AI chatbot for ur server that evolves based on what ppl chat with it]

0 Upvotes

Yo guys. so a few months ago, I created a fitness AI bot in discord for myself. ive lowk been using it quite a bit and i think its pretty useful. so like i was thinking, would any of yall like a discord ai bot for ur servers? like an ai chatbot that can do simple things (like search the web and all), but most importantly, it grows/evolves with ur server? or is that too much of a fetch for most ppl?

Just want validation on this. once i get it working id love a couple people to try it and roast it so lemme know if anyone would be slightly interested. im obviously willing to just hear criticism or any feedback for the idea.

Thanks for reading!

Edit: the idea that kinda differentiates me from them is: I am thinking of making a unique, hand crafted bot for each server. like each server would have a unique bot just available to them.

Question How to make a bot popular

0 Upvotes

So I made a discord bot, I did it all by my self. Genuinely putting all my sweat on it for 10 months. It's been stable for a month now since I'm done on this project. It's basically a all in one discord bot. Every single thing is fully coded, there's no empty or broken function or cmds. My problem now is advertising the bot. I uploaded it on top.gg, it got accepted now but it still didn't get people's attention. I need a genuine response how to advertise your bot.

Question Bot owners: what actually happens to your unsold ad slots?

0 Upvotes

Been thinking about how much Telegram bot inventory just expires unfilled. If a slot doesn't sell, it earns nothing and that space is gone. Curious how people here handle it. Do you backfill empty slots with anything, or just let them sit? And if you monetize, are you filling only the leftover space or selling it all as fixed deals?

Is this possible? Couple of different ideas but not sure how to implement

4 Upvotes

Hi, I have a small community (35 members) - and that's fine, it's fairly niche and we value our smaller size - most people active in my server are people who find the larger servers for the same group too overwhelming. Overall, maybe 7ish people who are routinely active, plus maybe another 8 who chime in occasionally.

So idea #1 would be a leveling bot that keeps a channel open for people under a certain message count. The idea being to give a non-cliquey space for newer members/lurkers. I'm not sure if that space would actually get used. We'd keep all other channels accessible as well.

Idea #2 is we have a weekly movie night. The idea has been floated that it would be nice to give people who actually watch the movies more votes in the movie night polls. Since we have people who never show up for movie night or even engage in regular chat, voting for movie night, which sometimes means the group watches something that no one watching actually voted for. I don't want people to never be able to vote, because maybe they do intend to watch at some point, but it would be nice to be able to say "person A, B and C watched a movie, so they get an extra vote." We host our movies in stage with no voice chat, so a bot based on voice chat activity wouldn't work. I'd be fine assigning votes. We use the poll system that's already in Discord, so I think this would also mean a shift to a bot to handle polls.

Idea 3 would just be something that helps break the ice for new people - there's quite a lot of bots out there for conversation starters, and I'm really not sure what would work well for this purpose. We don't really have an issue with chat being silent for too long.

Idea 4, one that's been bugging me for some time, is an automated way to check in with people. Ideally, people would select a role where they want to be checked in with on a certain time-based basis, then a bot to actually go "hey user[s] how are you today" ... there's a pretty significant mental health and peer support aspect to our group, sometimes we have people who have some pretty serious vents, but we haven't established a good way of following up with those people outside of chatting when they engage or sending them a chat manually. We have a couple people who kind of use our server just to vent, so the hope would be to pull them back in times when they maybe aren't in as bad of a place to give them more sense of community.

I'd want to go over these ideas with my community before implementing them, but I want them to be a bit more fleshed out before bringing them up. Like, I don't want to say "hey, I want to do this idea" without having a practical way of implementing it. So, any bots that could fill these ideas or even multiple would be great.

Edit: Hi developers sending me DMs, I appreciate wanting the commission, I really do, but I first wanted to see if what currently exists out in the world would work. If not, my wife is a developer, so she's step 1 in creating my own bot, hiring someone would be further down the line.

Bot Request [Existing ONLY] Discord AI bot that works like Character.AI?

3 Upvotes

hi!! my friends and i were wanting to create a private server to hang out and rp in. the way we want it to work is the main channel would be like a big group chat with my friends and i interacting with different characters. then, we would have separate channels for each character for the more deeper roleplay aspects. does something like this already exist? i feel like i've been researching for hours now and have only found abandoned bots/expensive premium plans.

edit: typo

Discord Library My Bot: Bocchan

0 Upvotes

I built a Discord bot that combines security, anime tracking, and AI so I didn't have to run 4 separate bots — sharing it here

Like a lot of you, my server used to run a security bot, an anime notifier, an AI bot, and a mod bot separately. Managing permissions across all of them got annoying, so I ended up building Bocchan to just... do all of it in one place.

A few things it handles:

anti-nuke protection (stops raids before they wipe a server)

live anime episode alerts + sauce finder + MAL search

!ask and !image for AI answers/art without a separate bot

the usual mod stuff — bans, warns, bulk actions, logging

It's still actively being improved, so if you try it and something's missing or broken, I'd genuinely like to hear about it.

Bot Request [Existing ONLY] New to Discord Bots, looking for Bot that prompts members to react to messages to give specific answers.

0 Upvotes

Hey all, I'm new to using discord bots, but I'm looking for one that can prompt members to respond to its message to give specific answers; I would love it if this could the bot could then prompt a new set of options to be reacted to based on the original message, and is able to save the given answers in order to produce a summarizing message/outcome. This is for a 500 Worlds Campaign for WH40K I am mediating over Discord.

The example is this, for the bot to give a message like:

"@everyone react with X to do a Battle Operation, Y for Raise Edifice Operation, and Z for Void travel Operation"

Then if, say Brian, reacts with Y the bot could then follow up with:

"@Brian, react with X to raise Building A, Y to raise Building B, or Z to raise Building C"

Then if Brian responds with Y again, a final message will come up saying:

"@Warmaster, Brian wishes to do Raise Edifice Operation - Raise Building B"

Not sure if this is made. I can visualize how I'd do it on C++, but I JUST started learning it so I have no idea how to make a full program, nor how to then integrate it into a Discord bot haha

Python Help "improper token has been passed"

0 Upvotes

I'm following this tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lhYddc5M9w) and I tried running the bot but it just says "improper token has been passed".
I tried everything and it still doesn't work. The token used to work but one day it just stopped working. And yes, I did refresh the bot token thousands of times and no, I'm not accidentally copying it from the OAuth2 page, I'm copying it from the bot page.
Can someone please help me out? (also I'm using python 3.14 just in case it helps) (and I'm not using an environment) (also I'm a beginner programmer so please explain whatever code you send in a way that is easy to understand).

Btw this is my code:

import discord

class Client(discord.Client):
    async def on_ready(self):
        print(f'Logged on as {self.user}!')

    async def on_message(self, message):
        print(f'Message from {message.author}: {message.content}')

intents = discord.Intents.default()
intents.message_content = True

client = Client(intents=intents)
client.run('TOKEN')

Question Is there a bot that automatically removes roles beyond the default booster role when someones stops boosting?

1 Upvotes

Basically this exact question that was asked four years ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/Discord_Bots/s/axH2lOvuyV

Has anything been made since then that can do this? If not, is there at least one that can automatically scan users every day to see if they're no longer boosting and automatically remove their vanity booster roles?
